Cool Cats #1

The Girl with the Cat Tattoo

Rate this book
For cat lovers everywhere, this sweet, quirky, and delightful romance is about a young woman and her matchmaking cat. A little bit of mystery, a whole lot of whimsy.

When a matchmaking cat takes it upon himself to find his young mistress a new mate, he accidentally stirs up memories better left forgotten.

Melody’s husband was murdered by what seemed a random act of violence. Two years later, the killer hasn’t been caught, and Melody is coping in unhealthy ways. During the day she’s a mild-mannered children’s librarian, but at night she’s a party girl, hanging out in bars, drinking with new friends, and often bringing home strange men. Although acquaintances have tried to keep in touch, Melody has cut herself off from most of the people in her old life. Max, her eccentric cat, doesn’t approve of her new friends, he’s tired of the parade of losers, and he finally takes it upon himself to find Melody a new man.

Q&A WITH MAX: The Matchmaking Cat From The Girl With the Cat Tattoo.

description

Q: So Max, what’s the book about?

A: How I found a mate for my mistress, Melody. Her husband was murdered 2 years ago and she was having a hard time coming to terms with his death. After watching her drag home yet another one-night loser that wasn’t worthy of us, I finally took matters into my own paws and ventured beyond the backyard in search of a decent guy who wasn’t dumb enough to leave his clothes on the floor where I could pee on ‘em.

Q: Would you say it’s a romance then?

A: It’s got a little romance… A little mystery… But mostly it’s about me. How awesome I am: brave, smart, and magnanimous. Way more magnanimous than most cats. Like, I say in my book:

“Cats seemed…well, kind of stupid and selfish. All they thought about was their own personal comfort. A patch of sun. Favorite food. Sure, those were all good, but a cat had to look beyond that sometimes.”

And I do! Cuz I’m a big picture cat.

Q: You mention the mystery… Some readers felt that aspect of the story was a little…. Er… LAME. How do you respond to that criticism?

A:

description

Q: Oh-Kay… Moving on. Why did you pick Joe to be Melody’s mate?

A: He gave me chicken.

Q: This story is told from three different POV’s: Yours, Melody’s and Joe’s. Which means, Melody and Joe don’t have a lot of romantic scenes. How does that effect the story?

A: Well, it’s definitely harder to feel the love, that’s for sure. But the truth is, I’m way cooler and more interesting than either Melody or Joe, so it’s actually a good thing they didn’t have more page time. I mean, c’mon! A little Woolly Headed, Disney Princess chats up Jerky Eating Undercover Cop goes a long way. Am I right?

Q: Speaking of Woolly Headed, Disney Princesses, here’s something Melody did in the book:

“Melody let out a gasp. Joe stepped in front of her, pushing her behind him. He squeezed her arm, silently transmitting his need for her to stay where she was. He entered the house. Her heart slammed in her chest. What if someone was inside? What if that someone had a gun? She dropped Max’s cat carrier and ran into the house, shouting Joe’s name.”

Is she that TSTL in real life?

A: Look, Melody has a good heart. And she’s cute as a damn button. But she’s several dog treats short of a full bag. I mean, the chick dressed me in a thneed. A THNEED, for Christ’s sake! Do I look like a thneed kinda guy?

I don’t know… this guy looks pretty happy…

description

He’s a dog.

Q: Right. I see your point. Ummm…. Shall we talk about your family? Here’s what you say about them in the book:

“Max came from a family of weirdasses. His sister, a psychic, was living somewhere in Wisconsin, and his brother…well, Max lost touch with him a long time ago. He’d once told Max that he could read minds, and Max believed it.”

Weirdassness aside, you hoped your siblings would contact you, have they?

A: Yes! As a matter of fact, the second book in the Cool Cat series is about how my brother Sam came to see me and ended up finding a mate for Melody’s sister, Lola. It’s called Geek with the Cat Tattoo, and it’s free with Kindle Unlimited. So…

description

Q: Thanks so much for speaking with us, Max. Do you have any final words of advice for our audience?

A: If you’re in the mood for a quick bit of whimsy… Or need a little fluff to cleanse your reading palate… And you’re willing to overlook a lame mystery, flat romance, and a TSTL heroine… So you can enjoy some witty dialogue and a super cool, incredibly awesome, uncommonly magnanimous cat… Then give The Girl With the Cat Tattoo a try. As far as fluff reads go, you could do a lot worse. AND… It’s also free with KU! So there’s that!

OH YEAH! ONE MORE THING: I know I look like a dog in the gifs, but I assure you I AM a cat! So please don't mention it in the comments. I’m a bit sensitive about it.

Cute and Quirky.

This was a buddy read for me (not my first choice I must admit but majority rules and all that) and I was surprised to discovered I'd actually downloaded it back in 2012!
Between me being late starting to read and some of the girls posting their reviews early I knew none of them had enjoyed the book, the highest rating was 2* and yes I considered just not bothering but that seemed unfair.
As you can imagine my hopes and expectations were incredibly low when I actually started reading this, in fact as far as I could see the only thing it had going for it was the fact that it was only just over 100 pages long.
Imagine my surprise to find I actually liked it, Max was cute and adorable (which again was a surprise because I'm firmly in the dogs rule camp) and I found it enchanting.
So basically Max loved his owners David and Melody but two years ago David was killed and since then there's been a strange collection of men appearing and disappearing from Melodys life.
Finally Max has had enough and he decides it's time to find Melody a man, a man he approves of.

I can't leave this without mentioning the covers, there's two different ones as far as I can see. The one on Amazon is pretty bland, easily overlooked and totally forgettable whereas the other cover shows Max in a huge pink and black hat, this cover grabs your attention, is easy to spot and not one you'll easily forget. I'm not sure which is the new one but I'm assuming it's the one with Max.

Max rules! Plus he is way better at sorting things, all peoples should just do what their cats say, it is so much easier in the end. (Tho boogenhagen's staff might disagree, especially when the howls for more tastee deelites wakes her up at 2:30 in the morning.)

…binds, absorbs, and seals off molecularly…yes! This is exactly what I need to get rid of the stench of this book from my head! It does advertise for use on “hard surfaces” – what could be the harm??

Oh, wait…that’s the same thinking that got me into the mess of reading this cat-piss-equivalent book. Thanks, Bgurl, for dragging my tail into the Badass Babes Buddy Read. No, really…thanks a whole clumpy pile of used cat litter for organizing this fab read.

And now for the poop scoop on what I didn’t like…

I’ll admit: I’m probably not the intended audience for this type of “litterature.”

I don’t seek out sugarkink or fluffy/sweet romances usually. But this was supposed to be a funny and fun romp. I love those! There was ONE funny part in the whole litter box:

(Melody) "Everybody loves cupcakes, right?” (Joe) “Ah, well, to be honest, I’m more of a beef jerky kind of guy.” <<< Yeah, drop the cupcake and get yourself something meatier to sink your teeth into.

The rest was poorly edited (missing letters, wrong verb tenses, run-ons) and boring. And all fade to black!! Y’all know my pet peeve about that!

See for yourself:

”Joe’s voice shook as he cradled Melody’s face in both of his hands, leaned closer, and kissed her. A lot. And before Max knew it, they were lying on the floor, and then they were tugging at clothes and kissing and laughing.” <<< Yeah, that was supposed to be hot makeup sex.

The real mystery: where’s the mystery?

Okay. So maybe this wasn’t meant to be all that schmexy. Fine. I can deal with that. If I have to. *hiss* But it is supposed to be a mystery. Is there anyone who didn’t see the paw prints leading to the ending of this thing??!! Everything that happened was obvious from the first couple of chapters! There was no mystery!

Perhaps the mystery is: Which pussy am I?

I was ready to purr at the prospect of having a pussy as one of the main characters, but my claws came out when the same “voice” was used for both Max the Cat and Melody the Nincompoop.

See for yourself:

“People used to say Melody led a charmed life. Once she’d even found the end of a rainbow. It was the oddest thing, because there was nothing there. Nothing. Just a field. She’d never told anybody about it, not anybody but Max. She told Max a lot of things she didn’t tell anyone else.” <<< Yeah, I’m thinking what peeps would really say is that she’s stupid.

”He liked to think he was one cool cat and everybody who was anybody knew him, but in truth he had very little street cred since he wasn’t known outside the walls of his own home. Call it anti-social, but Max preferred humans to the company of cats. Cats seemed…well, kind of stupid.” <<< Yeah, it’s not cats that are stupid, just this one.

Another mystery: Does Ellen DeGeneres know she’s being used as kitty litter filler?

As I said, I’m perhaps not the audience for this. I’m happy to admit that I have as much taste for this sort of book as I do for a Robert Gober work of modern art:

What do I know…that delightful pile of litter sold for $90K at auction…in the eye of the beholder. *tail twitch*

However, my rating and review is less about taste and more about quality. This was supposed to be a fun, funny, romantically sweet mystery. Instead, it was Felinine → 3-Mercapto-3-methylbutan-1-ol.

If I could, I would give The Girl With The Cat Tattoo by Theresa Weir....

5000 STARS!

But I can't. (At least not on Goodreads). So, I gave it 5 stars. This book is freakin' adorable. It's quirky, cute, funny, romantic, even has a cool suspense storyline. The funky cat has a POV and does a moon walk. The heroine dresses up like Pippi Longstocking for story time at the library. The hero is the perfect alpha-beta mix of hot undercover cop and volunteer at the homeless shelter. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? All he needs is a Paul Bunyan beard and he is perfect, baby! (I just pretended he had a beard while I was reading the book!)

Anyhoo, huge thanks to Brie from Romance Around The Corner for recommending this book to me. And another huge thanks to Nico Jaye for loaning it to me. It is now FREE on Amazon for Kindle!

After reading two formulaic grovel books, this book was a breath of fresh quirky air, low on the angst, high on the fun, silly, and adorable. It was so right up my alley, I was laughing out loud while I read it.

I loved it.

And I don't even like cats.

If you're looking for something different this weekend to read, I HIGHLY recommend this gem of a book.

Brilliant!

2.5*

Max the cat was quite fun. Granted it took a while to embrace reading a cat's POV but once that was done the cat part was fine. Max's owner is dead and he is left with the grieving widow, Melody, who he also loves. Even after 2 years she is a wreck and has very questionable taste in dates so Max decides to intervene. Of course he is a cat so that does not quite go as planned. The human MCs are perfectly nice but not particularly memorable. Although I like her story telling costumes.

I like my characters to be internally consistent and Joe failed that test for me twice. The writing was not to my taste. I prefer less exposition. It was fine for Max's point of view. I also did not mind that he left out major details. He is a cat. But I expected something more from the human POV.

This book was not awful and I was glad to join in with the bad ass babes in reading it. However as the book got closer and closer to the end I just kept wishing it was over as it was not overly interesting and even Max was not enough. Hence my rounding down to 2.

If cats like Max existed, sites like Match.com would go out of business.

Adorable story with a stronger start than finish. I am not really a cutesy book reader, but one of my groups put this up for a buddy read, so I relented.
"It's a kitler."
"Kitler?"
"A cat with a mustache."

Max is a loyal pet. He wants to find a match for his owner because she deserves some happiness for treating him so well.

Did I mention that the cat himself was the narrator?
Was this a mate for Melody? Had Max found him already?

Nope. Try again, Max. In typical cat fashion, Max has a few detours on the road to love.
The rapidly moving laces were almost impossible for Max to resist, but he managed to control himself.

This story would have been more awesome if Max had spent most of his time seeking out Melody's mate and running into a variety of characters. Alas, the funnies started to dwindle as serious time crept up on us.

Ah well. I guess I'll describe this as cute but forgettable.

Tired of her owner, Melody bringing men into their home for no-strings sex, Max, her cat, decides it's time to intervene and find her a new partner. Someone who can replace her husband who was murdered two years earlier.

Exploring the neighborhood, he comes across Joe working at a homeless shelter and decides he is the man for Melody. But after bringing him home he quickly discovers that a new man for Melody means less attention for him.

Girl with the Cat Tattoo is a quick and cute love story about a woman, a man and a cat. 103 pages so don't expect too much character development but it's pretty good fun, and hey, what's not to like about a heroine who is a librarian.

Buddy read with Michelle, Michelle, Michele, Stacia and Vicki.

First buddy read about a pussy with a tattoo. Or was it a tattoo of a pussy? Drawing a blank now. Oh well. I honored to be among this group of badass babes, angels, enablers, jailers with pixie wands, professional sloths, curb stompers and a woman with 6 vacuums (Don't ask. I don't judge).

This is a story about a pussy that had enough of unwanted Toms, Dicks and Harry's invading its territory. Urinating to mark its territory to ward away undesirables was not working. The pussy needed to find the One. There is unsolved murder, attempted murder, a break-in and a couple humans too thrown to prolong the story.

Honestly, if this was not on KU, I would not have read it. Quite frankly, I have already paid enough money for the pussies I do have.

For those that have unpure thoughts, this book is not for you. There are no descriptive sex scenes to be found in this book. Being the innocent saintly person that I am, even I was disappointed.

When Theresa Weir told me she was writing something she referred to as "her cat romance" -- Theresa's first romance in thirteen years -- I was all, Where do I sign up?

Which is funny, if you know me, because I don't particularly like cats. Take it as a testament to how much I like Theresa Weir's books. Her romance novels are always engaging, off-beat, and, well, weird. But in a good way. This new one is all that, and more.

Consider the blurb: matchmaking cat, traumatized children's librarian, mystery, romance? So wonked, and so much fun.

In terms of categorization, The Girl with the Cat Tattoo is kind of borderline. Yes, it has a romance, a dark moment, a happy ending. But because the book has Cat Point of View (I capitalized that because it thrills me so much to write those words -- CAT POINT OF VIEW!), and Max the cat is not all that interested in romance, it skips over a lot of the romancin' and falling in love parts. Which is not in any way to its detriment -- the book works just as it's written -- but it does make me wonder how to classify it.

I think that's my favorite sort of book. The one I can't quite pigeonhole. So I'll just say that this book is fun, original, entertaining, and whimsical -- while being just serious enough to give the dark parts and the happy ending some punch.

Plus, if you read it, you can say you've read a novel with Cat Point of View.

I'd read a very good review of this book on Dear Author and enjoy Theresa Weir's different writing and despite the fact that I am a dog person rather than a cat one I still ended up enjoying this book, it is just so quirky and different. The book is written majorly from the POV of Max the cat, he is tired of seeing his owner Melody miserable, she goes out and gets jerks home, he knows she still misses her husband David, a cop who was killed two years ago, so he decides to go matchmaking and finds a man, Joe. Melody is kind of a quirky character who has coped by wearing funny outfits that go with her children librarian's job.

I loved seeing Max and his different moods. He loves Joe at first but when he is locked out of his mistress's room not so much. He finds something about Joe that makes him even more uncomfortable. All in all the book is different yet enjoyable.

Thank God it's over.

This was a buddy read for me with an amazing group of gals whom I absolutely adore--wonderful, brilliant, hilarious friends...who have all lost voting privileges.

It's mostly in the cat's POV. Let me repeat, the cat is telling the story...

And that's all I have to say about that.

Loved it! A fun, engaging voice and sweet characters all around, with just enough depth to satisfy an angst-addict such as me. This is what I always hope for when I sit down with a novella but rarely find. In fact, this is what I want in contemporary romance but rarely find. Yeah yeah, there were a few flaws, things that could have been shown but weren't, but it was just fun! The end, it was fun.

ps. I do love cats, and my cats HAVE peed on my husband's clothes and he HAS still been (mostly) supportive of us having them despite that, so it occurs to me I am the target audience for this book. So take my review with a grain of salt. And then read this book.

We all need a bit of whimsy in our lives, and The Girl with the Cat Tattoo is guaranteed to add it. I wasn't sure about getting so much of the book from the cat's POV, but I love Max's voice. He isn't a person in a cat suit, he's so cat-like! Weir gets cats. ;-) Max's perspective on things is often a bit off and almost always funny. Being a novella, the character development isn't a deep as I'd like, but still good. The slight suspense story is interesting, but it's the romance that predominates. What steals the show is Max's sometimes wise and sometimes totally off-based way of viewing things.

Recommended for anyone wanting a light, fun romance with a decidedly different POV. Also recommended for anyone needing a smile today.

Cats really are smarter than humans, and Max is one of the smarter ones. Max the matchmaker, makes his move and has excellent taste. Joe is a dream, he's hot, gentle, giving and loves her cat, what else cold a girl ask for ? Well there is one major problem.
Cute, quick and fun. I wish there had been more to the story it was over too fast

The Girl with the Cat Tattoo by Theresa Weir was free on Kindle, so since I’m freebie grabbing Kindle addict, I snatched up this short story. This is an adorable tale from a few points of view, mainly from a cat named Max who's concerned about his owner, Melody.

The Girl with Cat Tattoo is perfect for any reader who enjoys stories with animals. This has a very creative spin with the star being a cat and not the humans for once. Max’s insight, curiosity and dedication to Melody, the lonely librarian, is very tender and sweet. I connected with Max right away and he really brings flavor to the story as a whole. The romance factor here is very subtle in regards to Melody and Joe, and it has a nice twist to it when you find out who Joe really is and why he’s so vague in regards to his real career. Also the subplot with Ellen, the popular daytime talk show host wanting Max on her show was genius. I couldn’t stop smiling.

This is one short story that is very easy reading and one I recommend anyone try. It’s perfect for teens and adults alike and will surely bring forth some laughs. I’m so glad to have met Max and would love to see more stories featuring him, Melody and Joe.

I hadn't really expected to but I agree with the few reviews I glanced at before starting this here book. The parts with the cat are the best.

Part of the problem is the part where everything, including the parts apparently in the point of view of the two humans, had a kind of 'cat haze' to everything. A distancing. And something else that I cannot, at the moment, pinpoint. Part of it has to do with how immature, reckless, and downright dimwitted both of the humans were - at times the cat seemed smarter, and you know he wasn't a genius due to certain hints dropped here and there. So we have three relatively dim-witted people bumping around the story.

The story? Two years before the start of this story, in human years (I believe Max called it 14 in cat years), David was murdered. And who exactly is this 'David'? Why, David is Max's human - who brought him into a relationship with Melody when David married (well, supposedly, dated, courted, whatever, then married) Melody. Well, as noted, David's dead and Max and Melody have been bouncing around since then. Melody working as a librarian (and constantly seen out and about in her 'costumes' that she wears as a children's librarian), while Max . . . does cat things. Max, though, is tired of seeing Melody drunkenly wander home with some disgusting man clinging to her, so Max decides to make things right.

So he goes out hunting for the perfect mate. Has a list, see, and he's going to search for who fits. Which leads him into the company of a homeless man ('Hey! Melody has a home!'), but let's not tell the whole story.

Alright story all told. Certain unexpectedly distancing between me and it though, the story. And there was a lot more violence, bloodshed and suspense than I had expected or signed up for when I decided to read about a cat trying to find a mate for his human.

This book is almost entirely told from a cat’s POV. If that didn't send you running the other way, you’re probably getting it now, just like I did when I first heard about it. It sounds a bit wacky, and it is, but it’s also funny and unique.

Max’s human is Melody. He’s worried about her because she keeps bringing men to their home, men that just spend the night and leave. Thus Max does what any cat would do and pees on the men’s clothes so they know that they are not welcome. But he also knows that Melody hasn't been happy since her husband died two years ago. So he decides to take matters into his own hands --or paws-- and goes out in search of a mate for her. What follows is a bit of an oddball romance that includes a mystery, kitty shenanigans, Ellen DeGeneres and cupcakes.

The Girls With the Cat Tattoo is such a quirky story, that just thinking about it makes me smile. It’s not to be taken too seriously, but it deals with some dark issues like the death of a spouse, violence, and the best way to walk a cat. It sounds silly, but it never crosses the line into ridiculous. Or I don’t think it does, but I’m a fan of cats, so maybe I was blinded by love. But regardless of how the idea sounds to you, I think you should give it a try. Romance can be repetitive, and stepping out of our comfort zone from time to time can be nothing but interesting.

The main character is Max, and even though we see into his head, he never loses his animal qualities. This is not a human inside of a cat, it’s a cat that thinks and does cat stuff. Obviously the matchmaking part is a very human-like characteristic, but even that was approached from an animal perspective. It’s a very clever way to tell a story.

Melody is a great heroine, she has sex with a bunch of men and it's never a problem. She cares about her cat, dresses like Alice in Wonderland and is a bit lost. Maybe the idea of a cat narrating a book doesn't appeal to you, but I bet you want to know more about this Alice in Wonderland costume.

The love story is cute and romantic, and it’s the main focus, even if it doesn't seem like it. There’s even room for a mini big misunderstanding, a suspense subplot and some action. So it packs a lot of punch, a quirky fun punch. I know that this won’t be for everyone, but if you like cats, it’s a must read. Believe it or not, it’s one of the best stories I've read this year, even if I’m not sure how to label it. It’s a bit expensive for a novella, so download the sample first to make sure that you like the style. To me, it was perfect.

I'm not even a cat person, and I absolutely adored Girl with the Cat Tattoo! Two years ago, Melody's husband was shot and killed. Now, she's been having trouble finding a good man and her cat, Max, is tired of it. He wants his human to be happy, and he'd like another person around to give him attention, so Max sets out to find Melody a boyfriend. He ends up finding Joe, but things may not be as they seem with him.

Girl with the Cat Tattoo is hilarious! The POV alternates between Melody, Joe, and Max. That's right, we get the cat's perspective on events! We follow Max as he ventures out of the backyard and into the big world to find a suitable mate for his human. And we get the inside scoop on all of his plans to hook them up, break them up, and find his own missing family. It's just so much fun!

There is a minor suspense plot introduced toward the end. Max finds something in Joe's bag that he doesn't like, and then he finds Joe somewhere he shouldn't be. Joe has secrets! And it turns out that Melody's late husband wasn't killed by an intruder; something more nefarious was going on. I do have to wonder if Joe knew who Melody was when they first met though. Otherwise there's a quite large coincidence happening. Or Max is just really good at matchmaking.

If you like animals and romance, you absolutely must read Girl with the Cat Tattoo. Like I said, I'm not a cat person, but I fell in love with Max. He is the sweetest, even when he's being evil. He does it all out of love for his human!

I don't normally read a lot of romance/chick lit, but what drew me to this book was the adorable black and white cat on the cover, and because part of the story is told from the cat's point of view.

Melody is children's librarian, who enjoys dressing up in quirky costumes for story hour. She is still trying to cope with the murder of her husband two years ago, and not in the most healthy ways. Her cat, Max, doesn't approve of the losers Melody keeps bringing home, and he takes it upon himself to find her a new man. How does he do it? Well, I don't want to give the details of this story away, so you will have to read it to find out for yourself.

Before I started reading this story, I thought it might be overly "cutesy" knowing part of the story was written as a cat's point of view, but it had just the right amount of sweetness and quirkyness. I have always loved cats, and the two I have now are my babies. I could totally relate to Melody's relationship with Max, and I can tell the author is a cat lover too; when writing from Max's viewpoint, she really captured his personality, without using any of the stereotypes non-cat lovers believe about cats.

The story is told in alternating points of view of Max, Melody, and the new man in her life, but Max is clearly the star of the book. This book is part of the "Cool Cat Trilogy", and I am eagerly awaiting to reading the next one.

In the opening lines, it's stated that Max was "pretty sure he'd been a rock star in a previous life"; well, Max, I believe you ARE a rock star!

Story itself was silly
Could care less about the human characters
Liked Max the cat more than anyone else
His thoughts about catnip were hilarious (at least to me)
I kinda want to read about Max’s brother and sister
Did this as a buddy read with my gals.

I should admit, as a prefatory matter, that I hate cats. I want my pets to love me. I want mindless servility. I do not want to own an animal that has a high opinion of herself.

Last night, I went to my brother's house to pick him up for dinner. For the dogs, my arrival was like unto the second coming of Christ in glory. There was much leaping and rolling on backs. There was delirious barking. A stuffed platypus was energetically shaken by the neck until dead.

Then the cat turned up. The cat stood on the table. I petted its head. It returned the favor by leaping, claws extended, onto my chest and leaving four red scratches on my decolletage. Gee, THANKS, cat.

That said, I was eager to like this book because it got stellar reviews on Dear Author, and the cover was utterly charming. The book itself was perfectly unobjectionable, and parts of it were quite good. The heroine is a widowed children's librarian with a fondness for wearing her story-hour costumes home from work. The hero is a guy who works at a shelter, although it becomes apparent quite quickly that there's something else going on (and what that something is what apparently to be before we even met him, TBH). The romance, to be frank, is basically sketched in, as is the hero. The plot is very, very predictable.

But the book does one thing that I REALLY liked. The heroine, in the wake of her husband's murder, has retreated into, essentially, the life of Zooey Deschanel: she wears twee costumes and bakes cupcakes and knits costumes for her cat. She probably has a cruiser bike and blunt-cut bangs, although this isn't mentioned. In the course of the story, she realizes that she has hidden herself in this safe, slightly infantilized world, because she's afraid of really living. And though she'll always be quirky, she needs to be a grown-up.

I think that a lot of our attraction, in this cultural moment, to rick-rack and aprons and the entire Z. Deschanel oeuvre is result of the fear that many young women feel of being grown-ups in a big, bad world that is currently quite remarkably pitiless. The author's willingness to go there is the most interesting thing about this book and it's the reason why I didn't care that the hero was nonexistent as a character. This isn't really a romance, it's a coming-of-age story. Sometimes we need to grow up twice. Sometimes our cats, claws and all, will help us get there.

I've got to be honest. I haven't read anything of Theresa Weir's that I haven't enjoyed and I am a hard act to please.

THE GIRL WITH THE CAT TATTOO is a quick read. The heroine, Melody, lost her husband David two years before. He was a police officer and, after surviving tremendous heartache, Melody vowed she would never date another cop. Up to the present time her life included some meaningless relationships with the wrong type of guys to ease her loneliness.

What made this story different from the norm was the introduction of her, or should I say David's, cat Max. If you have ever own a cat you know they want to be the center of attention, on their terms. Max is no different. His point of view is interspersed throughout the story. He takes it upon himself to look for that special someone for Melody. And he comes up with Joe, a guy who works at a homeless shelter. But is that all there is to Joe?

Melody, a children's librarian, is a little quirky. At first, Joe isn't sure what to make of her. But their relationship takes off and Max is happy. Until both of them find out Joe's secret.

This story contains a little action, some humor, and love but no explicit sex. Nothing too complicated but still enjoyable. If you are looking for a light read and you have some extra time try THE GIRL WITH THE CAT TATTOO. And another nice plus? Ms. Weir has made it a free offer today and tomorrow on Amazon. You can't go wrong.

I read this book as part of the anthology Must Love Pets: A Romance Box Set.

Loved this book! It's a cute romance with a little bit of mystery and danger to it. The story had substance to it and had me hooked for the entire book. This book features Joe, Melody, and her cat, Max as the central characters. Max is a cat on a mission: find the right man for his mistress. He has character and is very entertaining. Melody is sweet and quirky. She's a children's librarian who goes all out for story hour, absolutely adores her cat, and has had a propensity to let loose a little too much ever since her husband was killed. She takes Joe off-guard. Joe has gotten himself into a predicament by coming to care so much for Melody; he's stuck lying to her about something that might completely scare her off: his job. This book is a sweet romance and also comical, a lot of which emanates from Max's shenanigans. It has a HEA ending with no cliffhanger. I am super excited to read Geek with the Cat Tattoo, book 2 in the Cool Cats series!

The Girl with the Cat Tattoo by Theresa Weir
Cool Cats Series Book One
Max the cat is the main character in this story and the reader sees most of the story through his point of view. Max decides to find his mistress a new mate. Her late husband who Max had belonged to, had died. This decided, Max goes to find the perfect man for her.

I just loved this story. The author does include the point of view from Melody and Joe, but mostly Max. If only a cat could talk the things he would say. Like how he wanted to reunite with his brother and sister. And the other secrets he knows. This is a shorter review but I just don’t want to give anything away. The next book is Geek with the Cat Tattoo and it has Melody’s sister and Max’s brother in the book.

I really enjoyed this book, and for such a short and quick read, it had a lot of story there, including a heart-wrenching backstory.

But I have to admit I enjoyed the scenes written from the cat's point of view more than those written from Melody or Joe's. The two of them just didn't seem more than cardboard characters, and the chemistry between them just wasn't there.

The cat, though, was far more appealing. I think I'd have enjoyed the whole book written in the cat's pov. If you read The Art of Driving in the Rain, written from a dog's pov, you'll see that it can be done quite effectively.

But it's definitely worth a read, especially if you're a cat lover. (I'm not particularly; my dog has claimed my heart.)
