For over two decades Tonal Harmony has been the leading text for the two-year theory curriculum for music majors. Used at nearly 800 schools, Tonal Harmony has been consistently praised for its practicality and ease of use for student and instructor alike. The straightforward approach is supported by well-chosen examples and thoughtful exercises, and the total presentation is compatible with differing teaching styles and theoretical points of view. In addition, students can purchase a CD of recorded examples for use with the textbook, while audio examples for the workbook are available for download as MP3 files. For instructors, an extensive Instructor's Manual is available and rounds out this comprehensive teaching package.
I took all 4 semesters at my college. Music Theory 1-4 so I used the whole book. I took this book very seriously. I read every chapter at least twice and did all the problems at the end of each chapter since the answers were in the back of the book. I analyzed all the examples given very thoroughly. This helped me do very well in the class. Most of it did not feel like work to me since this is a major passion of mine. The book gives you a website to go to to find the recordings found in text and workbook along with other things.
useful tool and kind of fun if ur nerdy. a little outdated and prob best if u’ve already taken basic music theory (familiarity of clefs, knowing major/minor keys, basic chords qualities, structured and triads along with basic meters i’d say are necessary)
I really didn't like this textbook. It doesn't explain things well, doesn't define terms in the text, and a lot of the writing is pretentious and makes me feel stupid.
