Raymond A. Montgomery (born 1936 in Connecticut) was an author and progenitor of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure interactive children's book series, which ran from 1979 to 2003. Montgomery graduated from Williams College and went to graduate school at Yale University and New York University (NYU). He devoted his life to teaching and education.

In 2004, he co-founded the Chooseco publishing company alongside his wife, fellow author/publisher Shannon Gilligan, with the goal of reviving the CYOA series with new novels and reissued editions of the classics.

He continued to write and publish until his death in 2014.

I just thought these were the bees knees when I was little. The notion of controlling the choices was both pleasing and instructive.

Especially given that one of my major inhibitions to pleasure when reading or watching a film is when I encounter what I consider to be stupid decisions on the part of a character.

This lets me be responsible for throwing them into danger or resolution. Much more enjoyable.

I was a really lucky book-loving kid: my mom was a librarian, and I've been reading since age 5.

Every Saturday and some weekday evenings, I would go hang out at work with her.

I'm adding this to represent the countless CYOA books I read in the Story Bowl - a giant padded slouching vessel, upholstered with primary-colored vinyl - at the Cortez Public Library.

this series is fun and entertaining for those kids who are getting into chapter books but feel like their new level is a bit overwhelming. these books will amaze kids with their power to suck them in to these fantastical stories only to make them start over again to see how it could have turned out. yay for this newly reissued series! rad!
