Living and writing in the Trossachs, in Scotland, where my Y A Shalean Moon Series is set.
I'm lucky, I have inspiration on my doorstep, and visitors galore. Not all are welcome--someone tell the cats, I really don't need field mice as guests!
When Rachel and her Dad moved to Scotland, she expected to experience some changes. A new house, a new school and new friends. There were some things though that she didn’t expect at all!
Although Rachel’s Mom – now deceased – was born in Scotland, she had lived in England all her life. Now, with a job offer too good to refuse, her Dad makes the decision to move to Scotland and Rachel finds herself far from London, her friends and everything that she knows. A miserable start to her first day of school leaves her wondering if she’ll ever fit in, but then she meets Leira. Fun, bubbly and outgoing, Leira and Rachel form an instant friendship, but it’s Leira’s older brother Brios that will bring the biggest changes into her life. Soon, Rachel discovers that there’s more to her new friends than meets the eye and even more troubling, there seems to be more to her own life than she knows about and she’s soon on the path to uncovering a secret that her Father has kept hidden since she was born.
Interwoven with suspense, romance, magic and danger, this story of discovery artfully introduces you not only to a case of wonderfully drawn characters, but also to the world of Shalea, a secret Scottish Tribe of shapeshifters. Rachel is faced not only with shocking discoveries that push her ability to believe to the limit, but also with a strong and profoundly deep first love. Will she be able to adapt to her new life or will she fall?
Having read the first three books in this amazing series, I can definitely recommend them to all fans of young adult literature. Tackling topics that tweens and teens are dealing with daily in a wonderfully subtle way, J Lilley has a unique voice and one that we want to listen to. I cannot wait to see what comes next!
A fresh new voice in the YA market, J. Lilley spins a riveting tale of one girl's discovery of her roots, and a life she never knew she was destined to live.
With breathtaking descriptions and a wicked sense of humour, this book will have you riveted until you reach the end. Can't wait for the next in this series.
Although aimed at the "Young Adult" market I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Hadn't read anything by J. Lilley before but am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
I don't go for rehashing the blurb in my reviews, nor spoiling it for other readers, but I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys "shifter" books. It's an innocent read for any age group.
Rach’s past is filled with secrets and not all of them are pleasant.
Poor Rach. Not only does she have to deal with the drama of making a major move to Scotland, she also discovers that her father has hidden a great deal of information concerning her heritage from her. Once Rach meets Brios, the revelations concerning magic and shape shifters come very quickly. Rach has an incredible amount of information forced on her all at once. At first, Rach is very reluctant to accept the truth about the shape shifters. However, I thought her resistance felt forced. So much in fact that it was really quite comical when Rach tries to convince herself that she is “dreaming.” Though I found Rach’s reactions entertaining, at a certain point, her actions failed to feel realistic, especially when the truth was literally staring her in the face.
Rach is very easy to like. She’s a smart girl with a bit of an attitude who isn’t about to let anyone push her around. Once Rach fully accepts her gifts, I have no doubt that she is going to be a very powerful leader within the Shalean society.
I also really enjoyed Rach’s budding relationship with Brios. It was clear from the moment they met that they had a strong connection. However, Rach is only fifteen and she knows she is much too young to be making a serious commitment. I admire Brios’ restraint and resolve to take things slowly. He never tries to force anything on her and lets her make her own choices. I truly believe they will be a very powerful team, and I look forward to watching the development of their relationship.
I feel that the conflicts in this tale were resolved much too quickly. There are a lot of interesting things going on in this story that I wish had been explored in greater depth. The ending felt rushed to me, especially the part where Rach was told about her history and the fate of her mother. I realize that Rach and Brios were in a difficult situation at the time, but I truly feel that Rach deserves much more than she was given. I hope she has the time to explore her past and new abilities in future installments of this series.
Over all, I enjoyed reading Discovered. The world Ms. Lilley has created is interesting and I found the concept of the Shaleans thought provoking. I certainly look forward to following the adventures of Rach and her friends in the next book.

Sometimes fate steps in and takes you on a path much different than that in which you should have been on. In this case, Rachel’s mum and dad fell in love upsetting the course that was laid out for Rach’s mum.
What would you do if you found that you could talk to friends without saying a word? How cool would that be?
Rach’s dad takes a new job which has them moving from London to Scotland where fifteen years or so, her dad Tony fell in love with her mum (who died). New school, new friends and new discoveries soon to be found out. With the new school brings new uniforms that seem to clash with red hair. This is important to most fifteen year olds as they have enough other problems trying to fit in as it is. Finding new friends was hard, but Leira helped Rach, an instant bond/friendship was formed. Leira’s brother Brios a couple years older than Rach and Leira (who are fifteen) senses that his mate is near.
Things start to happen fast the talking in the heads, which by the way Rach seems to take in stride. Then finding out that you are special like your mother was, you are part of Shape Shifters. You are now a Leopord shifter.
Guess what you didn’t even know it. What fun it is and yet scary to learn all about things that have been hidden from you all your life. Tony, Rach’s dad, is human and raised Rach as such. Now he must be there for her, helping her through all this, letting her know that she will always be his little girl. He helped her become a strong young woman with a good sense of who she is and now who she will be.
So now that you get the gist of the story, you might want to pick up Discovered to see what happens in the whole, family/ friend’s dynamics. Only to find out that things aren’t what they seem, yet it is rather easy to just take things in stride because your strong sense of who you are. J. Lilley does a good job of showing what it means to have good friends and family around to help each transitions of any kind during teenage years. The characters although not as fleshed out as I normally like were still very likeable. There were allot of different people to fit into the storyline and it became a little confusing at times. Overall it was a nice read and enjoyable on a young adult level. I can’t wait to see where J. Lilley takes us in the next book.
3.5 stars. This is a really great shifter book for young adults. It's the first in a series. Basically an up and coming 17 year old "leader" meets his 15 year old half human "one." It's a completely new world for Rach but that's okay because Brois wants to be her friend and teach her all there is to know about being a leopard shifter.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the story progresses.
