A group of five friends are on their way to go camping in the Appalachian mountains, when they stop at a gas station; they are warned by the old man at the register that people tend to go missing up there in that area. He says the reasons range from legends of a wendigo to a cannibal family. It turns out the legends are right.
The next day after arriving, Cassie stays at the cabin to relax while Jasper and Eddie, and Timmy and Amanda each go out hunting in pairs. Not long after, Jasper and Eddie run back to the cabin, frantic - demanding the car keys. They rush to explain two men armed with a bow and an axe got Timmy and Amanda, and are after them next. They can't get a signal to call for help, and on top of that, quickly find the car tires have been shot with arrows.
The men, Oscar and Pat belong to a family of cannibals and were out in the woods, hunting for food. They can't believe their good luck - five whole humans to bring back to not just the family, but the... Thing in their basement that never seems to get full.
The men capture the three remaining friends and chain them in the basement, along with one other man captured recently as well.
Will the friends manage to avoid becoming dinner for the family? And even if they do escape the humans, there's still the issue of the otherworldly beast locked up in the sub-basement to get past.

My first book from the author and I liked it, but I definitely wouldn't have minded a longer book, to get more details and background.
