This story takes you deep into Middle East, to the Moroccan city of Harj.
The French have established a military strong hold there with is held by 60 legionnaires, lead by an American mercenary working for the French.
Things get out of hand when a Jeppa Princess is caught "accidentally" and sold on the slave market.
This ignites an ancient feud, with the French Legionnaires caught in the middle.
This is a military story with a dash of gallantry.
It was a fun tale with color characters and an expected turn of events. I do recommend it.

Yuck! Superior male buys a woman at an auction and they fight and fight and end up in love for no apparent reason after he blows up half the town. So stupid. Struggled to get through the whole thing.

It’s time for more action and adventure from one of the most prolific writers of our time, L Ron Hubbard. In their continuing effort to produce some 200 of Hubbard’s golden age stories, Galaxy Audio is releasing While Bugles Blow. This is another of Hubbard’s far-flung adventures featuring battles in far off places, a dashing young soldier, and a damsel in distress (or is she?).
Here we find a small detachment of the French Foreign Legion, along with a young American Lieutenant, at an outpost deep within Berber territory. There is a largely peaceful existence between the soldiers and the locals, but it is an uneasy peace that hangs by a thread. It would take but a mere push in one direction or the other to topple the truce and begin an all out war. That mere push comes in the form of a beautiful Jeppa woman who is captured and sold into slavery. When the American lieutenant rescues the woman and brings her into the outpost, the balance is upset and the battle is on. In what feels like the last stand of the Alamo, a small handful of Legionairres must hold the fort against a couple thousand frenzied Berbers.
As with all of the stories from Galaxy Audio’s Golden Age Stories collection, While Bugles Blow is complete with stunning cinema-quality music and sound effects, as well as a fantastic cast of voice actors. The cast includes the voice talents of Jim Meskimen, R F Daley, Richard Rocco, Christina Huntington, and Phil Proctor.

Audio book: FANTASTIC! The realistic sounding sound effects and different voices made the story come to life. The audio and everything else was perfect! I didn't have the books on me, but it was still great. Without a doubt, Hubbard is an amazing author. His short stories are captivating and strong. Galaxy Audio has done a great job in fulfilling their name by using professional voice actors and original music that matches the mood of the story. They couldn't have done a better job. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

Overall, this audiobook (could I call it an "enhanced" one?) is well narrated with excellent sound effects to top it off. It's not just one narrator voicing all characters, but seems to be composed of multiple voice actors. I was considering giving the disc away before I started playing the tracks, but the gripping story mixed with the sound effect and actors makes this stand as a nice collection to my personal library. It is worthy of one to be shared with friends such as on a 2 hour road trip.

Not one of Hubbard's best, but a fun pulp adventure from the December, 1936 issue of Five Novels Monthly magazine. The characters aren't as fully developed as they could have been... we never learn why the American Lieutenant is in the French Foreign Legion, for example... but the straight-forward plots zips along, and the descriptions of the setting are well rendered. The original interior illustrations are included, as Galaxy Press always does with their handsome uniform editions, but for some reason they stuck a somewhat random cover from Argosy magazine on the cover of this one.

A wonderful story of the French Foreign Legion. These stories are becoming my favorites. This one I couldn't stop after I started, so it was done in one go.
