In the second volume of these weird old Star Trek comics it appears that a new writer was brought in--and he (she?--in the early 70s, probably he) actually saw an episode or two of Star Trek. The characters tend to sound like themselves, details like the Prime Directive are mentioned, etc. and the stories feel a bit more Trek than the first volume's--by a wide margin, actually. The artist(s) was/were much slower to catch up, though, with the interior of the Enterprise still looking kind of like a generic submarine and only some characters (McCoy and Spock) who resemble the original actors at all. Scotty, for instance, is blond most of the time. In one issue the shuttlecraft is a completely new, sleek design, then the next issue it's the actual Galileo 7 from the show. It seems as though someone was handing them random stills, adding bits and pieces to their references as each issue rolled off the press. Those issues aside this was still a fun, light read that real Trekkies will love despite its spotty connection to the canon.
Captain's Log, Star Date 3246.8...found this neat collection of graphic illustrations of the original Star Trek series. The characters are well-drawn, My God, Spock really looks like Spock! We must be careful. I dreamt a group of brazen pirates hijacked our beloved ship and we were forced to walk the plank. Yes, real pirates! They are after a treasure and it will take all of my famous resolve to save the United Federation of Planets from oblivion!
"Cap'n, ye canna let them do this!"
Damnit Scotty, I know that. Besides, aren't your ashes in space now? Seriously?
