Because you demanded it! Now in her own ongoing series! Bobbi Morse is Mockingbird, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most versatile, most in-demand agent! But a string of missions gone wrong indicate that something strange is lurking within S.H.I.E.L.D.'s own medical and recovery network. How far will Mockingbird have to go in order to solve this puzzle box and get to the truth? Bestselling author Chelsea Cain teams with newcomer Kate Niemczyk.
Chelsea Cain is the New York Times bestselling author of the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell thrillers Heartsick, Sweetheart, Evil at Heart, The Night Season, Kill You Twice, and Let Me Go. Her next book One Kick (August, 2014) will be the first in her Kick Lannigan thriller series. Her book Heartsick was named one of the best 100 thrillers ever written by NPR, and Heartsick and Sweetheart were named among Stephen King's Top Ten Books of the Year. Her books have been featured on HBO's True Blood and on ABC's Castle. Cain lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.
Thanks to the super-soldier serum and the infinity formula flowing through Bobbi Morse's veins, she has to go to the superhero doctor a lot.
Mockingbird #1 is the final straw that's convinced me that the person I've been trusting to give me comic book recommendations doesn't know me at all. This recommender has told me not to read one of my favorite current titles while raving about Mockingbird, which I did not enjoy. Quinoa jokes just aren't getting the job done here. Anyway Mockingbird #1 is peculiar, but not in a fun fresh way. It's peculiar in the what are you talking about and do you actually think this is funny sort of way. I didn't smile or laugh when reading this...I didn't even smirk.
In the end Mockingbird #1 has let me know I need to find someone new to give me ongoing Marvel comic recommendations. My soon to be ex-recommendation person was just causing me to waste my money.
Okay, based on the first issue, this may become an awesome series. Great writing, Hawkeye-ish slice-of-life vibe, hilarious jokes, nice-looking art. Check it out!
This was a really impressive first issue. Cain is continuing some of Mockingbird's problems from back in her time on the New Avengers, and injecting some great humor along the way. It's not always easy to do a solo book for someone who has mostly been on teams, but this did it. Cain hit all the right notes.
My only complaint is pure personal preference. I really liked Hawkeye and Mockingbird as a couple, and I wish they'd get back together.
This was a great start to what I hope will be a long run on the book.
A fun introduction to this series with just enough mystery to keep you curious. Keep an eye on the backgrounds as plenty of superheroes make humorous cameos!
So Bobbie Morse is kicking down doors. Why? We don't really know so they rewind things for us. Seems she's going to the doctor every week after being injected with some drug to keep her alive. The side effects of this drug aren't pretty and she's starting to have some pesky little symptoms. That's pretty much all I got from this. I like the art and Bobbie is one of my favorite S.H.IE.L.D. agents so I'm hoping the next issue has more to offer.
I don't normally read comic books and only did so for a reading challenge. This one was recommended by others who don't normally read comic books and they were right - it actually was pretty good. I found myself laughing through a good portion of the stories and didn't have to force myself to finish the book.
The limp-dicks who bullied her off twitter can go and suck it. She's better than them.
And hopefully this fine writer shakes Marvel off like crap from her boots...and when she does I'll follow her to her new publisher because she's better than Marvel.
1. This is a comic book series dedicated to Bobbi Morse aka Agent 19 aka Mockingbird aka our lord and savior. If you need any more reason, go watch Agents of Shield and fall in love with Bobbi's character.
2. Written by a female writer, drawn by a female artist, colored by a female colorist... By talented women about a kickass character for women. This is what the industry needs!
3. It is funny as hell. Evidence to support this fact? Bobbi's narrative voice. "I'm a good person. I eat pretty well. I work out. I go to bookstores. I save people. For a living. I have better things to do than get hauled in for a medical checkup every week. Have I complained the last few months? Constantly. Was I a good patient? No. What can I say? When your primary care provider is a shadowy government agency, you have to be your own medical advocate."
4. SHIELD medical clinics. Just let that sink in. A place where you'll find Howard the Duck reading the newspaper and Tony Stark flipping through a pamphlet on gonorrhea in the waiting room. Also, crappy pop music playing in the background.
5. The premise itself. Bobbi Morse injected with super solider serum and infinity formula and having to go get checkups constantly? Yes, please! Also, the medical forms are hilarious.
6. Bobbi's sass. Also her intelligence. Just Bobbi in general.
7. Black Widow cameo! Natasha complimenting Bobbi's boots. I wonder if they had time to talk about all the annoying things Clint does...
8. Constant Tahiti references. This isn't suspicious at all... Not like Coulson went to Tahiti to recover or anything...
9. The ending! A total cliffhanger and prove that Bobbi Morse is as brilliant as she is badass.
10. The art is really beautiful. It fits the fun zany tone of the writing, and I love it so much. Mockingbird is now one of my favorite comic book series.
Being a huge fan of Chelsea Cain's "Heartsick" series, I was confused and perplexed yet incredibly excited to see her venture into the comic book realm. I'll openly admit that I haven't read much of Mockingbird beyond her appearances in Hawkeye serializations and Agents of SHIELD, but Cain has managed to put a new, intriguing twist on an old-age character (plus a much better fashion upgrade.)
The overall plot is nothing significantly groundbreaking, but it's given a fresh perspective of what has otherwise been a fairly mediocre character. Cain's storytelling is fresh, perfectly balancing a light-hearted nature with serious issues (Bobbi's struggle with depression and the futility of controlling her life) to offer young comic book readers a fun read.
There's laughs, there's corgis, there's speedos, and there's bdsm clubs.
Anyone that was impressed by the New 52 Catwoman's blatantly owning her sexuality will find that Mockingbird does just that in a more muted, less scandalous manner. I look forward to seeing what all Cain has to offer in this new format.
The positive buzz about this book is right on. Chelsea Cain writes Bobbi Morse with the sharpest of wit and a charming anti-heroine drawl that makes you fall in love with the character instantly.
Perhaps the best part is that this book is literally laugh-out-loud funny. One of the early panels shows the S.H.I.E.L.D medical offices waiting room and a nervous looking Tony Stark reading a pamphlet entitled, "Gonorrhea? Don't Panic!" and it couldn't be more perfect.
I picked up the whole 8 issue run of Mockingbird after hearing that writer Chelsea Cain had been run off of Twitter by misogynist haters over the cover of issue #8, just to support, and it turns out that it's a really great read.
THIS WAS SO GREAT!!! This is the first time I've ever read anything where Mockingbird is the main character, so I wasn't sure how I'd go but I loved EVERYTHING about it! The story and art were both so much fun. I can not wait to read more in the series!!
This issue had me laughing out loud so much, I knew this series was going to be in my revolving comic series subscription. Clever writing, and fantastic graphics. Highly recommend it!
Very confusing, however the explaination at the end helped. I like her attitude, and her socks. Guess I'll keep reading, I think it's just a 5 part series?
