They arrive alive. They leave dead. But first, they give me their deathbed confessions and this time - it's all about those involved in cults. There will be 5 confessions within this book, and trust me...it's going to be a wild 983 - thought she gave birth to the antichrist.PATIENT 962 - his nickname was the Candyman...any guesses why?PATIENT 922 - grew up in a cult and believes he was the first of a 'pure' race.PATIENT 835 - he was part of a secret test by the government and I've been waiting on his confession for a while!PATIENT 727 - this was a kid who loved Halloween and believed in all the rules. I sure you hope you didn't break any...
Introducing yet another captivating edition brimming with addictive tales. One notable observation is Jack's tendency to reserve Bucket's room for extraordinary instances that cross his path. The room gives off the feeling of being a sacred shrine.
I really like the formatting of the confessions and the intriguing insight into Jack's thoughts. It adds a captivating dimension to this series. Cults is another highly addictive and an exceptional addition.
4.5 stars; out of all the installments of this series, I think I enjoyed this one the most!! The thematic elements for this one hit all the high points for me (cults, brainwashing, Halloween, etc.), plus, something about the writing, or ‘storytelling’ seemed the most genuine in this book. I’m not sure what it was about this one, but I think if I had picked this one up first and was told it was a real collection of confessions, I may have been fooled.
This wasn't my favourite edition of asylum Confessions! But it wasn't terrible! Just a bit bland! In this one, we have Alyssa - She thought she gave birth to the anti-christ. She definitely had some rough upbringings, and what she did kind of made sense! next was Asher Smith - He never wanted to be a dad, but he fell in love with a woman who already had children. Let's just say he never did get used to being a dad. He joined an online forum that would end up making things worse. Then we have Adam - He was brought up in a cult, thinking that he was a part of a new better race of humans. He led a very strange life. Next was Harold - Tricked into going into a bunker without his family, was of the worst mistakes of his life. His story was by far the craziest story. I felt so bad for Harold, he did not deserve what happened to him! And last we have Ryan (Sam) - He believes that he's possessed by a Halloween spirit named Sam, giving him powers of persuasion. His story was pretty out there!
I think this probably the best one in the series though the stories we the most unbelievable (and yes I understand these are fictional but are written to sound real). Definitely a great read.
This series just keeps getting better! Asylum Confessions: Cults is another wild, unsettling ride through the minds of the asylum’s most twisted patients, and I couldn’t put it down. Harold’s story was a standout—chilling, layered, and impossible to forget. Jack Steen has a way of making even the most disturbing confessions feel real, like you’re sitting right there listening. The mix of horror, psychological tension, and dark humor is perfect. If you love creepy, addictive reads, this series is a must. I’ve read two so far and will definitely be reading more!
Each one had either been part of a cult or possessed in some way. Some of these ones I wasn't quite sure I believed, but they still told a good story. Alyssa's was the one that shocked me the most. I felt sorry for her at first, but didn't by the end of it.
Next is the series. Cults. Wow. I’ve read cult stories before but this was on another level. The pov of those trapped scared and unknowing. Really interesting and enjoyable
I'm gonna go back to 5 stars for this installment, because I love to see stories about people who aren't just murderers - they're victims as well. The first and fourth patients gave incredible confessions, and although the Candyman wasn't as innocent as he'd want us to believe, the confession does leave room to pity him in some ways. Really enjoyed this installment, which felt like quite a nice exploration of group mentality, peer pressure, and in some cases - yes, cults.
This time around Jack gets confessions from: * Alyssa * Asher Smith * Adam * Harold * Ryan
As usual I absolutely love this series and so happy I've got the next 4 books to read 😂 and I believe there is another one coming out soon! Which makes me very happy.
I love the style of writing and the stories that these patients tell Jack, they are very intriguing. And I specifically like this one because it's a Halloween Edition 😍🖤🎃
This was my second Jack Steen novel and I enjoyed it just as much.
Some of these confessions end up making me feel bad for the culprit while some others make me glad that the world was rid of a monster.
Mostly, the crimes involving a mother and her child are what impact me the most and the first story of the book was the most bone chilling. I cannot imagine the horror honestly.
Just like the other books, this author takes the personal confessions from his patients on the death wing of his asylum. Sometimes it’s hard to not give empathy to these patients, but like he states in every book “these patients aren’t here because they’re good people.” I can’t wait to tackle his 5th and newly released 6th book!
okay so the only good “confessions” were Harold’s and Sam’s. First off Harold’s story was SOOOO interesting with the bomb shelter/bunker i totally wanna read more stories that take place during that time. Sam’s story was rushed and unfinished but the idea of it was interesting
Every ‘confession’ in this book was super interesting and had me honestly hooked. There was some that just made sense as to why they did what they did. Alyssa- girl who would want a demon child? She personally had a hard upbringing to begin with! Harold~ his story was crazy and to me didn’t make sense as to why he was put into an asylum when he was set up? I couldn’t help but feel bad for him. These two i couldn’t help but feel bad for them and feel for them😣. The other three stories, yea kind of deserved to be in an asylum🤷🏻♀️there was definitely different emotions while reading this book. As always great writing format and great guessing game🤩
“Put on your big girl panties for this one. Hold onto your balls cause you’re in for a wild ride”
This one was a good, easy read but there was a few repeat chapters in the Adam Chapter and Ryan Chapter where you were reading the same sentence or paragraph twice in two different chapters… so that’s why I rated this book 3 stars. It would’ve been a 4 but those chapters were weird and felt like it was a HUGE editing error
I genuinely thought this one would be my first five star Asylum Confessions read, especially as a big fan of cults! However it just fell slightly short of that as I felt some stories were incomplete or cut off. As you can see, I was still obsessed with this story and ate it up!! I just wanted more from some stories, especially Adam's experimental cult and his role as a protector!!
Maybe I'm being greedy.. I'm still obsessed with this series! 10/10 craic is being had!
I am obsessed with the confessions series. This might be the first author I pay to read on patreon. Phenomenal work. I am captivated by every single story, every single time.
Very interesting read! I listen to these books on the way to work in the morning and definitely kept me engaged and interested me with everything that happened with cults.
The first confession comes from a girl by the name of Alyssa. Alyssa grew up with a father who is a pastor and a mother who is a preschool teacher. She was raised in the church and to pray every day to confess her sins to be the perfect Christian. One weekend her dad invites a man by the name of Daniel Marshall to their house and he was going to preach Saturday and Sunday. When Alyssa first got home, she saw the man and her parents thought she was doing all the wrong things trying to seduce him. This wasn’t the case by any means. After this big misunderstanding, her parents then pushed for her who was 18 at the time to be with Daniel, who is 24th at the time. Daniel and Alyssa seems to have this mutual liking for one another. That night when she was laying down to go to bed, he climbed in through her window and forced himself on her. She then became pregnant and her dad begged Daniel to marry her. Because sex outside of marriage is a sin and a disgrace upon God. The two of them got married, and the first month seemed to be fine, but after that things took a turn. He basically belittled her and told her that she was wrong and disrespectful, and not a woman of God. her pregnancy was also super hard and she would have constant nightmares about being burned alive or demons possessing her and hurting her and harming her. She finally gave birth to her little boy and thought that Peter Jacob was perfect. When in reality he was not. He didn’t speak much, but when he did speak, he would speak in gibberish, but Daniel and even a senior woman at the church thought that he was just very in tune with God. Alyssa was not having it. Alyssa caught him one night, speaking in a very deep voice and instantly thought something was wrong with Peter Jacob. When she fully convinced herself that her son was in fact possessed, she gave him two crushed up, sleeping pills and put him in the bath where he drowned. He started thrashing quite a bit, so she held him underwater until she knew he was gone. She genuinely loved Peter Jacob. She loved her little son like Any mother would love their child. She didn’t get that warm and compassion and love from her parents who wind it up disowning her after they found out she was pregnant. They didn’t even get to hear her side of the story.
The second confession comes from a man named Asher. Asher grew up in a city and knew he never wanted kids. He didn’t have that parental instinct in him and he just knew he never wanted it. When he met a girl by the name of Annabeth at a bar he instantly fell in love with her. Fell in love with her looks her personality that night he knew he was in love. He wasn’t until they got married that she admitted she wasn’t living with her parents because she was taking care of them, but rather they were helping her take care of her three kids who were all under the age of six at the time. He should have broke up with her then divorced her got out of that relationship, but he loved Annabeth so much that he decided to become a stepfather. Become a stepfather was terrible. The kids didn’t listen to him. It was everything he didn’t want. But he stayed in the marriage because he loved Elizabeth. He was on these online forums and found a chat for stepfathers. He clicked with those guys really well and the admin invited him to a private chat with him and four other guys. Eventually, the guys got to talking about what if. What if something happened to the kids? What if they never became a stepfather? What if all these other things? Halloween was coming around and they toyed with the idea of what if the kids all died. Basically each of them came up with their own way of how they were going to kill their step kids by poisoning the Halloween candy. Each of them did it in a different method and the way Asher did it was injecting The candy with insulin. None of the kids were diabetic, but he took the insulin from someone else that he knew. He did that over the course of several months too. After the kids died, no one really looked at Asher and Annabeth as the killers but when nobody else in their neighborhood died of candy poisoning, the police looked towards Asher. Chad then told Asher that he should admit to killing And that he was basically holding their private conversations and emails and everything that was in the form over his head. He turned himself to protect Annabeth. He claims that he was not the mastermind and he shouldn’t have gone to jail for this since Chad, who happened to be a therapist, was the mastermind of it all.
The third confession was much shorter by a man who goes by Adam. Adam grew up in a cult that worshiped a woman by the name of Lilith. His father convinced him that he was pure and perfect, and basically greater than the Messiah and Mary combined. By the time he was 16 he was told that his mission in life was to do everything he needed to do to protect Lilith. He was also told that Lilith was his mother when this was in fact, not true. He was told that he was the first of his kind of a supernatural and powerful Generation of human beings. He killed to protect Lilith and when he made a mistake that cost someone that didn’t deserve to die their life. His father basically said that he needed to turn himself in and that’s why he was caught. He winded up getting punched in the back of the head which caused him to be paralyzed from the neck down. He asked Jack if he believes him and if he could loosen the tension on his neck brace just a little bit. When Jack does this Adam manages to twist his neck far enough and hard enough that he dies instantly.
The fourth confession comes from a guy by the name of Harold. Harold lived during the Great Depression and the Cold War and basically knew what it meant to starve and to hurt physically and financially and mentally. He had a wife and kids. He got a job with this man named Jacobs and Jacob‘s built this big bunker because it was possible the US was gonna go to war with Russia at the time. When the warning sirens started to go off, his wife was in town and his kids were at school. He was in his car, getting ready to go get them when Jacob stood in front of his car and basically told him that he couldn’t leave and they needed to go to the bunker. Deciding to trust Jacob’s he goes to the bunker because Jacob says he has already sent someone to get his wife and kids. Well, when the door shut they won’t reopen which means his wife and kids are on the other side of the bunker. Inside that bunker are 30 some odd people along with kids. They were squished in there like sardines, but had enough food and water to last them years. Jacob basically tells them that after three months the doors will open, but until then they were locked in. Those three months went by grueling and all Harold could think about was his wife and kids. After those 90 days, the doors didn’t open and soon people started to die. The smell of death and decay was rampant. The toilets didn’t work properly and people were starting to get really sick. There was a small burial site at the back of the bunker where Harold was in charge of burying the dead bodies. When it came down to just preacher, Jacobs and Harold Harold knew something was up. They were on day 400 some and the door still didn’t open. When Peacher offers Harold, some oatmeal he chooses not to eat it and leaves it out. Jacobs winds up eating the oatmeal and it kills him the next day. Preacher winds up, saying that this is a government experiment and only one person can survive. After preacher winds up eating Jacob‘s body after three days because they’re running short on food, he winds up dying. Harold having no choice starts to eat preacher. It’s a couple days after that where the bunker doors open, and Harold says that this is all part of an experiment. He tells us that the media and his family, and nobody would really listen to the true story. He was labeled a monster and cannibal and thrown into the psych ward. He was ready to really just be free and let go and he was ready for Jack to keep his side of his promise.
The last confession I don’t really understand myself. Something about Ryan killing three people but claiming they killed themself. He didn’t finish his confession, he was fell asleep after being give a lot of morphine’s side he was stabbed on a different floor before being brought to Jacks floor and never work up.

This one didn’t hold my attention like the others in the series have. The book continues the format of deathbed confessions from patients at the asylum, this time focusing on those involved in brutal killings and disturbing cult activity. It lacked the shock I’ve come to expect from the series.
