Lance Hunter’s undercover gig at the London Hellfire Club has gone south and it’s up to Mockingbird to rescue him, save the Queen of England, and fight off a passel of kinkily clad sadist toffs. Plus zombis! And corgis!

Ok, I'm officially sold on this series. This feels like a feminist Bond; it's funny, sexy, and really kick ass but without the yucky misogyny. In fact, Mockingbird readily plays with gender tropes without feeling forced. Ended up adding the previous issue to my pile as well because this one convinced me I need to keep following this series!
I didn't know too much about Mockingbird going into this series, and I'm liking her. Her style seems rather different from other Marvel women, and she's not so much a super hero. More like a...James Bond or something.
I'm actually going to hold off giving this a definitive review until I've read the entire first volume, because I absolutely adored issue #1 (it was hilarious and had the greatest little details to it; kind of reminded me of SEX CRIMINALS in that way) but found myself kind of baffled by issue #2. For the time being it's getting a solid "I liked it" 3 stars. I expect it'll probably go up.
From the first issue.
While #1 is mostly letting us see what Bobbi Morse is all about, and what, if any, superpowers she may have, #2 juts off in an entirely different direction and focuses on Bobbi rescuing her sometime-lover and fellow spy from...a BDSM dungeon? In the Greek system? Yeah...I'm still uncertain.
...mmmkay.
Chelsea Cain does write in a sort of afterword to #1 that this collection is, as she puts it, something of a "puzzle box" of comics, and acknowledges that one might not have a damn clue wtf they just read. For that reason, then, I'll suspend any criticism I have and let it play out as intended. The characters and artwork (and laugh out loud moments) are more than good enough to keep me interested that long.
1. Bobbi's opinion of sororities: "Ask me why I never joined a sorority. I went to college in Georgia. Still... never tempted. Why?" *lady in leather making speech with man tided to alter* "That's why. Delta Delta Delta. Kiwanis. Girl Scouts. They all lead here-- to the basement of the Hellfire Club."
2. Lance Hunter! Lance Hunter and his sass! Lance Hunter in only his boxers! Lance Hunter without a shirt on!
3. Bobbi immediately raising her hand when the lady asks for volunteers to show Mr. Hunter pain.
4. Bobbi having come to rescue Hunter but telling him not to make a scene and Hunter about to say he loves her but recovers by saying he loves her boots. Oh, these two idiots in love. I ship it so hard.
5. The fact that Bobbi and Hunter have an official rescue tally and Bobbi is clearly winning.
6. Bobbi kicking ass while Hunter watches changed up. "That was emasculating." "Says the guy wearing the collar."
7. Bobbi and Hunter actively working on their relationship problems. "If it were that important, SHIELD would have sent me." "Remember that conversation we had about being more supportive?" "Sorry."
8. Hunter being sassy and smart to the rescue. Unfortunately, it is a sub-rescue and doesn't get counted on the tally.
9. The fact that Hunter is the one who always does Bobbi's laundry.
10. Bobbi and Hunter hanging out in his apartment and having wine after their burritos while Hunter does her laundry. Now this is love. Also, the portrait of the Queen on Hunter's wall.
Well this has risen in the ranks of my favorite Marvel comics going, and I'm not even positive I know what's going on. This is one of those series, though, that does time jumping to tell a story correctly.
I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. It's so interesting and funny. Bobbi is amazing and it was cool seeing Lance in this too. The art is fantastic. I can't wait to read more!
