The poignant, heart warming and beautifully written new standalone novel from the best-loved and original Queen of Tween, whose books are described by Jacqueline Wilson as “funny, funky, feisty - and fantastic reads!”. Ruby, Tizz and Sam are sisters. At 12, Ruby is the oldest but with all the stuff she has to worry about right now, sometimes she feels more like the mum of the family. And speaking of mums, the sisters do have one, and she loves her three girls to the moon and back, but she suffers from something called bipolar disorder which can sometimes make life very difficult… A poignant, moving and uplifting story about family and friendship by the original Queen of Tween, Jean Ure.
Had her first book published while still in high school, then studied theater at Webber-Douglas in London. Her most well-known work is the Point Crime novel Dance with Death. Others include Plague 99, After the Plague (previously "Come Lucky April"), Big Tom, Family Fan Club and Shrinking Violet, as well as the fantasy The Wizard In the Woods.
Today, Ure is very popular with British female teenage readers with novels such as Shrinking Violet, Family Fan Club and Passion Flower.
Ure has also translated Danish writer Sven Hassel's WWII novels to English.
Where can I start? When I first looked at the cover, it came across as a happy book. I was wrong. It showed a resemblance to Lily alone by Jacqueline Wilson. It's about a girl whose mother has left her alone with her 3 little sisters unexpectedly. Her mother is bipolar meaning she has mixed emotions, one minute she's very happy, the next she's sunk into deep depression. She battles finding enough food for her and her sisters to eat, get them to school and make sure her sisters don't spill the beans so social services won't come knocking to their door. I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down. In new chapter, there's something new revealed. The ending is quite happy. The book has a follow up book to it which I haven't read. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone that likes drama and excitement.
I definitely read this as a child and for some reason barely added any of my Jean Ure books to Goodreads at the time. I feel like I repressed that entire period of my life, but she was like a better Jacqueline Wilson to me and I loved these books with all my heart and soul.
So I decided to reread this one. It’s like The Illustrated Mum but a bit less intense, and with a pretty unsatisfying ending because the kids never really get told it’s not their fault their mum has gone to France in a manic episode and they don’t get praised enough for surviving on their own. And it feels like the family situation is never actually resolved - like it’s all just going to happen again!
But still, I really liked this as a kid and I still do now. The bit with the poem being read by the mum’s dad had me tearing up.
This book is not part of a series but there are many books similar by this author. It is about family situations. It's a family genre. This is sad at some points but happy at others. I like the way it ended however there were a lot of loose ends and I would have like to know what happened after but I would still recommend it. Also it is not very long unlike some of Jean ures other books.
One of the best books I have ever read!! It’s so powerful. It is written so cleverly. I have re read this book a few times and every time it pulls me in as If it was the first time. An Absolutely Fabulous book. It will help children to understand what bipolar is in a way that will not frighten them. If I could rate this book a million stars I would.
I love this book a lot! It is a story about three very different sisters who have to survive on their own when their mum disappears one night. I love the way the story has been woven together, and the whole idea of the book - the promise of lemonade sky.
The book was very unique and interesting, I couldn't put it down until it was done. As someone who prefers humor over sad, thrilling or scary books, this was perfect for me.
