Draco Trilogy #3

Draco Veritas

Rate this book
Draco Veritas is the final installment of The Draco Trilogy by Cassandra Claire. Since it was started before Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and set after it, it is now an alternate universe fic. It was very influential in the early days of the fandom, but became controversial when it was found that parts of it were plagiarized.

It follows Draco Dormiens and Draco Sinister.

Well that was super long but excting journey.
It took me FOREVER to read it, but when I reached the point of more or less 60% I couldn't put it down. I had to know what's gonna happen and how it's gonna end.
My little fangirl heart is now satified.
Time to breath in, breathe out and move on.

description

No, it doesn't Dude! Who am I kidding? I will NEVER be able to move on.

Ok, Eeva, snap out of it! Stop daydreaming and do your review!

Ok, so, as I said, reading it takes forever. It's a serious comitement, so if you're not crazy obessed with HP then think twice.
I am, and I consider reading this fanfic trilogy the best idea I had this year. So far, I mean.

As you may know (or as you may not) I'm not Harry/Hermione shipper. I'm also not Draco/Ginny shipper.

description

I know, right?

I was satisfied how HP books ended. But if I could change one thing... Well.. I'm a huge Drarry shipper and I was hoping against hope that I will get some of it. I did, but not in a very satyfing way. Oh, well... girl can't have everything, can she?
Other parings here are very nicely done (YAY for Sirius and Narcissa!) even if I'm not a fan (smaller yay for Harry and Hermione).

I liked how some characters, that we haven't really get to know in the original books, were developed (like Charlie Weasley, Pansy Parkinson, Narcissa Malfoy or even Tom Riddle).

The most awkward part of this fanfic is Blaise Zabini being a GRIL! Blaise! Come on! It's a guy's name. So. Awkward.

description

Yeah, you get my drift. That's how Blaise Zabini is.
It was too weird to look past that, even though fanfic Blaise is pretty cool.

Besides that it was so cool to see al my beloved characters alive and breathing. From my previous review you know that Sirius is alive, but in this part we get to know that Alastor Moody is as well. I don't know, the fact that Moody is alive makes me feel like everything in this world will be all right.

All you, crazy Draco fans, this part is heaven on Earth for all of us! All of you, I meant to say! It's not like I'm crazy Draco fan! I'm not!
He's so vulnerable and hurt and unsure and scarred (both physicaly and emotionally) and misunderstood, hiding his feeling, afraid to show love and affection but feeling them oh so deeply.
Yeah, I know that book Draco is just an asshole. But this Draco. Yeah. He's book boyfriend number one!

Harry is more or less the same, just full of teenage angst. And I mean FULL of it. I have not seen such an angsty teenager with hero complex since... well, I don't know if I ever seen it in such scale.
He's still the Chosen One, The Boy Who Lived, though. Hey, that's fine by me. Just remember, he's not the focus point of those stories!

description

He becomes great friend to Draco and that's something amazing, something I dreamed about while reading HP books.

Hermione is still super cute know-it-all, determined to help her friends in defeating Dark Lord (or Dark Lords, to be exact). Ron has his own great role to play and that's great. He's no sidekick here.

Plot is much more interesting that in "Draco Sinister" but it drags on and on and on even more.
There are bazillion of subplots, every one pretty important for the main plotline, but sometimes it's getting tiring.
Scenes tend to be too long - my fave kiss scene is like 5 pages long - but they're still interesting and super funny.

Talking about funny!
This fanfic is hilarious! If I wanted to post here every funny comment, scene or line I'd have to copy-paste 70% of the whole book!
As I said before Draco is an OBVIOUS prototype for Jace/Will. And that's fine by me, to be honest, bc I ADORE Jace and Will.
There are a lot of things that you will recognize from TMI or TDI.
You want example?
Sure!
The falcon story (to love is to destroy) or "Black suits you", "Looking Better In Black Than the Widows of Our Enemies Since 1500" Draco said. "It's a Malfoy family motto" or David and Jonathan story ("And it came to pass that that the soiul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David"), or the story about waiting for the other person at the river and passing it together.
Ring any bells?

description

I'd seriously give it 5 stars just because of the FEELS I had while reading it (today I was crying at work and I was praying that no one would come into my office) but it was too long and that's the only reason why I'm giving it 4.

The ending is perfect and I'm not talking about how everyone had their love interests and how love conquered all. I'm talking about how . That kind of ending gave me the sense of completion.
I loved it and I don't think I'm ready to let it go.

Cassie, great job! Thank you.

Wow, this was a very large volume. I will give it 3 stars.

Her signature sense of humor and great characters very much spiced the book but there were still some issues for me. Let it be known however that I hold no grudge as this isn't even an official series and as far as amateur college stories go it was pretty epic.

I imagine that should this series have been offically published the second and third volumes would have been way more condensed and the additional stories would have been made into a novella much like the way they handled Cassandra Clare's official works.

The side stories however for me enriched the story and I really liked her characters.

Very often when I read a series with characters I enjoy reading about I always wish that there were more pages of them interacting and going about their lives. Here, possibly due to the lack of editors we got a TON of daily interactions and for me they were great!

In fact I enjoyed their daily interactions much more than their action scenes. It is worth mentioning that "action" was not very prominent in this book and only used up about 1/4 (?) maybe a bit more of the one thousand six hundred however many pages I read.

The confrontation with the dark lord and the ultimate end of it to me felt a bit anticlimactic. I realize that with Draco being the main lead of the series it made some sense as Voldemort is not his arch enemy but Harry's yet still I wouldn’t have minded a bit more on that plot.

As for ships I appreciated that their evolutions were much more realistic than we see in other series. Looking back at our teen years I am sure we all wish we had acted more "dignified" and not been immature or whatever but let's face it when your 16 years old you don’t behave with the wisdom of someone who is even barely rational.

They were in general terms, all of them very immature, chasing each other, getting angry at each other, being vengeful and sometimes petty with each other but I was fine with all of it because as I said in my opinion it made sense for their age.

The only thing I did not appreciate whatsoever was the ending with my favorite ship of Draco and the person I won’t mention because it was an absolute disaster and I wasn't ready for it.

So so much back and forth about these two, life risking and changing efforts to keep each other and then just when a golden opportunity arises, its shooed away without even being acknowledged. For the love of love, why?

Finally, once again, the pieces of inspiration for her true series are everywhere and they are lovely.

Even though it's not really polished and yes there are many areas in which it could have been better I would still recommend it to people who enjoy Cassandra Clare.

I started reading the books because I needed something more from the author. I approached it critically at first, not used to the raw style of the first book. By the time I finished the second I was hooked. However, it took me three or four tries to finish the third. I concluded at first that it was a perfect dry run for her, cultivating the style/skills necessary for writing her own novels.

There are several inconsistencies compared to the original. Sometimes you cannot tell if some reflection of a character is from the books or the movies. The books set in at the end of sixth year, leaving a gap from the end of the fourth book onwards which takes care of some inconsistencies in terms of the characters' personalities. But the character development from that point on is impeccable. Other inconsistencies include the spells (which are sometimes more accurate Latin than that of the original and at other times not Latin at all but rather incantations in verse form) and Dumbledore's behaviour, wherein he is either notably absent only to make some "deus ex machina"-thing afterwards (it would be a spoiler to specify the "thing").

Nonetheless, I finished the trilogy now for the third time, and I don't regret it. It made several things clear to me about myself. It got me reflecting on myself, which is a great feat in itself. Not even Shakespeare managed that. Sorry if that last part is not helpful for you.

This was my second read-through, and my first since the series was finished, which means the first time I've been able to read it from beginning to end. Oh, and just in case you weren't aware, this is the third in a fanfic trilogy for the Harry Potter books, in an alternative universe started in the wait between books 4 and 5, and one in which Draco is redeemed (I wish Rowling had redeemed him too!).

In a way, this fic was a companion for me through my late teens to my early 20s, due to the nature of the chapter-by-chapter uploading of fanfiction, so it's perhaps not a surprise that it has stuck with me for 8 years.

It's a strange experience to finish reading this again, because while I enjoyed it during the read, at the end I have looked back and realised that I feel let down. Perhaps because I remembered so vividly the best parts - so these no longer struck me with the initial amazement I felt when I first read them, or because on a continuous readthrough you are more able to spot the inconsistencies, or because the little surprises that spring up were not surprises to the second-time reader.

The amount of detail Claire puts into her characters is amazing. I would say this fic is more of a character study than anything else, due to the sheer volume of words dedicated to the interaction between the characters, and the glacial pace of the plot. Don't get me wrong, a LOT happens in this fic, but it is, according to the fanlore wiki (http://fanlore.org/wiki/Draco_Veritas), 537,821 words long, in just 17 chapters. Consider that Nanowrimo considers 50,000 words to be a novella, or that this is more than twice the length the Order of the Phoenix, the longest Harry potter book at 257,045 words (and itself said to be longer than the Bible).

So, for the character detailing and the relationship building I loved this fic. From the first reading I probably even absorbed some of the relationship aspects into my own understanding of relationships. It was easy to get lost in reading this, but by the end of it, I wondered what I had read.

So I thought I would be giving this 5 stars, but I find myself giving it 3. Would I recommend you to read it? Yes. Read it if you have time on your hands, if you miss the HP world, if you're open minded about fan fic. Read it for an in-depth exploration of characters and their relationships with each other. Read it if you loved Sam and Frodo's friendship, or to read a deep platonic love between two male characters.

So I'm a big Harry Potter fan nerd, had my 38th birthday party at the HP theme park in Orlando, laugh if you like it was a blast. An fellow HP friend asked so what did you think of the Draco trilogy? The huh? I asked stupidly. And was thus nearly kicked out of the HP fandom. For those NOT in the know, the Draco trilogy is a self published online fan fiction set of 3 books by Cassandra Clare, oh she of The Mortal Instruments fame. (I disliked the Mortal Instruments, but thought her Infernal Devices series was fun steampunk fluff.) Except Claire pulled the Draco trilogy down off the web once she got famous, after it was up for only 2 weeks or so in its entirety, or so HP legend goes. But HP fans being the nerds we are, you can still find it online with a little digging. So, as a break from my insanely cerebral job, and because nothing sets me off like being told I can't find or read a certain book, I started reading. These books are the Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans of fanfic. You know they are just sugar and artificial flavor, and really bad for you, but they are strangely additive nevertheless. The good flavors- the humor. I found myself just howling at many many points in the book. (Bertie Botts Every Flavor Condoms, for example). The dialogue is fun- Claire has smart ass teenage wit down. The fake romance Trousers novels that Ginny is reading- I adored that bit. Who - or what- pray tell is Clare making fun of? The twilight books? Her own work? Fanfic or the romance genre itself? I don't know, but the fact that every character who picks up the romance novels can't seem to stop reading them, and finds them strangely addictive- that was a nice inside joke.
There are several earwax flavored moments. First, these books are WAY TOO long. I guess this is what happens when you self publish, apparently with no editor in sight. Second, whoa the teenage romance crud is over the top. But, again the humor helps. And speaking of romance, there is some level of slash fiction/gay subtext in there. Although I suppose come to think of it you do get that in her Mortal Instruments books also. Not that I have a problem with that, but in particular two male characters share a kiss that I just found gratuitous.
So, overall not great literature, but generally fun, and perhaps THE fanfic to end all fanfics, so maybe HP fans find it worth reading for that alone.

i'm slightly torn. I feel like I've just wasted the past 3 weeks of my life trying to finish this "fanfic" which is longer than like most novels. seriously. 1697 pages. What fanfic is that bloody long? It was like an on and off phase of reading... probably why it took me like 3 weeks. Some slow bits, some fast... She really likes her descriptions.

But on the other hand it wasn't terrible? Like I had to finish the trilogy and know how everything ends and all the fluffiness behind it all. But that said, it was rather predictable, and everything was like
called it gif photo: Colbert I called it! E8ygy-1.gif
but less dramatic..... I didn't like the ending though, it felt rather unresolved for me, but i'm extremely picky regarding endings. Tbh its actually quite resolved I just felt unsatisfied.

Anyways. That aside. like my last review for its prequel, do not read like a HP fanfic, because everything is out of character So read it as some other novel thingy, that's not a fanfic.

There is a lot more I could rant about but I don't like typing and its my nitpickings ^^ If you're curious just contact me somehow...

First off, this story was too long. Sometimes, the characters will be in dangerous situations and they'll start long and ultimately pointless discussions about love and desire and hope and fate and crap and...
But. I overall rather liked it. I couldn't be bothered though with all the descriptions of smells and tastes (she kissed him and he tasted of tears and blood and smoke, she smelt of sandalwood and love potions and ocean and blah...)
I admit I devoured the book. Plenty of suspense. Cliffhangers. Some predictable, like when , some not so.
This book was way too long.
The teenagers took themselves way too seriously with their love and sex and future and fate stuff in my opinion. They ALL behaved like aged people.
But. The book made me laugh. It was fun, once I got over a lot of unnecessary descriptions and descriptions and descriptions and descriptions and descriptions that Claire wanted to bore us with.
And in the end, it was just too bad that she wrote The Mortal Instruments after this. And that she supposedly made no money from this.
But. Good book.

Draco Veritas is book 3 in the Draco Trilogy fanfic.

This book was longer than the previous 2 put together! There were times when I got quite bored and the story sometimes just went on and on, with nothing much actually happening. I also really hated Hermione and the fact that she just couldn't choose between the boys, or how when she was all alone with Draco she'd be thinking about him and so on.

Draco is the only character that I still liked after finishing the book; all the others seemed so different from the Harry Potter books, almost unrecognisable. Parts of this book did make me laugh out loud.

Overall, a good end to the trilogy.

I am a Harry Potter fan and when I started reading this trilogy I made the mistake of wanting it to be like the Harry Potter series, but it isn't. After getting over that and reading this trilogy as I should have, as it's own story, I enjoyed it. There are some parts of these books that I enjoyed more than the Harry Potter series. Namely Draco. I do not wish to ruin this story but will say that I enjoyed the book and especially enjoyed the character of Draco

The first book of the trilogy was just right. The second was way too long, and the third one is ridiculously long. Twice as long as the second, which was already a monster. Still, I found it a bit less rambling than the second, and it does have the advantage of finally ending the saga.

I did enjoy the characters, and again there was an interesting plot, if you have the patience to finish reading it.

1 star removed coz of not getting engaged throughout.
It was quite boring in the middle due to which went on hiatus and took months for me to read but I am glad that I finished it.
One of those stories which don't leave any mysteries behind and give an ending to every single character.
Liked it.

Cassandra's Draco series encouraged me to write harry potter fanficiton, and inspired me to start writing original works as well. I wonder if i never stumbled upon this, if i'd be half the writer I am today. This series especally the first and second installment (Draco Sinister) hold a special place in my heart.

I personally found this book less addicting than the other two. I felt like there was less of a connection and I feel like that was due to it being too long, interesting bits were sidelined and other bits focused on for too long. This is still a wonderful series.

A massive tome to distribute for free! While the story was great and well thought out, and the dialogues, especially Draco’s, witty, sarcastic and gripping, the book was quite tedious – what with Passionate Trousers quotes, so much of roundabout discussions on love, the strange relationship between Ginny and Draco (and of course the others too!), the post-Voldemort episodes… There were things that did not gel well – Pansy striking Draco with poison (I mean Pansy, of all?!), Riddle diary revived by Ginny (and here I thought Basilisk fang was ultimate death), Ron being a Diviner, etc. and I also had problems digesting the Four Heirs thing from the previous books. Moreover, some situations have been stretched out like a boundless seashore with endless similes, comparisons, descriptions of emotions and physical reactions. All in all, while I’m glad I picked up these books, I’m a little disappointed that they spread into more than 3000 pages where perhaps it could have wound up in 2/3rd of it.
