Review of The Endlands #2
5 stars

Can I borrow the trite statement “something for everyone”? This anthology of 16 stories goes that one better: I believe each story is for everyone. Literate, involving, riveting, and dramatic: the horror just rolls on, and with it, it brings some sci-fi, some mythology, some metaphysical; but every single story is a treasure and deserves a wide readership. These stories are not tossed-off, hurriedly-done entries; they are well-thought-out, articulate, and the kind of reading that will not quickly say goodbye and go home; rather, each lingers in the mind, sneaking into the reader’s thoughts to say, “hey, did you forget about me?”

If you’re familiar with these authors, then you already know how good they can be. If they’re new to you, what a fine introduction to their writings this anthology will be. I find that is one of the best reasons for reading an anthology: I always discover authors new to me, and sometimes am reminded of former favourites I had overlooked.

I've been eagerly awaiting the next volume of The Endlands. Finally!!! I flew through this anthology much like the first. My only disappointment was there were no stories by Vincent Hobbes. Otherwise, the stories were absolutely wonderful. I especially enjoyed the stories by Patrick Green, Craig Wessel and mostly Allison Dickson (whom I've purchased more of her work). This is another addition to the wonderful anthologies by Vincent Hobbes. I'm a fan and suggest this to anyone who liked the outer limits or twilight zone. Five stars.

I am not a huge fan of short stories in general. I much prefer to get very involved with my characters and that is hard to do in the short story format. However, I think an anthology like this is one of the best ways to discover new writers. There are several stories in this collection that deserve 5 stars. And a couple that deserve less - so I've given it 4 stars because it is definitely worth the money and the time. My personal 5-star favorites: Under the Scotch Broom by Allison M. Dickson. In my opinion - a masterpiece. Ms. Dickson also wrote The Shiva Apparatus which left me wanting more. In a good way. Craig Wessel, David Stubblefield and Patrick C. Greene return from the first Endlands with several great stories. Finishing out my list of favorites would be The Diary by Endlands newcomer Deklan Green. I can honestly say I enjoyed all but one of the stories, and I believe there are 22 in the collection. So - I'd say Hobbes End Publishing did a fantastic job with this second installment in The Endlands series. My only real disappointment was that namesake Vincent Hobbes was not feature in this collection. He wrote several of my favorites from the first Endlands.

Having read the first Endlands book and deeming it one of the best books I've ever read I knew I had to read this one and wow! Its just as good as the first! All the stories were very well written and you really get a great look into how each author writes. All the stories are horror, science fiction, mystery or paranormal based. Like the first, many stories reminded me of The Twilight Zone only many in this volume were more elaborate, edgier and darker. I enjoyed all the stories and while some I liked more than others there wasn't a story I disliked but rather just didn't care for it as much as others.

My only disappointment is that Vincent Hobbes doesn't have any stories in this as this anthology was his idea. The authors who do have stories in this more than make up for Hobbes' absence. Also like the first book, when I read one story I just wanted to keep reading them because they were so good and they had me hooked to the pages wanting to experience more bizarre and strange stories. I truly enjoyed and loved reading this book and I place it at the top with the first as one of the best books I've ever read.

Its made me want to look up other works by some of the authors in here and even make me go find my Endlands vol.1 so I can read that over again. If you want to experience dark and strange yet captivating and entrancing stories by authors with their own unique styles then look no further then The Endlands vol.2. I highly recommend this exceptional book.
