Deep within the walls of America's oldest inn, a secret document hidden away during the Cold War is about to be unearthed. Mitch and Polly McKenna don't know it yet, but they will soon be embroiled in a decades old drama of espionage and betrayal. After purchasing a historic grandfather clock for their fifth wedding anniversary, Polly becomes obsessed with startling discoveries about their new purchase: a hidden compartment with a peculiar key inside, and an inscription that reads strangely like a confession, pointing to a secret crime, a named victim.
As Mitch and Polly try to uncover the truth, their puzzle begins to take on bigger meaning for both of them, compelling them to redefine their notions of themselves and each other.
I read this book months ago, but I remembered it well when I saw J. Kinkade had joined GoodReads, and I am happy to see her here. Kinkade is an author with good chops for action and mystery. She constructs this story well, leading the reader down the story's path and pointing to a little information here, and a little more there, just what this genre is all about. But her strong suit is actually her characters, and the dialogue, in my opinion. Strong, charismatic characters that make the reader care what happens to them makes "Zero Line" a pleasure, the kind of book that makes us hope it turns into a series, because we want to meet these characters again.
I recommend "Zero Line" and J. Kinkade. I find her work to be solid, and very enjoyable. And, Jean, if you are reading this, I AM hoping for a sequel. :)
The content is interesting, characters are well developed, and the intriguing plot draws the reader in and makes you want to keep reading. The author is a good writer. What was annoying and irritating were the many errors scattered throughout the entire book that interrupted the flow of the story. I have read all five - the first and last books have the most errors. It’s all in the proofreading (I proofread). But if you can get past the errors, I think you will enjoy this series. 3.5 - 4 stars.
