"A terrorist bomb explodes on the London Underground with devastating effect. Nobody is more surprised than Sanjit, the man duped into carrying it by Jaminda, an older man from his mosque. Sanjit finds himself trapped with Nick, an undercover policeman on the lookout for terrorists (after a mysterious tip-off), and Mike an unhappy accountant with his marriage on his mind. While Sanjit comes to terms with what has happened and they all try to escape their underground prison, they are unwittingly becoming embroiled in a sinister plot. As Sanjit disappears to seek revenge and prevent Jaminda from repeating his deadly deceit, Nick and Mike realise they are in a race against time to stop their young friend from doing something he will regret. Unknown to them, their troubles are only just beginning. Poisoned Mind is a fast moving thriller full of tension and suspense which gives great consideration to the protagonists’ thoughts, feelings and motives. As the story unfolds, the reader will discover that, as in (real) life, things are not as black and white as they first seemed."
If writing good fiction depends on imagination and experience then Daniel Borough is well qualified on both counts. Daniel has worked for a variety of multinational corporates specialising in technology, but very much at the sharp end of the stick, in sales and marketing. As a result he has lived and worked internationally with people of many different cultures, and this is strongly reflected in “Poisoned Mind”. Whilst his educational background is in clinical science, psychology is a major fascination for Daniel. This was initially because of its vital application in sales and marketing and managing teams of employees, but more recently in understanding why we do what we do. Who we are and our reactions to different situations depend greatly on our formative years, past experience and repeating learned behaviour. It is easy to categorise people into good or evil, thoughtful or selfish etc. But in reality most of us are capable of both. These shades of grey can make for much less predictable plots and more compelling characters. Poisoned Mind is Daniel’s debut novel but his website, www.danielborough.com showcases some of his earlier work as he evolved as a writer. It is interesting to see the “evolution of the writer” as he experimented and found his “voice”. Poisoned Mind is the first of several writing projects that Daniel plans to publish and the next one, with a working title of “The Killer” is scheduled to follow in late 2012. Daniel now lives in rural England, with his long suffering wife and two cats.
If you read the “back cover blurb” about this book, you will realize that it deals with a terror act in London, which is a difficult topic to broach by any author, especially in this post-9/11 era. If you are hesitant like I was about reading a novel that centers on minds being ruined by religious zealots, or innocent victims succumbing to death after a hideous explosion, or even page after page of descriptions of the explosion, don’t worry. You won’t find much of that in this novel.
What you will find, however, is a masterfully written tale that centers around the lives of one ordinary citizen, one dedicated cop, the responsible party carrying the explosive, and the man that poisoned his mind. You are taken inside the inner thoughts of each of them as they each deal with life up to and including the moment of the explosion. But what sets this book apart from others are the unbelievable chain of events and repercussions afterwards. How all of these characters’ lives become inseparably intertwined and the shifting plot twists are nothing short of amazing.
If you enjoy a book that could have been ripped from the headlines of today’s world, one that keeps you on the edge of your seat and will leave you wondering what you would do if faced with the same set of circumstances, then download your copy of this book today.
The basic outline for this story is really very good and mostly I enjoyed it. A London tube bomber who survives the explosion and is in the tunnel with an undercover cop and an accountant is the basic idea. The time in the tunnel is pretty graphic in places however mostly that part of the story worked very well for me. However about halfway through some of the behaviour of the characters I felt was less than believable - I'd rather not say more as it would give the story away. As a result of this I found it a somewhat harder read from then on.
Over all I felt it was a little too "structured" at times with some slightly odd turns of phrase It also seemed simplistic and rather naive at times. Maybe being picky but if you were really exhausted and were going to get "caffeined up" would you buy decaf lattes? That said I did enjoy this and would try another one by this author.
Excellent plot - fast moving, paced well. I found myself turning the pages with anticipation of what was to follow next.As the story unfolds you'll find yourself asking the question what would you do if you found yourself in the situation - very thought provoking.
Job well done on the characters - you sense you really know these people which pulls you into the story even more. The traits and descriptions of all the characters is a perfect marriage. Mr. Borough did a wonderful job providing a clear and concise beginning, middle and end to his story.
I find a majority of the thriller/mystery/suspense genre predictable, however this story was anything but predictable.
Please take the time to read Poisoned Mind it is every bit a thriller/mystery with a few surprises. You may never ride the underground again!! Enjoy!
A really good read. Also an easy read, as in the characters were simply written and therefore easy to relate to and the writing style was quite episodic. These two things combined helped me to become easily absorbed and I felt like I was actually watching a really good BBC drama. It really would make sure an excellent drama as the drama unfolds in four, sometimes five different people's perspectives. I have to say that the characters were very forgiving of the young 'would be terrorist', making them far bigger people than myself, but I suppose that is the point: seeing the bigger picture is the more civilised thing to do. The scenes on the tube were terrifying and left me thankful that I don't rely on public transport. Some TV production company should really pick this up.
Wow! Now that I've got my breath back, I can finally write a review of this truly exceptional tale. Daniel Borough has managed to create a central cast of incredibly detailed characters to weave his tale of deception, action and intrigue around. From a less talented author this could have been a by-the-numbers terrorist story, but Daniel Borough adds a surprising level of depth to the story, so much so that you can comprehend the decisions and actions that the leads take.
A book has not sent my pulse racing as much as this one in a very long time, but then I did choose to read it on my daily commute on The Underground!
A really good read. Once I got to know the characters I couldn't put the book down. I almost felt as if I was there in the tunnel with Mike, Nick and Sanjit and it certainly opened my mind to how easily we make judgements which are totally wrong. Loved the descriptions of Paris and how the city was used to help the story line. A great thriller, as it kept me guessing and made my heart beat faster quite a few times wondering how things were going to turn out.
I do not usually buy thrillers as my main interests are biographies and humour. I came across this book in new releases and boy I'm glad I did. I read the authors description and I thought I would give it a go. It is a fast moving story with a lot of twists to it. It is a "can't put it down novel". You have to keep reading to find out the ending which is not what you expect. Well done Daniel.I look forward to your next book.
Review: Poisoned Mind by Daniel Borough This ebook captured my imagination from the start, and kept me up all night! The author's style of writing is clear and concise which made reading very easy. The story of the 3 main characters, their different situations and how they became entwined with each other was fascinating. If you want an ebook that will keep you wanting more, then download this!
I bought Poisoned Mind after reading some reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I must really say I liked it. The author is at his first novel and he seems really promising. The aspect I liked more about this book is the point of view description of the events, expecially in the first half. I am looking forward to read the next book from Mr. Borough!
