Johnny Whitcome has a chance meeting the one day while out looking for odd jobs. That one meeting with Paul, the old lonely cabinetmaker, changes his entire life permanently and the two become best friends. Johnny learns that putting out the effort and dedication will get rewarded.
"The Box" by Brian Bigelow is a beautifully told and heart warming story about the friendship between a teenager and an old carpenter, both of whom benefit from each other's company. Short and simple it builds slowly and pulls on your heart strings, it is the stuff great childhood memories are made of and it reminded me of my own youth and the times where things other than TV and x-box games could interest a child, and where people like the old carpenter took an interest in and time for the younger generation.
I received an e-ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review. This is a charming little story about friendship. I enjoyed every single minute of this story. I loved how Paul took Johnny under his wing and the bond between the two was just magnificent and incredible. Johnny's desire to work, learn, and earn money. It's really a great teaching story for teens to read. I recommend it to all ages to enjoy.
