Dr. George A. Sheehan is best known for his books and writings about the sport of running. His book, Running & Being: The Total Experience, became a New York Times best seller. He was a track star in college, and later became a cardiologist like his father. He served as a doctor in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II on the destroyer USS Daly (DD-519). He married Mary Jane Fleming and they raised twelve children. He continued to write while struggling with prostate cancer. His last book, Going the Distance, was published shortly after his death.
Loved it. Very humbling book and makes you start to ponder all of the other reasons for why I fell in love with running other than “it is good for the body.” It’s a mental transformation and George does a great job at describing the alternate space we enter while on a run and how it impacts our daily life. Highly recommend for runners!
I really enjoyed this book, especially the chapters on learning, losing and growing, and the posthumous prologue from his son. A celebration of running as a solution for the unanswerable question of life.
About so much more than just running… an older book that aged really well, great training tips and even greater life lessons. Main takeaway: the beauty is in the process!!
