This story follows Emmy, her daughter Jane, and others who are related to them by affection, blood, or marriage. All experience decades of conflict and change. Jane weathers many problems of her own, but gradually creates a satisfying, independent life. Meanwhile, as Emmy ages, she becomes increasingly suspicious of Jane and others, physically frail,and eventually delusional.
