Rate this book
This is a unique collection of previously published articles that will capture the hearts and imaginations of anyone going to Morocco, whether they are first-time visitors or returning travelers. Written by some of the finest authors and journalists, including Paula Wolfert, Michael Mewshaw, Rachel Billington, Nancy Newhouse, Marlisle Simons, and Christopher Petkanas, Morocco and all of its many facets are uncovered and explored.

Organized by themes, such as Current Events, Food and Drink, individual cities, Museums and Monuments, each theme is accompanied by an extremely detailed annotated bibliography that will, without a doubt, be as entertaining as the recommended books themselves.

Besides being a provocative literary-minded anthology, "Morocco" is also an invaluable resource. Containing a comprehensive practical information section, readers will find information on everything from changing money and tipping to language, car rental, attire, photography, and hiking.

The variety and depth of this unique collection provides a deep understanding of Morocco and its history and people that is sure to make any trip to the lower lip of the Mediterranean and North Africa richer and more rewarding. It offers much more than any typical guidebook on the shelves now, and best of all, it is perhaps as captivating to read after the trip as it is before.

A mixed bag, but some of the travelogues were worth it. Certainly if you are headed for Morocco, this is worth picking up. Just read it judiciously: when a story starts to bore you, skip along to the next one.

Collection of travel pieces and a lengthy intro to Morocco covering all major topics. I'm enjoying the range of topics and authors and usu. read a piece or two before bedtime. Interesting piece on Fez and how overpopulation is causing damage to the infrustructure and housing; interesting piece on the male cafe culture and getting lost in madinas. most stories are idealized and don't convey the full picture - the constant smell of sewage in merrikesh, the male harrassment, the fake guides, the constant harrassment to purchase no matter where you are, the poverty. But it's a depiction of the exotic and enjoyable to read even though not completely true to life.

What? You don't read travel books for comfort?

There are some marvelous pieces in this anthology, and the editor's own contribution at the beginning of the book is a treat.

One drawback however is the repetitive nature of some of the pieces... it seems every middle-age, well-heeled author stays in the same luxury hotels or dines at the same fabulous establishments. Definitely reflects a middle-aged outlook or approach to travel. Yet, it's a vicarious thrill for the armchair traveller.

Blegh. I was expecting more from this series, which purports to offer literary essays about the country and its people in addition to the traditional travel guidebook. In reality, most of the “essays” are merely travelogues collected from magazines. And as for the resources sections, the type is so small as to require a magnifying glass.

C- While I was so excited to pick this book up at the library, I didn't realize how boring it was. Much of writing lacks excitement, energy, or even imagination. However, I got a few ideas for Morocco from here.
