IT ALL BEGAN WITH AN AMBER NECKLACE

From the moment she steps off the bus on the edge of Washington State's Nakalt Indian Reservation, Camille Avery is certain she's made a mistake. Maybe taking a leave of absence from her teaching job to illustrate her friend Barbara's book wasn't such a good idea after all. And to make matters worse, Barbara is nowhere to be found--not at the bus stop waiting for her, and not at her cabin either.

Barbara's disappearance is only the first of the mysteries awaiting Camille on the reservation. Who is the magnificent man who stands outside her door at night surrounded by wolves? Can the necklace she wears be the same one that appears in a Nakalt legend? And, most intriguing of all, why does her heart race at the sight of Kit Makinna? Breathtakingly handsome, Kit is a man whose education and experience cause him to regard the prophecies and beliefs of his forefathers as nonsense ... a man whose very destiny may be inexorably linked with Camille's.

Patricia Simpson grew up in the wilderness of Western Montana, where it meant a 3-1/2 hour drive just to buy shoes. When she was young, the iPod hadn't yet been invented, and there were no radio stations in the area, so on the many long drives for shoes, Patricia amused herself by reading novels or creating her own stories in her head. She was encouraged to write by her sister, who always asked to be read what she had written so far that day, her Egyptian-born English teacher in junior high, and then again by a creative writing professor at the University of Washington. Instead of seeking a writing degree, Patricia chose to pursue a BA in Art and has worked as a graphic artist/web developer at the University of Washington since 1982. Patricia still enjoys painting almost as much as she loves to write.

Ms Simpson has won numerous awards for her fiction, including Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, Career Achievement Award, and has been a finalist in the RITA awards and for Best Indie Paranormal of the Year.

Her Scottish husband encourages her to accompany him on his frequent business trips around the world, and whenever possible Patricia goes with him to scope out spooky historical places to use as the settings of her books.

Camille comes to the Nakalt reservation to illustrate her friend, Barbara's book, but it seems Barbara has gone missing. She stays on, interacting with the people at a local inn, where she is forced to spend time with Kit Mackinna, a local Nakalt who isn't particularly outgoing towards her. But there's chemistry between them for certain. Add in a local legend about a Snow Maiden who will save the tribe, the spirit of a Nakalt ancestor walking around in the flesh and a thief stealing cultural antiquities from the reservation and you've got a pretty decent story.

I liked all of the characters, the romance between these two was pretty intense with a little bit of insta-love, but a lot of hesitation over expressing it. There is plenty of angst there at the end. My only complaint is that I wouldn't have minded a slightly extended last chapter so that we could see our HEA in action, so to speak.

It’s been a long while since I’ve read a romance of this caliber!

The story of Camille and Kit will take you on a wonderful journey to the Pacific Northwest. I truly wish there was more about them. Thank you for lending me this book Erin. I literally read it in one day.

I'm a sucker for Native American Legend stories. A fictitious coastal Washington State tribal tale of resurrection. Camille Avery is taking time to help a friend by illustrating her book. Then there's the handsome self exiled guy and a raucous raven. Pretty good. 3.75 stars
