It’s the roaring 20’s and the Black Renaissance has exploded in Harlem. From Marcus Garvey, to Ethel Waters, Sugar Hill is the place to be. That’s also true for The Cotton Club’s jazz singer Harmony Jones. Her soulful voice and unique beauty draws the attention of the most ruthless Sicilian mob boss Vincenzo ‘Vinnie’ Romano. And when her brother––a small time bootlegger––goes missing, Harmony is his only hope.

Harmony is a story of obsession and perseverance. A tangled tale of passion, lust, love and hate when two unlikely hearts collide.

I pulled this one up on my Kindle because I was watching the HBO movie "Bessie" with Queen Latifah (who is the definition of awesome), and I wanted to read something set at this time, and especially IR. I had downloaded is specifically because of the time setting and the storyline, and this was the perfect time to read it. I wasn't disappointed. This was a very good book.

Disclaimer: I will use the term 'colored' for black people because that is what black people were called at this time. This term is not appropriate to use anymore, but in the context of this story, it's timely.

Harmony sings the blues at the Cotton Club. Music is in her soul and it's her gift, how she pours out her anguish over the loss of her grandmother and her man. Her dreams of escaping a life bound by the restrictions of race and lack of money are given full rein when she sings. When her brother goes missing, she exploits the fact that powerful gangster Vinnie Romano seems captivated with her voice. She asks him to help her find her brother, knowing he'll have a price, and one that she's willing to pay. Set in a time of Prohibition when gang violence is near an all time high, this book delivers on the intensity.

I bought in on the chemistry between Harmony and Vinnie from their first meeting. I like that you initially don't know what Vinnie's motives are. He's a hard man and he keeps his heart buried deep. Coming over from Sicily with nothing, he's earned his status as a Boss with blood. And Vinnie definitely has an intimidating vibe. I like dangerous heroes, although I can't say I'm fond of mobsters. They aren't my cup of tea since I don't like brutality and the ruthless killing for profit and status associated with that kind of business. What hooked me in with Vinnie was his extreme appreciation for Harmony's singing and his love of blues music, a music that was strictly colored music at this time. They actually called them race records. For Vinnie to connect with such soulful music showed that he was deeper than he might have appeared. While at first, you don't get that race isn't an issue with him, you wonder that it can't be if he would connect so deeply with a culture so different from his own. Vinnie made me care about him. As Harmony sees his layers and the lion's heart he has, so did I. I appreciate loyalty and honor, and I don't tend to associate those with mobsters, but Vinnie clearly has those traits. He's a fascinating guy and I could see why Harmony loved him.

Harmony is equally layered. She's tough and independent and fiery passionate, but also sweet and demure. She's an artist and a believer deep in her soul, a dreamer, even in this world where colored people aren't allowed dreams. I loved how determined and fearless she is at the end of this book. That was a really bad and scary situation and she did something that only a lioness would do to save her man. Kudos to her for that.

I remember there is a great movie that I saw a long time ago called "Machine Gun Blues", starring Cynda Williams and Nick Cassavettes, about a colored blues singer who falls in love with an Italian mobster. It has a sad ending (sorry for the spoiler), and I always wished it had ended differently. I would like to thank Ms. Mynx for giving me a happy ending version of that seemingly doomed love affair. There is a time in this book where you aren't sure you'll get a happy ending, and I think I hardly breathed as I read the final pages of the book. The thing about Kindle books is it tells you how much time you have left in the book, and the last 20% was agony for me. But Mynx delivered.

I have a problem with erotica, and I try to avoid it. I just don't like all the 'anything goes' sex. I like to know there will be limits on what kinds of sex acts are depicted in the book. I don't mind steamy vanilla sex and plenty of it (so long as it doesn't take over the story), but I don't like the kinky stuff. A reference during the first love scene had me worried, but that stuff didn't take place on screen in the book, so I heaved a sigh of relief. While I do think this did have a bit more sex than strictly necessary, I can understand how important it was to show the passion and desperation of these two lovers, and how their love comes to the surface past their guarded armor and facades.

I won't say I'm a mafia/mobster romance fan, but I really did like this book. And since I'm a sucker for Early 20th Century romance, and I like reading about the 20s and 30s, it kind of comes with the territory. Prohibition was a very violent period in American history, and there are a lot of untold stories. I loved seeing what it was like a young colored woman and her Sicilian lover, that they did have a chance at a happy ending, even in their world of blood and strife. I learned some historical facts as I read that found very fascinating, such as which states it was legal to marry interracially during this period.

The writing was crisp and very organic and visually-stimulating. I felt like this was a cinematic read, and I would love if someone did make a movie out of this one day. I would definitely go see it! The music aspect was well-conveyed and integral to this story. The editing was pretty good, with only a few errors, mostly near the end.

I'd have to give this 4.5/5.0 stars because this was an intense, passionate and involving book that kept its hooks in me even when I was afraid to keep reading. I really cared about Harmony and Vinnie and I wanted desperately for them to get their happy ending together. I can see why Sienna Mynx is such a popular author.

Had to throw in the towel at 52%. I have loved other works by Sienna, but this didn't read like her at all. The 'chemistry' between the MCs felt very forced, the writing felt wooden and Harmony got on my nerves with her indecision and attempts to reconcile her church girl persona with her feelings for Vinnie. Just admit you're attracted to him and be done with it. The whole 'doing it for my brother' was almost secondary. She kept saying that Vinnie broke his promise to help her after she slept with him, and all I could think was, 'Uh, you didn't exactly lay out terms before you jumped into bed with him.' There was no clear direction there and this led to MCs who just seeed confused. Was she trying to save her brother, or had she been eyeing Vinnie since the first time he came to the club? Was he attracted to her voice (while not really being into 'colored' women) or did he look up what states it was legal to marry interracially (which would imply an attraction to non caucasian women)? He is a hard core mobster, but he's concerned about making her smile after one night. And, to be clear, I'm not saying this isn't possible. The development just wasn't there, in the story.

The characters went from an awkward (unsexy) first encounter to him insisting on introducing her to his men,and her telling Mabel off saying 'they were more than friends' in all of like 2 days. Pacing, anyone? Harmony kept saying stuff like, 'You're not a saint but you're not all evil either." And you know this, how? She just seemed silly to me. My fave character was Mabel and only because she told Harmony off, haha! Vinnie was good too, in mobster mode.

This is a great interracial love story taking place in Harlem during the 1920's. I fell in love the characters and felt like I was right in there with them fighting for their right to love freely. Starting to read my next Sienna Mynx novel "Buttercup".

Loved the historical accuracy. The Jazz Age is one of my favorite eras. This was a pretty copacetic read. Mony was a real sweet dame; I loved her feistiness! And Romano was a total alpha male!

First off I think the cover is beautiful. This is the 1st book I read. by Sienna Mynx. I liked the hot & steamy scenes. I liked Harmony's character. I liked the action in this story. The things I didn't like about this story it was too slow & I wish Harmony & Vinnie had more chemistry & romance. I would still check out other books by Sienna Mynx.

"Destiny, the winding path she traveled toward it, was set."
description

Let's see:
1 star-contains a mafia badass alpha
2 stars-features jazzy cotton clubbish heroine singer the hero pet names Songbird (great!)
3 stars-pays adequate homage to setting, style and dialect of the era
4 stars-bravely gives the reader forbidden romance set in the ROARING 20s

 4 stars
To get all criticism out the way, I will say this plot was fairly predictable in that you could guess the betrayer and some of the actions of the heroine. Secondary characters kind of lose their initial intrigue and potential impact due to swift turns in the plot. Along these lines, there is a sense that if backstory detail, flashback(a technique I admire when use right) or point of view had been utilized more creatively, then the story could have felt less choppy and more epic. Moreover this could have made setting a better character.

HOWEVER, this historical romance does deliver treats.

Songbird was looking him directly in the eye. He liked that. 'What a dame.'...Still, he wasn't a man to be teased and his songbird was tempting the beast in him.

I just loved it when Harmony (the sultry, making-it-on-a-wing-and-prayer heroine) sets her sights on the mob boss Vinnie Romano, a man of many contractions, who is cast as the prodigal immigrant son, who, like so many, came across the pond to the American Dream with nothing in his pocket but pride, responsibility and Old World code.

And it is here we find that though Vinnie may have the power and the heart of a lion (a piece of this symbolism subtly flutters at a point in the story), his way of ruling the jungle does not hold a lot of weight in the flash and burgeoning transformations within a new kind of urbanity.

Vinnie and Harmony soon face decisions of loyalty, family and survival--getting out of Harlem alive.

This book contains steamy scenes, a private song, lots of guns and an ending that is littered about parts of the American landscape.

A song for Vinnie and his songbird:Bound To You
Christina Aguilera, from Burlesque

I found a man I can trust and boy, I believe in us
I am terrified to love for the first time
Can you see that I'm bound in chains?
I've finally found my way

I am bound to you
I am bound to you

Three and a half stars for Sienna Mynx's "Harmony". This story made me more open to reading romance set in the 1920's. It's one of my least fave periods of history. But for a IR historical piece, it was more historically accurate than some other historical IR stories I've come across (They shall not be named).

There were no long drawn out inner dialogues/ monologues in this entire story. The characters spoke like how I imagined they spoke back in that time. Another pro of this story is Sienna Mynx's writing. The woman will suck you in. She has a gift and it shone throughout the story.

Right so my issues with the story...Harmony. She got on my nerves quite a few times and at one point SPOILER ALERT: I actually cheered her getting beaten because this broad can not be this dense. (I do not condone domestic violence).

Vinnie even admitted in the story my first gripe I had with her..."She didn't become his willingly. He exploited her desperation to find her brother to lure her into his bed." I understand this was a main plot point but seriously Harmony seemed to think she was invincible at one point and it got on my nerves.

I am happy to report the story is a HEA but boy is the road to the HEA one paved with blood, bruises and tears.

Description: When Harmony’s brother, a small-time bootlegger goes missing, the Harlem-Renaissance-era jazz singer turns to Sicilian mob boss, Vinnie Romano for help. Cue the epic romance.

The Good: This is going to be a pretty short review, because I really, really loved this novel. It’s a ton of story for your buck, and it reads fast. Most importantly, it fully displays Ms. Mynx’s growth as a writer. This is really epic storytelling, and Ms. Mynx has done some terrific character work with Harmony. She’s smart, sassy, and realistically conflicted. There are no two-dimensional characters in this novel, and even the side characters are rather fascinating.

The Bad: History buffs might thirst for even more Harlem Renaissance details.

The Naughty: Steamy. More sex than one might expect from a historical. Violence.

Editing issues: 3 typos found. Missing commas.

Publisher: The Diva’s Pen LLC (Indie)

Length: 236 pages

Final Grade: A

Happy Reading,

This book was so good I could not put it down loves comes from so many unexpected places and Vinny and Harmaony's love was that way. Harmony is a strong beautiful singer at the cotton club who catches Vinny's eye he wants her she needs him they fall in love,I know it sounds so simple right . Its not the story of how the fall in love is wonderful. They are a sexy couple what more would you expect from this author but the journey the take for this is wonderful and exciting. This book reminds of a movie I saw where Laurence Fishburne, played a mob boss . This book is written so well you feel like you are back in time. This is a book that will have you smiling when you finish because this is a well told love story.

I had high hopes for this book, but had to bail out fairly early. The characters were interesting, I loved the period setting, but the number of errors and problematic sentences was simply too distracting. Two examples:

"A life that stole her Lewis away. She cast her gaze away, but again was compelled to look his way again."

"Her orgasm built, it pushed higher by the motion of his tunneling cock and the rub of his granite tight thighs."

The voice is very lively, and with editing, this would be a really fun book. I'm going to reserve judgement on this author and consider her books in future IF they're published with somewhere I know does decent editing.

Loved. Loved. Loved. I honestly have always enjoyed "historical" romance, or period pieces..and I must say this was a personal favorite. The book is set in the roaring 20's which is a nice change, since a lot of the historical romance I've read is usually around the civil war era. Harmony is a singer whose brother goes missing and she seeks out Vinnie Romano to help her find out what happened to him. In my opinion, this book reads like a movie. The settings and dialogue are spot on and their relationship was surprisingly sweet, which I enjoyed. There was also a good amount of action and drama mixed in to keep you interested. Overall this book was a really great read!

stopped at 40%. Reviews and the blurb were the lure. The hero is not as interesting as I thought he would be. He is not on top of things like a Boss should be. He is the last to know about stuff going on in his business. The heroine talks like an illiterate. And yeah, I know it is another time and place or historical..blah..blah..blah.. but that is not what I am looking for. Maybe this time, it is me not you (book).

After reading the introduction, I expected a lot from the story, the characters and just everything. In addition, I wanted to read this story due to its historical content. I was slightly disappointed. The historical aspect was that the author mentioned the names of some well known gangsters from years ago and their illegal business. Very common knowledge.
The main characters weren't very impressive. Vinnie wasn't ruthless enough for me. I've read other mafia stories where the head was feared and always a step ahead of everyone else. Vinnie was slow and naive. For a mob boss he was too trustworthy which almost caused him everything.
I was just not a serious fan of Harmony. She just didn't give me much too work with. Its like she was missing something. She was brave but she needed something else.
I would recommend it to my friends so we can discuss it in detail. Happy Reading 😊

3 1/2 stars. Prohibition in New York City. Energy, creative spirit, jazz music, violence, the mob, old prejudices, racism, and new possibilities defined this age and are reflected in this book. I loved the relationship between Harmony and Vinnie but individually they annoyed me at times. Both were inexplicable blind at times when they showed they were aware of the same difficulties in other places in the story (details are not included because they would be spoilers). Emotions were running high which might be an explanation but I didn't buy that. At times the story dragged a bit.

Love and action drove this story to an explosive ending. Only reading it will tell you if love won the day. And if you want some spice to your day this will deliver as well.

Beautiful historical gangster romance

I’ve read the paperback version of this book years ago, before I was even married with two kids. Sienna is one of my favorite authors whose work I miss so much, that I decided to buy the kindle version since I can’t find the printed copy.
Vinnie and Harmony’s story is beautiful. From the way they met, to their fight at happiness and struggle with trust. They both found themselves and each other along the way. Hoping Miss Mynx would write more books. Not much authentic stories like this one in the IR world these days.

Gripping!

This book kept me hooked from start to finish!! The author did a wonderful job with her research of the time period. Vinnie and Harmony were made for each other and had to overcome a lot to be together. The author did a wonderful making it all very believable and I truly appreciate that. Fantastic, descriptive writing. I'm a longtime fan of Sienna Lynx and I'm glad I purchased this stand alone. Very happy customer and fan!

Effing brilliant!!!

Sienna Mynx, stitched, weaved and sowed all the pieces together with such finesse, that I felt that I was serenaded and seduced by a hypnotist. I felt for the main two characters and I was very much invested with every twist, and nail biting plot that Sienna Mynx created. Loved, love this story!!! Written well and constructed beautifully.

Love is mighty

I have seen this book so many times and just glance at it. I thought it was too short and maybe not be as good as her other series book. However, much to my surprise it's very good. I love the characters and the story was well written. Catching up on my reading and this book will be added to my favorites from this author.

I really don’t know how to read this book, the storyline is really strong and a great one. However, it ends on a somewhat weak note.
Though I appreciate everything everyone went through to achieve this end goal,,, I still ended the book feeling as if I was shorted something.🤨🧐😏

Okay

The storyline started out good but then it dragged on and was unbelievable... not Mynx’s best work... she can and did better. I think she was in a hurry to finish the book with out really thinking it through. Definitely not her best work. A real snoozer.

Sienna Mynx obviously did research on the gangsters during 1920s-1930s era. I enjoy reading it, but I don't think there is a closure for minor characters like Lil Willie. It seems to me that the ending is bit rushed.

Harmony: Is a story of race, love, and trust. This is a great story for anyone looking for a IR/ romance novel to read, this one is for you. Harmony is a top singer at the Cotton Club in 1920's. Jazz era. Vinnie is a very powerful mobster who finds Harmony to be a very lovely songbird, and the woman he must have. When Harmony comes to Vinnie for help finding her baby brother, he is willing to help her but for a price. Harmony must share his bed for as long as it takes to find her brother. Along the way you will read the battle of two strong will people who battle the people around them, and the hate they must face everyday. The love they feel is real and dangerous, because their kind of love is a crime. The story of Harmony and Vinnie will make you laugh, cry and become very angry, but you will love the journey Vinnie and Harmony will take to be together at all cost. Harmony's and Vinnie's story is a love of a lifetime. Enjoy.!!

I liked this story.

I love stories during this time period. I love strong female characters. I love sexy scenes. I love interracial romance. I love strong male characters. There was something a little off with this book that kept my admiration ‘in like’, instead of ‘love’, I am not sure what it was… I can say that I did not get why the characters were so into each other beside physical attraction. Male MC did seem to be replacing his old love, but who knows? It was not fully addressed. The couple loved music but besides that I think there should have been more. But regardless, it was a pretty good read.

I would have rated it higher but at the first test of faith in her man the heroine bailed and I was put off by her lack of trust in her guy when he never gave her reason to doubt. Don't get me wrong, I get it she's a Black woman in the 20's who was having an affair with a White man. But already, going into the affair, you have to have developed some trust cause you the only one who would truly get hurt/killed/shunned/etc. So there was that.

I could'nt get into this book because while reading it I was constantly thrown out of it due to the similarities to bith the movie Cotton Club and the show Board Walk Empire. It seemed like all the characters were borrowed from the former. Even down to the singer's younger brother (Nicolas Cage) double crossing the mob boss. And the brother hiding out in a church basement and the stealing of hooch is all from Boardwalk. YAWN.
