This ball was one of the events of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Those who attended went to extraordinary trouble with their costumes. This book tells the story behind the ball, and the people who went. I did feel that it needed a good editor, referring to 3 ladies on p114 when there are clearly only 2 should have been dealt with at the editorial stage, which is an obvious example. It wasn’t always clear, I didn’t think, what she was talking about elsewhere. A pity, as this seems to be the only book on the market on this subject.
