Napoleon: The Sun of Austerlitz

Rate this book
Napoleon is thirty years old in November 1799, and about to lead France into a new century as First Consul. At Notre Dame in five years he will be crowned Emperor of France, and Josephine his Empress. In this brilliant combination of history and imagination, Max Gallo takes us from the first day after Napoleon's successful coup through to the thrilling height of his empire. From the introduction of the new constitution and France's fragile peace with its neighbors, to Napoleon's determination to bring Britain to its knees, we follow five years of the Little Corporal's life, ending with his victory on the battlefield at Austerlitz.

My comments in video https://youtu.be/NVVim_d6Izc

He did more honor to Malraux than to Stendhal.
The French writer expert on Napoleon presents us with an ambitious work in which he presents the life of Napoleon. Written in the third person, with the addition of Napoleon's thoughts in italics, and some dialogues (which seem more like monologues because Napoleon hardly ever receives an answer) make the work seem like a documentary. In the video you can see other criticisms that I make as well as highlight some interesting reflections. I say that it does more honor to Malraux's dedication because it is equally focused on the hero without showing other interesting aspects of the time as Stendhal did, however, I would recommend reading it for the thoroughness and detail that it allows us to know.
I compare the work with that of Cesar by Colleen McCullough and I miss that figures other than Napoleon stand out. I would even like to see what Posteguillo would do.
I await his comments.

Pretty good . . . I enjoy the inside view of Napoleon's mind, but it's kind of bizarre to read a psuedo-biography this way. I read another Napoleon biography (Napoleon) and I'm really struggling a bit with the two portrayals. This could happen in any pair of biographies, true, but I think it's a little harder to tease out interpretations of source material when you're not sure what is based on actual Napoleon quotes and what is based on Max Gallo's creativity.

Maybe it lost something in translation, but I've had more fun cleaning up puppy poo on a dog walk. Got 1/2 way through and was so bored of the name dropping and a man whose personality was as deep as a shallow puddle ... couldn't make myself read any more (maybe I will try again in the future)

When you're hundreds of years away from the source material, you need to come up with different things to make the topic intriguing to a new audience. With this book, Max Gallo has taken the perspective of Napoleon himself, and it forms a stream of consciousness as he moves through famous battles and becomes Emperor.

It's not groundbreaking, but it's interesting enough.

Vraiment abouti.

I didn't realise this book was one of 3 and is 2 in the trilogy, a mixture of fact and fiction, I'm going to try and track down vol 3.
