Hiroki Endo (遠藤浩輝) is a Japanese mangaka born on 1970 in Akita Prefecture. He graduated from Musashino Art University. He is best known for his science-fiction series Eden: It's an Endless World, which has been translated into English by Dark Horse.
Every manga from Hiroki Endo has a unique athmosphere and a perfect story. This collection of short stories is almost as good as Eden series. Underappreciated and recommended!
The first story in this collection was really good. The second one was so-so. The last one, however, was absolutely fantastic, and made the collection worth reading. I like that the art is simple and clean, and not overly stylized or dramatic. It fit well with the dark tone without saturating you in the darkness.
I love Hiroki Endo's mature and pessimistic view regarding humanity. The atmosphere is carefully crafted, all the stories have genuine depths and each are touching and provoking in their own way. The art style of sensei has always been clean and minimalistic almost, yet still detailed enough to convey the world in which the stories revolves. Each character is unique and complex with distinct personalities and perspective, no one is a toss-over for the sake of filling out the plot. Even though Tanpenshu still has its flaws and still reflects a rather twisted vision of the world and its children, I still regard it as one of, if not the best one-shots collection I have ever read. Definitely deserves your attention, definitely worth a try.
