I think, once a person gets to this point, if they haven't already read the other volumes, then they just want to know that the series is still strong. In fact, even if you've read the other volumes, you probably want to know if Pandora Hearts has begun to sag.

If that's why you're reading this review, I have to say this series is as strong as when it first started. In fact, this volume is absolutely stunning in its depth.

This volume focuses on two main things. First, the innocence of childhood and its subversion by violence. In some cases, the children are the victims of violence (or those who have violent goals) but in others the children themselves are the perpetrators, often after becoming a victim themselves. (Hope I phrased that right.)

Lily, for example. She's on the cover. In this volume, we learn why she has that tattoo on her face and what being a Baskerville actually means. It's an interesting concept. More importantly though, we find this information out through Break's friend Reim, who (in the previous volume) had joined Oz and the others in their search for the next seal. Lily attacked his group and left him alive so she could see his Chain. She's a heartrending blend of an innocent child who only wants to be loved and a murderer who will kill without hesitation if Glen wishes it.

And her story is definitely not the saddest in this volume. Not by a long shot.

We also get to see the friendship between Leo and Elliot: how they met, how Leo became Elliot's valet, and who Leo really is, personality-wise. There are also hints of something darker at the source of their master/servant bond, shown through Elliot's flashbacks of what looks like a suppressed, and very bloody, memory. And the worst part is, that memory seems to be tied to Fianna's House, the orphanage previously mentioned as being tied to Pandora...and all that that implies.

Finally, once again this series shows me why I fell in love with it. Actions have consequences. Break...good gosh, Break. I felt for Elliot, for the orphans, for Reim and Lily. All of those stories either horrified me or made me look for the tissues. Sometimes both. But Break's story is heart-rending on a whole new level.

Ever since he lost his sight (mostly) a couple volumes ago, Break has been doing so well that it's easy to forget that he can't see. He's still smart, funny, and good in a fight. We're reminded of his inability only when Sharon asks him to dance in volume 12, and that's a conscious choice, not a screw-up.

However, in this volume, the consequences of his sight loss are more grim, and he knows it. Clues he could have picked up on his own only come to his attention when someone else talks about them, and in one instance he has to involve Gil in trying to discover something. Gil, naturally, is clueless and wants to know why Break would need his help.

It's at this moment that we see how much his body's deterioration has been getting to Break. He's not okay, he's not the same as he once was, and it's brought on more despair than he's been showing. When we finally get a glimpse of what it's like to see through Break's eyes, I swear I felt so much admiration that he would have the guts to even try to keep going forward with his goal that I'm convinced I'll be useless for days afterward if Mochizuki kills him. But even at that moment, he doesn't collapse into a little pool of self-pity, oh no. He's still both Mad Hatter and White Knight and all that comes with both.

I have never wanted a character to live more than Xerxes Break.

One last thing before I move on,

Other highlights:

* The interaction between Oz and Leo. Very nice.

* Sharon's reaction to the first corpse of the evening. It shook her, but she kept going. And I loved how quickly Break noticed her reaction and yet how he trusted her to keep going. He focused on what he needed to do.

* The reaction of the Baskervilles to Lily's arrival.

* Ada's worry over Vincent.

* Reim's chain. Seriously, I did not expect it at all. In line with that, Break's opinion on it made my heart glow. Their friendship is a real treat to watch.

*

* The contrast between Elliot's relationship with his snobbish older brothers (who do love him btw) and his relationship with Gil, his adopted brother.

"So please, Oz-kun...if I turn out to be the root of all this evil...do not waste your forgiveness on me. Save Elliot. And...kill me with those hands of yours, okay?..."

"I'm all right. I won't die so easily. "All right...Big sis?"

Elliot...I am so so so so so sorry...

I have no words to express what just happened to him. It was possibly one of the most tragic things I have read about, or seen on tv, or in real life. Death steals so much from you than just that person, and to know that someone close to you might be the cause for your endless suffering...what do you do?

We watch how Elliot and Leo met, and it wasn't the best of impressions. But they have worked through their differences, and are no longer the "commoner" and the "aristocrat" or the "valet" and the "master." Despite what Elliot's family thinks of his friendship with Leo, they both care so much for each other. To fangirls of them, I can't agree with this pairing. They are like brothers to me.

And Reim...oh Reim....

Break is frustrated with himself, causing him to hurt others as he tries to make up for what he lost 2 volumes ago, while Oz and Alice are cornered in a dangerous situation.

And I am sitting here, begging my characters not to die...2 already have, and yes, they are from the main cast...so NO none of them are safe. Anyone and everyone can be killed, and I just hope my favorites somehow survive.

I want all of them to, but it's futile to wish for that, after seeing those people die.

Don't let the image of the sweet smiling girl on the cover of volume 13 fool you. This is Lily, and she's a mass murderer. She's also incredibly naive and childlike. And thus she follows right in step with the insanity within Pandora Hearts. And as insane as this story can get, especially the characters, the more compelling it continues to become.

In this volume, Oz's society debut is well underway, and so is the investigation to find one of the seals. It's a race to see who can find the seal first - our heroes or the Baskervilles. But wait, there seems to be a third player in all this, and this third player may also be the head-hunter that has been alluded to since way back in volume 2? Sign me up! I can't wait to see where this is going to go.

Um, Jun Mochizuki has no problem killing off characters. It's kind of thrilling to read a story where you don't know who is going to live and who isn't going to live (do I sound morbid or what? but truly, if there are no stakes in the matter, why should I care? if there's no risk, is anything ever gained in a story?). At the same time, I am almost certainly positive that one particular character is still alive. If this wasn't the case, I think there would have been absolute mayhem from a certain other character at the end of the volume instead of the intense anger that we see.

Highlights include Elliot and Leo's shouting match, complete with table tossing, chair throwing, and vase breaking. It's a wonderful scene. From there we get some much anticipated back story to Leo and how he became Elliot's valet. We also get the most fabulous line from Break to the whiny Gil: "You're a spoiled brat who can't do anything unless Oz-kun is around. You shouldn't have such a high opinion of yourself...!" You tell him, Break. If there is one single character that I can't stand in this series it is Gilbert. That Gil is emo and mopey beyond comprehension is an understatement. He's important, so of course he's not going anywhere, but oh, I wish he would. I'll settle for Break chewing him out any day, though.

The drawback to this series is primarily the question: where is Alice in all this? She should be central to the story, right? She's Oz's chain. She's connected, if not central, to the tragedy 100 years ago. She's the twin of the Intention of the Abyss. And yet, in recent volumes, she continues to have a very minor role. I hope to see this change. Some of the most compelling moments in this story have been when she has been most vulnerable, opening up to her fears and her worries about regaining her memories and trying to figure out who she is now. I'd like to see us get back to that, and I hope after the next volume, which I think may wrap up this current arc, we will.

Pandora Hearts 13 is a lesson on emotional damage in manga form

Elliot and Leo’s first meeting?? Incredible

‘So please, if I turn out to be the root of all this evil, don’t waste your forgiveness on me. Kill me with those two hands of yours’ 😭😭😭

The character deaths?? Multiple?? Main cast?? No one is safe and I am terrified.

Elliot and Leo had a fight and say things they probably don’t mean but, later on we see how they met and how much they truly care for each other, even if they come from different places and families.

Unfortunately, we also witness the little Baskerville fighting against Reim, and even if she doesn’t truly understand why her “family” are the bad guys here, she basically beats him to death.

These guys are planning to replay the events of the Sablier Tragedy once again and everything was perfect to held a new ceremony/ritual to break the seals that contained Glenn Baskerville’s soul.

At the same time, the chain Humpty Dumpty, previously mistaken for the Head Hunter, makes its appearance, so we’re left with another big cliff hanger!

This volume contains Retrace 50 – 53.

Review for complete series

I'd like to start by saying that with my two decades of manga reading, Pandora Hearts has recently earned its way to being one of the best manga series I've ever read - and to think I almost didn't pick it up!

There's actually a bit of a story to it: Pandora Hearts was being released around the time I knew I would be moving overseas. At the time, I had no idea how moving to the other side of the world would affect my manga buying. Also at that time, I was working at a comic store with staff discounts at my disposal and I never had to worry too much about picking up whatever I fancied. When I first saw Pandora Hearts, I thought the art looked beautiful and this just might be a really good manga. It also struck me as a manga series that could go on for quite a while [which was a reasonably accurate assumption as 24 volumes is not a length I could commit to lightly]. Not knowing how I'd get my hands on manga or how long this series would be let me to putting it back on the shelf. And I confess, it was filled with quite a bit of regret.

When I finally did move overseas - a family friend had a good bye gift. The shape was easy to discern: it was undoubtably a manga volume. While thankful for receiving a gift, I was also nervous: having worked in a comic store, I knew for sure: I either already own it or am not interested in it. In addition, the friend in question doesn't know the first thing about manga. To my surprise, it was the first volume of Pandora Hearts which was probably the single only volume she could have taken from the shelf that wasn't already in my possession and did interest me. How she managed to pick out that one I don't know, but it's a coincidence I feel thankful for and, in some cheesy way, made me feel like it was just meant to be that I read Pandora Hearts after all.

Fast forward to 2023, I finally found the time to read this 24 volume series and am absolutely delighted. My original observation remains: the art is absolutely stunning. With the exception of a oneshot debut work, it's hard to believe that this is quite close to being a beginner's work - you'd not believe it just looking at the first volume's art.

My other thoughts are largely around how hard it is to praise a story you think is so thoroughly good as this one is. It's not really a plot you can explain to someone, it's a story you have to read for yourself as even the latest volumes will throw some surprises at you. But I think, besides the art, what really contributes a lot to this work are the characters. Oz might be our main character, but we have a large cast and they are all lovingly created. There's hardly a character you won't be able to like in one way or another, even the most broken of them. It's quite a feat to create a story that makes you care and worry about almost every character's fate.

And worry you can indeed: it has light and beautiful moments, but it is essentially a dark tale and you'll constantly worry whether the characters will make it through. Needless to say, there are losses throughout the story. There are plenty of twists and turns, things that will surprise and shock you.

I will also add that the plot is complex and not always easy to follow. Some characters have multiple names - this becomes even more difficult for some characters who also have multiple personalities who also have multiple names. Not everything in the plot made entire sense to me - it's hard to say whether they were plot holes, not explained well enough or I was simply missing something - a reread might answer that. But regardless, when these moments arose, I decided to just go with the flow and it didn't disrupt my reading experience at all.

Besides a bit of confusion here and there, I can't fault this series with anything. The pacing is well done, the 24 volumes were neither too long nor too short [something I often complain about] and it wrapped up nicely. For such a dark read, there's also a lot of soft story telling which just concludes this with a very wholesome ending. There is close to no romance but I wasn't missing it [and I'm a big romance reader] - the friendships and bonds between the characters were absolutely beautiful even without much romance thrown in.

I'm glad I did read this series and it is definitely going down as one of my favourites. Highly recommended.

This whole volume was insane. The added backstory between Elliot and Leo was nice though. How they met was sweet and I'm glad Elliot chose Leo as his valet despite the fact Leo was a commoner. I do suspect that the "head-hunter" may be Leo since Break suspected Elliot of being it but he was wrong. Speaking of, Break was acting odd. Why would he insist so much that it was Elliot? Unless he was trying to prevent Elliot from finding out it was Leo...also, when Gilbert suddenly punched Break I was like "Wow. Did he really just do that?" I didn't think Gil had it in him to do that, they both didn't think that would happen...

Also, what is it with Break wanting to join forces with Lottie? Is it just Lottie in particular or all the Baskervilles? Or is he just trying to get inside Lottie's head like what's his play here?

Reim's death felt so sudden and downright depressing. I wasn't expecting him to die like that. Especially since that girl, Lily, made it seem like she'd spare his life. But as soon as Reim shot her, I knew it was over for him. He shouldn't have underestimated her like that. She may be a child, but he saw firsthand what she and her dog were capable of. Like man, he could've lived, or at least for a little while longer if he hadn't shot her like that. It saddens me that Break had to see him like that and now he wants to avenge him, his friend...I just hope Break doesn't get himself killed over it...especially since he's going blind and he's in a vulnerable position right now because of his blindness and the fact he's probably overemotional right now since his friend just died.

Oh and Vanessa's death truly was shocking to me. I literally got chills....I wasn't expecting that to happen at all...

No, no, no! Mochizuki, what have you done!? How could you ?! I have so many feelings right now, it’s not okay.

I’m not okay.

But I have to know how the series ends!

Do not let the cute little cover deceive you. This volume is not cute. It’s brutal and quite gruesome. With plot twists that had me turning pages, and turning back to make sure I read that right, I couldn’t put the book down.

Just as one question is answered, another is asked. Now that readers have been introduced to the Headhunter, who is Humpty Dumpty and why does he/she have to be so stinking evil? Or is he/she? Pandora Hearts certainly has a way with having well-developed characters. Even when it comes to the antagonists, there’s more to them than it would seem.

I will say this, though--these books would be a lot easier to read if I could read them in succession instead of three at a time from the library. It usually takes me about an hour per volume, and I bet I can finish all 24 in two days tops.

I gave this book 4/5 stars for fast-paced plot, but I still wanted to throw it out the window. Is that the mark of a good book, I suppose? See Pandora Hearts, Vol. 1 for my recommendation.

Picking up where I left off. I honestly have no idea what's going on anymore, but I still love Xerxes, even when he confuses me. I love Elliot's dynamic with Leo and Gilbert, weird as it is... the Nightray family finally got a lot more background, and I was THERE for it.

Apparently, I stopped right before everything went unhinged, but maybe that's because I kept rereading Volume 12, essentially the calm before the storm, before I got caught up in school. Might have to go back and read even more of it in reverse xD
