Nine gods ruled the world, until the ultimate betrayal resulted in their destruction. Now, the world is dying and only by restoring the Lost Gods can it be saved.

Sealed off from the world for nine hundred years, Schatten is a country of darkness and mystery. The power of Teufel, Shadow of the Lost Licht, keeps the rest of the world out, and his deadly Sentinels keep the people of Schatten in. Their only hope for salvation lies in a single line of ancient prophecy.

Sasha wakes up with no memory of where he is, how he got there—or who he is. All he remembers is his name, and falling to a terrible beast with burning violet eyes. All he possesses are the clothes he wears, the weapons he carries, and a strange ring. All he can do is venture deeper into the land of snow and ice in which he is lost, hoping that eventually he will find answers.

Review posted at The Armchair Reader.

This is the final book in the Lost Gods series, and it is worth reading the whole series to get to this book, although several books in the series rival it in strength. Chaos has something that the rest do not, however, which is the culmination and reveal of how exactly the gods were lost in the first place, over 900 years previous. We got a little bit more with each book, but this last one, about Schatten, Lost Licht and Teufel, is perfectly placed. So in a way, this review is about the series as a whole as well as this book.

The author once again returns to a format we've gotten to know well from the past books. It is told from multiple points of view from more than one central romance in alternating chapters. There are a lot of threads to pull together, from this book itself and the series, but the cast is big enough and the book long enough that we really get time to dig into the story and the characters. This is a series that really benefits from multiple reads and reading the stories back to back, because of those threads and especially for the books earlier in the series, where we still know very little about the world at large and the history that is slowly revealed over the past five books. But, over time, I've felt like I've gotten into the groove of the stories. In the first book, I was lost a lot of the time and, from the writer's perspective might have proven to be the most difficult to write, but though the stories are so different (by geography, by characters, and by the belief systems of the people) they all follow a common theme and purpose. This book would be nothing without the ones that came before it and because of them, this book really shines. It is the time when the author really gets to pull out all the stops and finally piece the ends together. And I absolutely loved how it all wrapped up. I don't even want to go into what I liked about it for fear of giving something away.

The beauty of this last story is in the characters and the setting. Of the five lands, Schatten was left for last in this series. Separated from the other four by the Sun god Licht and his shadow Teufel, it has become a land locked in time and fate after Licht was lost and Teufel took control. The past books have shown us that the people of the lands consistently pay for the mistakes of the gods, who are fallible to the extreme, like humans with unmeasurable power. Of all the lands, Schatten has paid for the loss of the gods the most. Left in the hands of Teufel, obsessed with fate and the eradication of chaos, the people of Schatten have spent the last 900 years without choice. Like the most creative of dictators, Teufel has subjugated the people, chooses their fates for them, and they love him for it. The thought of chaos is blasphemous.

We meet three characters in this story that stand alone against him. First there is Sasha, who wakens in a snowy cave, cursed and without his memories. He believes he is from another country and he knows that he has entered Schatten (when it should be impossible) to bring choice to the people. He soon meets David, a village boy who has been shunned by his parents blasphemy and and subjected to the cruelty of Schatten's enforcers, the violet eyed scorchers. Lastly, there is Friedrich, the High Seer, who spends his days locked in Teufel's holy temple of Unheilvol casting his visions across the land and seeing the fates of those sent before their 20th year to learn what Teufel has decreed for their life. He's cursed with a voice in his head named Drache, whom he has fallen in love with, and waiting for the day when he'll go mad from the visions.

Like I said before, this book is wonderful because it is the culmination of the series, but also because when you see the series as a whole, it is really interesting to see how the author plays with the idea of the hero and how that intersects with the gods. I know that these were written previously and are only now being re-edited and published, but they really show how strong this authors writing is and how much talent she has. I'll continue to be a rabid fan of her work -- I can never seem to get enough -- and will look forward to reading this series over and over again. This is one of those that I finish and then think…and I get to read them all again! Funny how you don't realize those things until you find one you love. I'm also looking forward to being able to read the series in a new light, and to be able to catch all the little things I know I missed the first time around.

Spectacular! Beautiful! An amazing end to a fascinating series.

I'd been thinking before starting this one that there were a few loose ends that I wished had been tied up. And reading the blurb and seeing that this book was about YET ANOTHER new character rather disheartened me. I'd hoped that the final book would be about someone I'd gotten to know and care about through the rest of the series.

That being said, however, I was still so excited to get to find out how everything would work out.

It was difficult at first for me to care about Sasha. I couldn't help thinking that I would care more about him having lost his memory if I'd known who he was before. Seeing him with David, though, and watching him slowly succumb to David's sweetness and kindness and innocence totally made me love him.

David is definitely among my favorite characters in the series. He's described as having "bone-deep sweetness" and I don't think it can be put more beautifully than that.

This book was good enough that it makes me tempted to go back and raise my ratings for all of the others! LOVE this series, and I look forward to reading it again.

Shadows are proof of light. Without light, shadows are nothing more than darkness. --Licht

Deprived of sleep for 8 days because of these brilliantly woven tales of the lost gods, so I took an extra long nap first after finished this series several hours ago before finally dragged myself from the realm of Lost Gods to write my review.

This time the location is in AU of Germany. It's not hard to tell from the names.
Licht = Light
Teufel = Devil
Schatten = Shadow
Stefan = Steven
But of course, Sasha (ohhh, it's a really lovely name, I love how the word sounds when I spell it in Russian, not English) is the pet form or diminutive of Alexander/Alexandra (I always love this name too, I don't know why) in Russian, a name for boys. But in German, it'd be Sascha. Sasha is a unisex name now, but because I happened to knew some Russian characters in the books that I read, I couldn't picture this name for a girl, it just stubbornly stuck on my skull as a boy name because only boys use this name in those books, haha. So it's not because the meaning of the name is defender of men, yep just like Alexander the Great.
Actually, according to baby names website, "People with this name have a deep inner desire for love and companionship, and want to work with others to achieve peace and harmony". Those two meanings fit our MC perfectly.

Aside from the names of MCs in this book, it's actually the names of the places in German that gave it away. I bet, the situation of this book in one way or another was inspired by or somehow reminds Derr of Hitler and Nazi, so there, Germany and its AU, Schatten.

Enough with the location. Let's talk about Sasha again.
First I must warn you to not open spoilers unless you think they won't affect your fun later, because some people love spoilers and some people seek minor spoilers, not major spoilers, just like me, so yeah you get it. So, as usual, blame my cursed hand that sometimes loves to scrolling the reviews of other readers to seek minor spoilers and also blame the reader who doesn't know spoiler tags exist in this world and just disclosed the real identity of Sasha on the first line of his/her review, another unthoughtful gesture for lurkers out there who want major spoilers keep hidden in spoiler's brackets.
Well, this time though, thankfully the (kinda big?) spoiler didn't bother me, it actually helped me to understand this Sasha better. I don't know, it's the case of Tom Riddle and Voldemort.
Those who are loved are never forgotten, as those who love never forget. -- Firebird

Well, if you are really curious, just open it. About Sasha, he's actually . For the rest of this book, I'd call him Mr.X or Sasha. Well, just like I said before, for me it's better to know that Mr.X is Sasha before I read the book. It's not really hard to guess to, with the hints here and there. However, what surprised me more is . The day and night side of Mr.X and Sasha's character is so refreshing to me. I'm happy for him though because of that past he could met Stefan, the most adorable and sweetest uke of all ukes in this series, haha. Seriously, I must be a seme in another life or dimension if not in this life because I always had this thought "Awww, he's so damn cuteee" whenever he uttered Sasha's name with a lovely face and innocent pale lavender eyes. The scene when he woke up while propped his elbows on bed and tousled hairs and looked at Sasha with those innocent eyes and lovingly and that sated looks plus a-not-virgin-anymore looks? MOEEEEEE and SEXYYYYY (and I recalled Zaria Ranmaru's gorgeous artwork instantly, especially the uke in Void , combined with the cuteness of the uke in Abiru Junjou by Ougi Yuzuha which also had that particular scene in it XDDD). I just "Oh shit, spare meee, Stefannn!!! XDDD" Because I don't wanna die from nose bleeding, lol.
It's no wonder Sasha is head-in-the-clouds in love with Stefan from their first encounter. Just like Sasha said to Stefan, "Bitterness should always be paired with something sweet" . For the bitter Sasha, sweet Stefan is the best partner for him. Sweet sweet Stefan with amethyst eyes, an innocent soul who easily blush, and loves his Sasha dearly, easily triggered my seme-side, haha.
Surprisingly their age gap doesn't bother me at all, I was so surprised when I learned Sasha's age at first, but Stefan is 18 yo, already an adult actually, and it's mutual love, so I don't think there's a problem here.
Light is more than that which shines from above. --Licht

It's not difficult to speculate about Stefan's role in this book, either as Licht or Teufel he might be. Well, my hunch about him is not 100% correct, yet not totally wrong, but it kinda surprised me that he is actually... and the way Derr has twisted it beautifully, honestly I didn't see it coming, haha.
However I was right about Killian, the cursed toxic obnoxious rude boy in this book. Well, it's not hard to guess actually, the way he defended Teufel from the start. But Drache and Fritz, that's quite original, I'm kinda sorry I found their relationship is kinda amusing, well, I can't spoil it here. It's one of the plot twists I guess? lol. And Drache's real identity too, I got it before Fritz finally reunited with him.
If you seek the warmth of the fire, you must be willing to accept those flames can burn you. -- Firebird

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT, OPEN AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Lastly, I'm grateful we got complete epilogue for each nation and even for several side characters.
Oh yes, I almost forget to mention that the blurb of this book doesn't match the content. I supposed it must be because it's actually blurb for the older version, not the revised version. In revised version that I read, Sasha never lost his memory at all. And in the older version, Stefan is David, they are actually same person though, just different name in different version. Well, I like Stefan more, I think Derr chose this name so it'd suit the location of this book which is Germany.

First book = in AU of (Ancient) Japan
Second book = in AU of (Ancient) Russia
Third book = in AU of (Ancient) Spain
Fourth book = in AU of Middle-earth of The Lord of the Rings(?) --> Not really sure, CMIIW.

Now, what should I read next? Another Derr's or....

This entire book was going well and I was really looking forward to seeing how this series would end. BUT you can't expect me to just accept that the two people I have grown to like a whole lot are now sharing a body with two beings that I have only ever labelled as the "bad guys". Sorry but no, no and no! That was a shitty ending. It changed the characters that were developed throughout the book on a fundamental level and I'm just supposed to be grateful that they are even alive and even better together?! Well, I'm not. To me it felt like two characters died.

I just plain love this series! I'm so glad I read it. The whole thing delighted me and this book was no exception. I'd been wondering how they were going to wrap everything up, have all the lost gods returned to the world as we were finally going to get to the gods that caused the majority of the trouble in the first place. One heck of a misunderstanding certainly started the trouble.

I really loved the mythology of this world. These gods were very human in their squabbles and their mistakes, compounded really by their power. Each book in this series has had the god in question discovering things about themselves and becoming a better person/god because of the pain and suffering they and their people have gone through over the last 900 years.

But in Schatten order has ruled and nothing has changed in all that time. People's fates are absolute and you live your life in a prescribed manner. The Sentinels keep everyone in line and have them seldom leaving their home village. No one questions anything and believe wholly in the idea that the order their god Teufel, the Shadow of Lost Licht has given them is wondrous. The High Seer of Shcatten, Friedrich's biggest fear is that he's going mad and going to be lost to his visions. He's the strongest seer in a generation and doesn't need to framework the others need to see. He hides his one joy from others as he's convinced the voice in his head is really just a sign of his own madness. That he loves Drache is his own cross to bear.

David has lived the short length of his life in his home village barely tolerated by those around him. The man he's apprenticed too being the one man whose stood up for David's right to be there. After his parents tried to leave Schatten and change their fates David was almost shunned as trouble. But it's only the entrance of Sasha that really changes everything.

Sasha is the Child of Chaos and everyone he touches is changed by his presence. Their fates are no longer determined by the lone outcome predicted for them. His presence requires possibilities. He knows his path in life is determined, he is there to overthrow and destroy Teufel. The land of Schatten needs to have chaos return to it's boarders to balance out all of the order. But his own memories are gone, fractured by a spell, and it's only in pieces that he can put things together. Still he's determined to do what he came to Schatten to do. His deepening feelings for the young David not withstanding.

The journey these men all go on in their own ways really brought everything to a nice closure. By the end of the story I really felt for Teufel and what he went through. The adventure was sad and painful at times, but also had hope. There was pain and loss, but also joy and the beginning of things. This book closed the links of the past, but opened so many new possibilities for the future.

I really loved this story, all of these characters, and the wonders of this world!

Why are there only 5 stars?!

Perfect. Simply perfect. I cannot say more than that, except that I wish there was no end to it. But alas, all good things come to an end, and I guess it is even more bittersweet when said things are not just "good" but "wonderful". I don't know whether to sob or smile so here is an hybrid smiley: *_T

This series has a lot of potential, but in the end the author depends a lot on romance tropes and reused phrases. The world and magic are not as fleshed out as they could be, and the characters are mostly one-sided.

As finale of the series, it did not feel as grand scale as I was expecting, though to be fair so far each book was fairly contained in its scope, so I maybe should have expected that.

I was a bit confused as to Sasha's identity, and maybe the fact that I did not see the reveal coming is on me, but it did not feel satisfying. It confused me more than anything else, as I could not reconcile my image of Sasha with the image of the character who he is revealed to be (he suffers memory loss in the beginning that's why the identity is hidden.) I think part of this is because I really liked the character, and was previously sad that he did not get any POV chapters despite playing a big role.

The romances in this one were lukewarm to me. One was established and cursed, the other one featured a big age gap (late teens/late fourties, though I will say I did not realize the older character was THAT much older until the very end, I thought he was in his thirties??).

There once again were some plot holes, but what bothered me much more was that I found the central conflict around the gods, particularly Licht and Teufel's/Schatten's history to be very confusing, with who was who and what happened and who is responible and why. It made for a not very engaging or satisfying read.

There was no incest in this one, which I could as a win! Well, there technically is something like self-cest (???) but... while confusing, it was reasonably far removed enough for me.

Overall this series is a nice and shortwhile read, if you don't look too closely at the details of the plot, dynamics, and worldbuilding.

Over all I’ll give it a four.

The story behind it is great and I’ve said that since book one, but fuck me! Does anyone edit these fucking books??? Why are there so many mistakes? It’s a joke!

On another little side note, and I can’t believe it took me till the last book to realise. So, I guess the countries in the book were loosely based on countries in our world. Was not expecting the names of the counties to be words of the countries they’re based on to be about what that countries all about. LOL I shit you not once I realised that I was on google for a good hour checking loads of random shit. Which then leads me to only one question. If she can put that much effort into names and all that jazz, why was there just so MANY mistakes everywhere? It doesn’t make sense to me 🤷🏼‍♂️ anyway I loved that little bit of info but like I said it just made everything else just be like WHY THE FUCK?

A bit more info after the events would have been nice to actually see how they was all getting on, but nah none. I’d actually recommend these books because I did like the story line so much. I will say one last thing that I noticed towards the end of this book. Every lead character in ever book seems to just pass out constantly, I mean what’s all that about? Never mind eh!

Despite my giving 4 stars, this rating is mostly based on my enjoyment reading this story. David and Fritz were great MCs, still Sasha is the one that really sold the story for me as he is a well-rounded fleshed out captivating character!

However, there are some flaws: the rushed unsatisfying ending, the hypocritical overall message*, plot convenience of David** and Sasha's meeting and lack of a proper epilogue.

*

**

All in all, I enjoyed the series!

This was good. It wasn't as compelling as I'd hoped for; suffering always detracts from interest, for me. There were some clever plot choices. I wanted to like David more, but I have problems with characters who accept mistreatment, oh well.

I guess some people didn't like the resolution? This being a romance, and set in a world where gods are real, I'm not sure what else they thought might happen.

I adore Megan Derr, but this is her first book that the ending didn’t make sense. I just don’t feel convinced that the two villains redeemed themselves nearly enough to override/absorb/negate the heroes. In addition, I wasn’t convinced through the writing that the heroes even survived. 💔

The best book in the whole series! And while Ailill and Ivan still remain my favorite romance, it's not Ailill anymore who's my favorite protagonist - it's Sasha! Mysterious and a bit dark, powerful but compassionate, not to mention handsome, he stole my heart. And learning his true identity made me love him even more. This book is a very satisfying conclusion to the series.

It was nice. I have to admit that I would have never guessed that Sasha was Nikolai. I also have to admit that the revelation put me out of sorts. From the first book, the impression I had of Kolya was not a pretty one. It did get better after the second book with all the affairs in Pozhar, but still, not the best one. I thought of Kolya like a bird like man with bright red hair that look like was dyed that colour recently and is obviously chemical induced.
To me, Sasha (I love that name! specially in boys) was a strong, gorgeous man with a Devil-may-care look. Like a warrior, lean but muscled, overall godlike. After finding out that he was Nikolai, I kind of replaced in my head his face with a bird beak. Like the Sasha from the beginning had disappeared and Nicolai just replaced him without anyone noticing.
Stephan was... cute. I am astonished that I did not find his relationship with Sasha even slightly strange. It just felt natural. As for Killian, it was obvious that he was the bad guy (I mean, he kept defending Tuefel until the very end...).
Fritz was a bit more controversial. I had no problem whatsoever with him knowing the guy in his head in the biblical sense. What I did not like was that my first impression of him was that he was an old bloke. Imagining him in any carnal relationship was a bit repulsive (I blame that on my young years - never could stomach old folks together - they always remind me of my parents and that combined with 'carnal relationship' is a place I honestly do not want to go).
For a while, my theory was that Drache was Teufel and that Teufel was not the bad guy. I thought that maybe he was caged inside the Great Wall or something while one of the children of Licht made him the fall guy. I liked the end, it was a surprise (after meeting Tuefel, I did not thought that Stefan would merge with him and that surprised me a bit). As for Sasha, I always thought that he would become Licht (like it happened with the Dragons) but somehow, I was still a surprise when it happened.

The series overall are good, my only complain is that through the 5 books there was a lot of promise (HOT kisses and words and all) but no concrete action. I will definitely re-read this series someday.

This could have easily been my most favorite in the series just because of who Sasha was! And when he was with David, darn there was some serious chemistry there, that we only got to see realized once or twice if you discount all the kissing. And then there was Friedrich and Drache! Another couple with great chemistry right there.

Everything was great, the adventure and action were amazing and then the ending came and the too short epilogue. The epilogue rounded up everything with every god having learnt from their mistakes and keeping a distance from their people (although everyone was paired up with a mortal or semi-mortal already so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) but rebuilding their cities and relationships with them. But that ending *siiiigh* So yeah that was a bit of a let down. And it's still not clear what happened to Licht!

A really good series all and all it just needed polishing with some good editing and proofreading.

A fitting ending to a great book series.
It feels a bit different than the other instalments - this last story takes place in a country that has been closed off for nine centuries, with a main character one can only guess the identity of - all we know is his name, Sasha, and that we met him before in Pozhar - and a young man from Schatten, barely of age. (Speaking of age, there is quite the age gap of 28 years between the characters )

A most fitting end to a wonderful series.

I have enjoyed each book in this series, but this one I think just tips the scales for favorite.

Sashas story was not just interesting but probably the most romantic.

The secondary story was equally as sweet.

The ending was well done although I'm sad that I will have to leave this land, but I'm content that all is finally how it should be.

ETA Sill a worthy series. I do wish I could live in a Megan Derr world lol

Here's my three things again: xD

First, I can't believe I am done reading the whole series. T^T I always feels sad whenever that happens T^T.

Second, the whole series felt like one story with different plots and characters. Though, I still like it even though it's a predictable story.

Third! and this I like the most, every time I finish a story, I am left with questions of what happened after. I really love that ending!

A good ending to an overall good series. I enjoyed the insight that each book gave into the story of the Lost Gods and this concluding book was no different. Overall a good science fiction series with mystery, action, adventure, love and suspense.
