Il ritorno del figlio

Rate this book

Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda was an Italian writer who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926 "for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island [i.e. Sardinia] and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general". She was the first Italian woman to receive the prize, and only the second woman in general after Selma Lagerlöf was awarded hers in 1909.

Two short stories, one about a child found in the road, and taken in by a family who lost their son in the war, and the effect it has on them, then a longer one about a deaf mute living with his aunt and what arises from his visit to a plot of land his father left him. This second one, recounted in first person, was really quite gripping with the changeable moods of the protagonist and his attempts to come to terms with his life (come si vaga nei sentieri della vita, col carico delle nostre passioni e con un desiderio di liberazione).
