Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Meruem and Komugi's last moment with each other had me crying. I can't believe I would cry over a villain.
Chimera Ants arc has ended and the Election arc has now started. The end of this arc always made me depressed. The next arc would be the last arc that I've known. Hisoka and Illumi are now back and we're about to venture more into Killua's family.
The ending scene between Komugi and Meruem had me crying. It's amazing how differently I felt for Meruem and even Neferpitou by the end of this arc compared to the beginning. Netero's death was sad, but it wasn't emphasized all that much. The Miniature Rose happened and everyone just sort of went with the fact that the chairman was dead. I guess that's the Hunter mindset coming into play, perhaps. I'm really excited about how this volume in particular will translate to the anime, as there's so much the animators can play around with. Another interesting thing is the character Gyro, who received a lot of attention a few volumes back before quietly disappearing (/dying at the hands of the ants?). Welfin and his companions are now looking for him, and I wonder how they will (or IF they will, perhaps) find him.
Kaito being "reborn" was maybe the cutest thing ever, and made this arc just a LITTLE bit less depressing. I wonder how Gon will react to that in the future!
I just finished watching the chimera ant arc last night and I am left feeling distraught and devastated over Kumogi and Meruem. It's been such a long time since an anime episode made me sob so hard like that.
Still and absolute emotional mess right now. Their relationship dynamic was just everything.
This was actually the perfect ending to the Chimera arc, despite the fact that the "final battle" with Meruem was rather anticlimactic... I never thought that I would have so many feelings when the end of this arc came around (as honestly I wasn't really sold on the arc for the entire journey through) but I'm really impressed. And there were definitely tears - and I never thought THAT would happen 8'D
except i am stopping now because i have to move on. gon’s in a coma, killua ran off, and ging finally makes an appearance to run an election? snooze fest approaching
I am really amazed at how Togashi-sensei tried to reconstruct the way villains in a shounen manga should be. They have their own character development and the best so far is the King's.
For a manga directed to 12-16 year old boys where the separation of the good and evil should be blatantly expressed, he did just that but twisted it in such a way that everyone can be good or evil.
I'm like Palm at the last chapters, as I watch/read the King and Komugi's interaction until their last breaths. Damnit, I'm still crying inside for the two. The King's character throws me into a loop. I've never feared a character this much, I've never hated a character this much, then I've never cried for a character this much before.
Of course, the things he did was evil and he even acknowledged it in his epiphanies, albeit ignored, but when you seriously try to think about it, the concepts of good and evil is really mixed up in him. He is a new-born chimaera, FGS. The ant and the human fighting inside him, along with that insane power that allowed him to fight Netero and get away unscathed( until of course, the effects of the miniature rose sink in) and I understood why it has to end that way.
Their last scenes, assdkdfjhsfds.... I was bawling my eyes out. But I was smiling...
So and with that I've finished the chimera ant arc and I get why everyone loves it. I do to. In fact I would go so far and would argue that Hunter x Hunter is one of the best stories ever written because of that arc.
I cannot put into words how much I loved this volume. Just a few pages in this volume alone makes me want to forget everything negative about HxH and give the series as a whole 5/5 stars.
Is that... Ging? Gon's dad has appeared! The moment we've been reading for could finally be upon us.
But first, we must close the chapter on the brutal Chimera Ant arc and move onto the Chairman Election arc, with the latter retaining that classic HxH charm. Let us tie up some loose ends:
Chimera Ant Arc Closing
- Well, the social commentary is just right on the surface now. Do you consider the Chimera Ants evil? I do not. Insects and other forms of wildlife are driven by duty. In the same way, we do not consider a virus evil while accepting that its very nature is to cause illness and take lives. All lifeforms were put onto this planet for a purpose and most of them do well to serve that purpose.
Humans are a different story. We are not working toward the same goals and make choices that go against the greater good. So in a way, it is fitting that Meruem, whose duty to rule the world was driven by his ant brain and not his human brain, was ultimately defeated by one of humanity's cruelest weapons. He was the ultimate lifeform and humans could not allow something like that to survive, even if that meant the world would achieve peace (free will not withstanding).
This was a saga with no true villains and heroes who meant well, but they all fought on the same moral high ground: Our vision of life is better than yours. And the winners will decide.
Yet, after that touching ending with Komugi, my respect for Meruem grew more than any character in this arc.
Chairman Election
This sounds like a lame plot point, but the intro here is vintage HxH. Every hunter must assemble for the election, too, which means we get to see many old friends. Enjoy the politics here and get to know Ging.
- A couple of major issues I had with the arc were addressed in this volume as well:
1. Last volume, I lamented about the backstories of certain unimportant ants coming at inappropriate times. Well, this was because some ants attempt to assimilate into existing culture, since that is where they originated from. We needed that motive. Though there were some nice moments of ants returning home, I can imagine some fun stories with these characters down the line. The Gyro subplot potential is juicy.
2. If these ants were such a dire threat, why were a rag-tag bunch of hunters with various levels of ability sent without support from the best the world had to offer (with exception of Netero and Zeno Zoldyk)? As the Zodiacs mention, this was at the behest of Netero. Since he had the ultimate trump card, I kind of get it, but oof, at what cost?
I'm in love with Hunter x Hunter anime, I started reading Manga recently and this is the first hard copy that I finishes. I've been reading for several authors and artists, the HxH Manga doesn't look as neat, however it is interesting.
It breaks my heart that Togashi stopped writing it, I wish he gets well soon and keep writing as I don't want it to end, Togashi has creative-out of this world ideas.
This volume ends the ants arc and Ging appears, I know what will happen later as I watched the anime already but for sure I'm going to buy and read the remaining volumes.
This was an amazing conclusion. I'm curious to see how the story will progress with Gon seemingly out of the picture. And the Hunter Zodiacs are a very cool addition to the cast. I didn't realize this series would have it's very own "powerful protagonist" team, like the Gotei 13 or the Hashira. A neat development for sure.
the chimera ant arc is Extremely long and at some points the pace can feel a bit long winded, but the emotional build up and payoff is SO good… i knew what was going to happen because i watched the anime first but still i was a mess by the time i finished. and the way togashi manages to weave such an intricate plot with so many threads and they ALL fall into place… masterful writing!!
Chimera Ant arc [End] 4.5⭐ How can I evaluate this ending 🤔 ? I'm not sure. I wasn't totally satisfied. I guess I was hoping for something original, but it wasn't delivered. Nonetheless, it was sad, sort of peaceful and truly emotional 🥺.
I WAS FUCKING BAWLINGGGGG HUAAAAA THE END OF THE CHIMERA ANT ARC😭😭😭😭 now were moving to the election arc and HELLOOO PARISTON IS HERE WOHOOO he makes me smile after the crying asksksk so i thanked him bcs of his silliness lmaoo
This might be the greatest volume of manga I've ever read. The end of Meruem's story and Togashi's condemnation of humanity hit me harder than anything I've ever read in a comic/manga. I feel like I could write so much about this book, but also that I shouldn't. I feel pulled in so many different directions with this arc. There's Meruem's inner conflict of humanity vs monstrosity; Meruem's growth into humanity vs Gon's decent into madness; the imperialist takeover of NGL and East Gorteau; what it means that the real leader of Gorteau survived; the culpability of Meruem for his past actions; the fact that Komugi could never tell Meruem was an ant; how brilliantly Togashi gets us to hate the ants and call for their extermination before pulling the rug out and revealing how we've done far worse; Meruem's transition from wanting to coexist with humans -> Netero's blind violence leading him to give up on humanity -> Meruem's rebirth as an all-powerful being above humanity; Meruems potential for growth that was stomped out by a Superman at the end of his life who just wanted a good challenge. There's more stuff I'm not mentioning in this ridiculous list of topics I feel compelled to talk about. But at the same time, I feel as though I shouldn't talk about any of them. Since things are so morally complex and twisted, I don't know which direction to go in. There are no clear answers, no one is entirely (or even mostly) in the right or wrong.
I will say, though, that this was a hell of an emotional ride that nearly brought me to tears on two separate occasions. The way the individual ants' stories are wrapped up runs the gamut from tragic to life affirming. I can try to think through this book and sound like a pretentious douche bag all I want. Trust me, the level of pretentious over analysis going on here is not lost on me. But this story hit me emotionally in a way few other stories have. And I feel like there are things we can learn from it too.

The Chimera Ant arc is finally over!! And I'm both excited and saddened by this fact. Although I absolutely adore this arc, I just can't wait to get into unknown territory (right after the end of the Chairman Election arc).
I was moved twice during this volume, when Killua decided he was going to be the one to save Gon, and when Meruem and Komugi died. Although for sure Meruem and Komugi's death was more moving, for they will no longer appear, and it was just so sweet! Also, the fact that Kaito was reborn certainly aids to wrap up this arc in a wonderful way.
Now, with the start of the 13th Chairman Election arc, I am pleased to say that I am loving this arc. I didn't remember it being so fun. From meeting the Zodiacs, to seeing old characters again, I am enjoying every second of it.

The end of the Chimera Ant arc and the start of the zodiac arc.
No matter how many times I get to the end of the Chimera Ant arc it is still just as devastating as the first time. This is storytelling at its best. To be able to make you care so deeply for a character that was set up as the enemy and despised takes real skill!
It always feels just a bit jarring to go from such an emotional point in the story to the zodiacs which are comical at best. I dislike their characters but I love the rest of this arc, so am excited to start reading it.
My heart, my heart. The King became benevolent! 😵 Also, I like the way Togashi put some attention on the ways humans have shown cruelty as well- it was quite thought-provoking.
Killua and Gon have such a strong friendship. I wonder who this brother is that Illumi wants to kill 🤔🤔🤔
I can't wait to read the next one!
