I basically agree with every other review here. While the novella within isn't that compelling, nor the first short story, the entire book is worth it for the last short story which gives us the tale from Holo's perspective, a series first. And while, once again, the story is none to compelling within this short story, the characterization and fleshing out of Holo's character and the love she shows for Lawrence is absolutely heart warming, even if it is sometimes wise-assish as is Holo's way. It's an absolutely adorable story that, as someone else has said, manages to give us a better look at the romance than the last six books combined. In fact, my biggest problem with the series is how drawn out the romance is and how it's not always very direct. It's strange that a thirty page story can somehow give us a better view at how Holo thinks of her companion than the 1300 pages that came before.

I love this series. Holo and Lawrence are both great characters and even if the romance is drawn out, it is still adorable.

Not really one of the strongest books in this series, but it was kinda expected since this is a side stories volume.

In Summary

Hasekura-sensei takes a break from Holo and Lawrence’s wanderings in the north to share three Spice and Wolf vignettes. Fans of the anime and manga series will recognize the two short stories, which feature Lawrence and Holo. The novella, on the other hand, takes place far in Holo’s past as it tells of her journey with a pair of children who’ve been cast out of a manor. And though she earns points for protecting the poor little waifs, we discover that even children aren’t spared a wisewolf’s mischief.

The Review

For those curious about Holo, Lawrence, and Col’s ongoing journey, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Volume 7, as the back cover states, takes a break from their adventures to present a series of short vignettes. They consist of the novella, “The Boy and the Girl and the White Flowers,” and two short stories, “The Red of the Apple, the Blue of the Sky” and “Wolf and Amber Melancholy.”

According to the author’s notes, the novella features “Holo’s big-sisterly side” as it delves into Holo’s past. I’d hoped it would be about how she came to settle in her wheat field, but it has nothing to do with her old village or even Yoitsu. Instead, the story tells of an earlier journey. However, the journey is not Holo’s but that of two children. Former occupants of a rustic estate, they find themselves thrust into the wide world with only one another to rely upon.

The two young sojourners are opposites. The boy Klass is uneducated while the girl Ayres can read and write, but she has led such a sheltered life she’s never seen flowers growing in a field. So when the manor’s new master throws them out, Klass is constantly having to help Ayres. But Klass himself is only ten, and they soon find themselves in dire straits. Fortunately for them, they encounter Holo, who takes them under her wing. But her aid is not without a price. She teases poor Klass is badly as she does Lawrence, which surprised me given the gentler treatment she displays toward Col in Volume 6. Meanwhile, Ayres gets spared the brunt of Holo’s jabs and jibes. By the end of the novella, I felt thoroughly sorry for Klass, and Holo came off as a mean big sister figure indeed.

The short stories, on the other hand, feature Holo’s gluttony, according to Hasekura-sensei. Lawrence appears alongside her in these stories, which were both included in the Spice and Wolf anime. In “The Red of the Apple, the Blue of the Sky,” Lawrence gets to show off his business sense as he and Holo go shopping for clothes. Of the three stories, this is the only one that focuses on trade, though it isn’t quite an economics lesson. And though Lawrence does teach Holo something new, she, of course, manages to one-up him in the end.

Poor Lawrence seems ever at the mercy of Holo’s demands and sharp tongue so “Wolf and Amber Melancholy” is a refreshing change of pace. It is, as Hasekura-sensei mentions, the first time he writes from Holo’s perspective. Not much talk of business, but there is a bit of medieval medicine theory with our wisewolf sick in bed. Considering how much she frustrates and embarrasses Lawrence, it’s fun to see her frustrated and embarrassed as she deals with illness and jealousy. It’s also nice to know exactly how the wisewolf feels about her travel companion for once.

I should mention that the text is a bit choppy. I’m not sure if it’s because of the original Japanese text or the translation, but there are several short phrases and short sentences bunched together that makes for a less than smooth read. Plus, there are also a couple grammatical errors in the text.

This light novel includes the title page, three two-page spreads, and the table of contents printed in color as well as ten black-and-white illustrations.

4 stars - i enjoyed it and will probably read again; however I'm not jumping to recommend it as i would others

A collection of stories, the first is novella length and honestly cute but also rather boring and slow.

The second short story I think is a part of the anime with Holo wanting new clothes and i enjoy it as i would enjoy reading a short fanfic.

The last short story is from Holo's pov and i LOVE IT. That one was hard to put down. The ending left me warm and happy inside too which is something i needed today. Good stuff.

Side Colors is a book with 3 short stories that doesn't really have anything to do with the main story-line.
It was both a refreshment and not to read them, as I now am out of Spice and Wolf books to read, and don't know when I'll get my hands on the next in the series! I had hoped to make this one last longer, but I've found that I seem to fly through these books, despite finding the language heavy at times.
Anyway, to this book.
I wrote individual reviews for each of the shorts, and will post them here, then set a rating based on their collective ratings.

Short nr. 1, but the last one I read as it was the longest one.
THE BOY AND THE GIRL AND THE WHITE FLOWERS

The longest short in this book and set long before Lawrence was ever born, it gave a picture of Holo and how she cares for people, but I didn't much like Klass, so kept falling in and out of the story.
Liked the deers, though.

3/5

Short nr. 2, and the first I read.
THE RED OF THE APPLE, THE BLUE OF THE SKY

A fun little story set just after book 1 finishes. It gives a good impression of the relationship between Holo and Lawrence, and I wish it was actually part of the original book, as it was just (mostly) about the two of them.

4/5

Short nr. 3
WOLF AND AMBER MELANCHOLY

Set just after book 2 finishes

This short was written from Holo's POV, and I'm so happy about that! It put some of her actions that seemed random to a tired mind into a whole new light, and I hope there are more of these stories in future books.

4.5/5

Coming into the story I didn't realize until purchase that Volume 7 is not actually part of the main story, instead it focuses on a Side Story from a different time period starring Holo. I don't believe this is the author's Best work and without trying to criticize the the story story too much it just seemed boring and washed out to me. don't get me wrong it's nice to get a backstory or a Side Story on a character but this Side Story really didn't seem to have relevance at all to the main story and in all honesty it can probably be skipped if you're only interested in the main story. I pushed through this volume but honestly I can't find myself wanting to recommend it to anyone.

This light novel consists of three short stories. I admit I had to go through two readings in order to develop this review.

If one is expecting a continuation of the main story, or some addendum that would help enhance your experience viewing the anime, then don't. The third story is the first episode of the Second Season, but helps present it from Holo's point of view by providing her monologues. The thing is, the anime's viewing angles and use of character expression in its scenes already helped portray some of Holo's interpretations of Norah and Lawrence. We get to hear from Holo directly, but the anime tried to make sure we could infer Holo's POV without the need for her to comment on characters or what they were doing/thinking.

So with out of the way, I would say that I enjoyed this book. Although the first story may seem somewhat plotless, it does portray an episode in Holo's life where she was a supportive individual. But, being Holo, the main male lead of the first short story does suffer the same kind of teasing as Lawrence does!

The Second story has scenes that were in the anime as well. It's just Holo buying clothes and talking about her favorite apples. The entertainment comes from her commentary and Lawrence's attempts to placate her, as usual.

While some may find the story a tad dull or pointless, it does fit Hasekura's focus on character banter and emphasis on Holo's particular charms. In that sense, it firmly fits the rest of the series' tone and 'point'.

Hah, the series finally mellowed down a bit , but that maybe because this is just a collection of "side stories". Also, given how the series has been making it so hard to adjust to reality, the slowing of pace was not unwelcome :') I did not care much for the story of Klass and Aryes, but it was nice to read something from Holo's perspective for a change.

Huh, this is the first Spice and Wolf volume that I haven't given five stars. Short-story collections are always taboo for me. I'm always just so meh with all of them. Isuna Hasekura didn't necessarily disappoint, but this volume inherently did not live up to his prime capabilities that the author has clearly demonstrated when crafting the main series.

The first novella was... strange. I really was not fond of the direction he took with the characters of Klass and Aryes. Klass's perspective was just so boring compared to Lawrence's (maybe I'm just way to used to him by this point idk), and Aryes... I just don't care about her either. She was basically Norah--the stereotypical shy girl--except 50% less interesting.

Thankfully, the two short stories that followed made up tenfold for the lackluster opening. The plots were mundane from a story standpoint, but I loved reading about Holo's clothes shopping adventures and brooding and lamentations over being bed-ridden and sick, having to rely on he precious sheep, Lawrence. The Lawrence x Holo banter was amazing, as always, and the lack of it in the first novella was probably what immediately put me off on it before I even finished the first page.

And I almost forgot to mention, the last short story is in Holo's perspective!!! Finally!! I finally got a glimpse into the mind of one of my absolute favorite characters ever. What a treat!

I bought this one because I like the series. This one in particular, Side Colors, is an interquel of sorts. It has three stories. One takes place between Volume 1 and 2, another takes place between 2 and 3 and the other (I think) predates the main narrative. I will look over all three and then assign a grade.

The first story is the main story. It is the longest by far. It is basically Holo playing Trickster Mentor/Cool Big Sis to a pair of orphan children.

It is from the perspective of one of the children, Klass. He and his companion, Aryes, are traveling to the ocean so they can fish for a living. The meat of the narrative is Holo teasing and teaching them (but especially Klass). It is an interesting change of pace in more ways than one.
Unlike Lawrence, Klass is never presented as Holo's equal. It is more like a boy who believes himself more mature than he is traveling with his big sister who is only too willing to prove otherwise. The fact that he's also traveling with his girl-crush increases the embarrassment potential all the more.
Secondly, this entire story takes place in the wilderness. They walk through grasslands on a cart road and then a forest. There is no town and so the cast is very small and the economic factor is likewise diminished.
It is not a complete story but rather a complete "arc" from such a story.

The second story has already been adapted to the anime. It the part where Lawrence has money changed so he can buy Holo's "town girl" clothes. It is short and fun. The real prize is the third story.

This one, I think, has also been adapted to anime. It is the victory dinner with Nora the shepherdess and Holo falling ill. This is a gem because it is from Holo's perspective. It was a fascinating look into her mind. For instance, she is deliberately Tsundere. This is for fun but also out of fear.

Trickster Eric Novels gives "Spice and Wolf volume 7 - Side Colors" an A+

Some people consider this book superfluous in history, someone considers it necessary. You can skip this book while reading or read some chapters selectively. Personally, I don't like storybooks, but chapter 3 fell into my soul.

== No spoilers ==
Chapter 1 tells the story before meeting Lawrence when Holo meets the boy Klaus. Sometimes it was long, sometimes boring. Just a nice addition.

Chapter 2 tells the events that you must have seen in the anime about buying and reselling Holo's clothes. Here the story is better

Chapter 3 tells the story from the perspective of Horo during volume 2 with the shepherd Nora. The author perfectly showed the storm of emotions of Holo and her attitude towards Lawrence.

In my opinion, few people liked chapter 1, because we expected to see a story about a merchant and his companion, and here are faces unfamiliar to us, about which we know little. In any case, the story deserves your attention.

Некоторые люди считают эту книгу лишней в истории, кто-то считает нужной. Эту книгу можно пропустить при чтении или прочитать некоторые главы выборочно. Лично мне не нравятся сборники рассказов, но 3 глава впала мне в душу.

== Без спойлеров ==

Spice and Wolf, Vol. 7: Side Colors by Isuna Hasekura

Synopsis

Spice and Wolf, Vol. 7: Side Colors is a collection of three side stories set in the same universe as the main Spice and Wolf series. The first story follows Holo, a wise wolf spirit and merchant, as she travels through the countryside, encountering a variety of people and problems. The second story tells the tale of Lawrence Kraft, a young traveling merchant, as he tries to make his way in the world of business. The third story focuses on Norah, a young shepherdess, and her faithful companion, Enek, as they navigate the challenges of life in a medieval world.

Review

Spice and Wolf, Vol. 7: Side Colors is a delightful collection of stories that provide a glimpse into the world of Spice and Wolf beyond the main protagonists, Lawrence and Holo. The stories are well-written and engaging, and they feature all of the charm and wit that fans of the series have come to expect.

One of the things that makes Side Colors so enjoyable is its diversity of stories. The first story is a heartwarming tale of Holo's journey of self-discovery, while the second story is a more humorous and lighthearted look at Lawrence's early days as a merchant. The third story is the most dramatic and suspenseful of the three, and it features a well-developed cast of characters.

Another strength of Side Colors is its world-building. Hasekura does a masterful job of creating a believable

Isuna Hasekura struggles a bit (compared to the full LN stories) with this set of shorts. However they are rather nice for fans of the series, although a bit frustrating as they occur prior to previous events, so they only help to flesh out the characters (particularly Holo) a bit more without moving the main story arc forward.

My favorite is the last, Wolf and Amber Memories. It is a bit weak; Isuna Hasekura apparently said he had difficulty writing from Holo's perspective and IMO this shows. For those of you just picking up this series, there are some listings showing where these stories should fit in the overall timeline and you might want to try using that order - the last short occurs after LN vol. 2 and does help to give you an idea how Holo is thinking of things at that point.

This is definitely the weakest of the books so far, not that I didn't expect that going in. The first story is too long, but the two characters make a compelling dynamic and their simple goal of somehow reaching the ocean despite being destitute children who don't know how to survive in the wilderness is interesting. It doesn't end in the most satisfying way, and I kind of hope I get a Part 2 in a later Side Colors book.

I did really love Holo's narration at the end of the book, which gives so much insight into her character and her view of Lawrence, which we don't always get a very direct view of. Only in Holo's narration do we get to see her be completely honest--or about as honest as Holo is willing to be with herself.

First short story: very slow-paced, kinda boring at times, and why the hell would they do a prank that heavy, with so much in the line? I got really confused. The whole setup didn't make any sense, everything was so loose.

Second short story: ah, the usual combo doing their stuff. Fine as it is.

Third short story: narrated through Holo perspective, really interesting to get into the the stubborn, yet proud Wisewolf's mind. The presence of Norah, the shepherdess, made everything better, as it roused different feelings of jealousy, love, caring mixed with her usual behavior. Very nice to see it.

I started this short story volume a few months back but after finishing the first story I got distracted by something else and the book sat unloved in my bag for much too long. It's a shame because the second and third stories are far stronger than the first and once I decided to pick the volume up again, I flew through it in no time at all. The third story was especially good and now I'm left wanting the next volume. A sure buy for my next physical book bulk order, I think. :)

Taking a break from the 'main' story, _Side Colours_ is a collection of three different side stories set within the Spice and Wolf universe. Although it is an interesting change, I found it hard to maintain interest in the first side story which did bring the rating down for me a bit. Overall however, it's not a bad installment and certainly the last side story performs a fantastic bit of character development.

The next volume resumes the main story again, but it'll be interesting to see if I find the next installment of side stories in Volume 11 better on average than this one.

This is the first side story volume in this series, and overall it is mostly less important because of it.
The first story is the majority of the volume, and although I did enjoy it, you could probably skip it and little would change. The other two are very short stories based around Holo that are the main reason to read this volume in my opinion. It is good to see older stories about her, and to see her point of view when travelling with Lawrence. I recommend reading this volume if you are a diehard fan, but otherwise you can probably skip this volume.

A couple of shorter stories in this light novel -- one being quite a departure from Lawrence, and quite enjoyable for what it is.

While it's good to see Holo being Holo across different times, it's almost BETTER to see her as a non-romantic interest. A wolf god -- at least to me -- is super annoying when she "hunts" her romantic prey. Wise Wolf or not, it irks me to no end.

That's not to say it's not an utter comfort read for others. I have been enjoying it on a certain level all along. But seriously... she's SO HIGH MAINTENANCE.

Ughhhh.

This was really a breath of fresh air. Not really the novella at the beginning, but the two short stories inside.

I think my only complaint is the book really highlights how maliciously cunning Holo is at her manipulation tactics. She is completely aware of them, and is very intent on using them with surgical precision, and that turns me away from her a tiny bit more than it should for a good relationship with a literary character should allow for.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the inclusion of the ancient medicine as well as the whole Apple story.

I am honestly flabbergasted by how shockingly bad this was. The first short story started off amazing, getting thick into a story long since forgotten. Yet ruins it by having a bs ending. The second story is legit there to pad the book out and add some context to a book 1 plot hole. Story 3 was cool as it’s from Holos perspective, but why in gods green earth did they add this much lust for Lawrence. Like to an unhealthy degree. This is DEFINITELY a fun and EXPERIMENTAL book for Hasekura. Then again doesn’t excuse how bad it is

This one was a series of stories instead of an actual novel. The first story was the longest, and my least favorite, but still good. The second and third stories were actually in the anime as single episodes. The third story was rather interesting though because it's from Holo's perspective, which is the first time we've seen her perspective and it's pretty eye opening, especially after watching the anime. I really enjoyed it!

A compilation of 3 side stories, one before Holo met Laurence and the other two with.

The prequel storyline felt like filler.. mostly just reiterating Holo's playful side and how a younger boy could not keep up with her games.

The last story in Holo's perspective was the best though, interesting to finally hear her thoughts during the back-and-forth convos with Laurence.

I'd give this a 3.5/5, but round up to 4/5 just because of the last side story.

The weakest volume so far, but still enjoyable for a fan of the series. There is no plot development as the entire volume is composed of side stories, one of Holo's past, two from their journey together. Of the latter, one is a well-known story from the first few volumes as seen from Holo's perspective which a fan of the series will undoubtedly find to be most interesting.

The two short stories were fun reads but I really liked the novella that opened the book. It’s really great to see some of Holos adventures without Lawrence. Really loving this whole series. My original plan was to use this as a palette cleanser between other books but now they have become some of my favorite books and I find myself wanting to read two or three volumes between other books. :)

An adorable addition to the series as a whole, but nothing too substantial. I will say, it's definitely worth it to read for the story from Holo's perspective.
