It seems Bec works best when he's writing series made up only of few issues. Give him something long and he gets lost in his ambition to tell a grandeur story. Pandemonium is based on a story of a real life Waverly Hill sanatorium, one of those creepy hospitals full of horror stories such as forbidden procedures, experiments and such. Rumors said there were 60000 dead passing through the tunnel of death underneath the sanatorium, that was used to take dead out of premise. Real number tends to be lesser, around 8000 or so, but scary nonetheless.
Bec uses this horrifying background to tell a story about a Doris and Cora, mother and daughter, that came there in 1951. so daughter can be treated for tuberculosis. Slowly, things start to unravel to the sad and bitter end.
Good, slowburn atmosphere with an art to match. Would be a good Carpenter horror movie.

Το κόμικ το παρήγγειλα στα τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου από τα Public, μαζί με άλλα τρία των ίδιων εκδόσεων, σε ιδιαίτερα χαμηλή τιμή για την ποιότητα και το μέγεθός τους. Σχεδόν έναν μήνα έκανα υπομονή μέχρι τελικά να πέσουν στα χέρια μου! Το "Pandemonium" είναι το πρώτο κόμικ των εκδόσεων Humanoids που διαβάζω στ'αγγλικά και δηλώνω άκρως ικανοποιημένος.

Έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια αρκετά δυνατή και ανατριχιαστική ιστορία τρόμου, με τα πιο τρομακτικά στοιχεία της να μην είναι τόσο αυτά που περιέχουν υπερφυσικό (ή παραφυσικό, όπως θέλετε πείτε το), όσο αυτά που έχουν να κάνουν με τον άνθρωπο και τις θηριωδίες που είναι ικανός να διαπράξει, στον βωμό του κέρδους ή και της ανάγκης του να προκαλέσει πόνο και κακό σε άλλους ανθρώπους. Το όλο κόνσεπτ βασίζεται σε αληθινά γεγονότα, ενώ σίγουρα ο συγγραφέας έβαλε και την φαντασία του να οργιάσει, με σκοπό να παρουσιάσει μια πολύ δυνατή και συναρπαστική ιστορία.

Ο όλος τρόμος εντοπίζεται κυρίως στην υποβλητική και σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα και στα ανατριχιαστικά σκηνικά του Σανατορίου, αν και, φυσικά, δεν λείπουν οι βίαιες σκηνές με αίμα. Το πλέον δυνατό "χαρτί" του κόμικ είναι το απίστευτο σχέδιο, το οποίο είναι τόσο προσεγμένο και ζωντανό, που εύκολα μεταφέρει τον αναγνώστη στον τρομακτικό κόσμο της ιστορίας, τον αγχώνει για τα καλά και τον κάνει να νιώθει ανατριχίλες. Τουλάχιστον έτσι συνέβη με εμένα. Ούτε ξέρω για πόση ώρα χάζεψα κάμποσα από τα πανέμορφα καρέ.

Θα μπορούσα να βάλω μέχρι και πέντε αστεράκια στο κόμικ, αλλά μάλλον κάποια πράγματα στην πλοκή δεν με έπεισαν απόλυτα. Όπως και να'χει, όμως, τόσο από άποψη σεναρίου, όσο κυριότερα από άποψη σχεδίου και χρωμάτων, το κόμικ αυτό είναι πάρα πολύ καλό και προτείνεται σε όλους τους φαν του τρόμου. Σίγουρα αποτελεί κόσμημα για την βιβλιοθήκη μου!

una storia più triste che horror, bei disegni, ma a parte le protagoniste personaggi appena abbozzati, forse troppe tematiche in gioco ( horror, splatter, fantasmi, giallo) e nessuna sviluppata appieno. Sufficienza perchè l'ho letto comunque con piacere

Déçu, l'histoire ce déroule dans le sanatorium de Waverly Hill, un hopital réel ou l'on traitais les patients de la tuberculose, en plus, l'endroit est un des plus hantés au monde ! Je pense que nous avons un bon sujet ici !

Mais élas, rien d'extraordinaire ce déroule, ont a le droit au classique "Hôpital d'horreur" ou des expériences atroces et pas très légale ce déroule, en plus, on ajoute une petite touche de satanisme et esprits. Bref, L'histoire est banale et super cliché et rien d'extraordinaire ce déroule jusqu'à la fin, qui elle laisse a désirer.

I found this book completely by accident...Or was it. I wrote an article about Waverly Hills last years so I know a bit about the place and its eerie yet interesting history. Even though the drawing is kinda old school. The story captivates from the first pages and depicts with clarity the reality of the sanatoriums in the year of the White Plague. Entertaining, a bit confusing sometimes, but in the end, you cannot wait to read the next tome.

Ottima storia di fantasmi dal finale amarissimo, raccontata benissimo sia nei testi, che nei disegni. C'è sempre un filo il limite di Raffaele, di essere realisticissimo, spettacolare, ma poco plastico nelle espressioni dei personaggi e nelle posizioni dei corpi. Per il resto davvero ottimo.

Obično volim da kažem, kada se neko zakašlje kao da ne postoji sutra, da ima tuberkulozni kašalj, ili da ima vinjak glas. Nakon čitanja Pandemonijuma ću prestati sa tuberkulozom, a za vinjak ćemo još da vidimo.

Ako se na sekund zadržimo u ovoj našoj bedoj realnosti, a zatim se vratimo na početak 20. veka, država Kentaki podiže specijalnu bolnicu za lečenje tuberkuloze - Vejverli Hils Sanatorijum. Guglajte ga ako mi ne verujete, mada zašto mi neko ne bi verovao. Imao nas raznih. Zvanična cifra preminulih tokom pedesetak godina postojanja bolnice je oko 8 hiljada, dok se predviđa da je realna cifra oko 60 hiljada.

Strašna bolest, strašne cifre, pa bi jedino bilo fer da postoje i strašne priče vezane za ovaj period.

Sada se vraćamo ponovo u Pandemonijum, gde je Kristof Bek, scenarista, rekreirao većinu loših glasina koje su pratile bolnicu - nasilje nad pacijentima (i decom), eksperimente, duhove, nerazjašnjena ubistva, ali i Tunel Smrti, podzemni tunel za koji se smatra da je osoblje bolnice koristilo za odnošenje preminulih van očiju živih pacijenata i javnosti. Sve ove priče jesu objektivno strašne, međutim smatram da je homo sapiens 21. veka toliko naviknut i desenzitizovan na ovakve i slične priče da će mu scene iz stripa biti više odvratne nego strašne. Zamislite sva opšta mesta iz bilo kog old skul američkog horor filma i znaćete o čemu pričam.

A crtač Stefano Rafaele se zaista potrudio da scene budu odvratne, ali i realne. Spoljašnjost i unutrašnjost bolnice rekreirao je do savršenstva, dok je za pojedine table adaptirao prave fotografije iz tog perioda, poput dečjih igrališta ili hirurških zahvata koji su današnjem medicinskom radniku (ali i laiku) nezamislivi.

Pandemonijum je opelo koje nastradali nikada nisu dobili, ali i delić večito tužne ljudske istorije koji će zauvek ostati nerazjašnjen. Kao takav, strip radi izvrstan posao i podstiče istraživanje, dok ćete originalan horor morati takođe da tražite negde drugde.
