Twenty six years ago I moved to Southwest Kansas and like all small communities and towns, people love to tell of the history surrounding the area. I was told many times about”The School Bus Tragedy Of 1931”, which occurred over the state line, between Holly and Towner, Colorado. If you’ve never lived on the prairie and witnessed a beautiful morning before everything changes in the blink of an eye, it’s really hard to phantom. I’ve lived through three blizzards, which I would never of believed, if I hadn’t seen with my own eyes. The true account told in this book was so heartfelt. The tragedy and sacrifice of Carl Miller, his family, and these brave children will forever be remembered and honored.
I have no idea where I picked up this book. I was looking for a quick read in my library, and there it was. This copy I have says it is a sample copy, which I have never seen in a book before. I am just now looking closely enough to see that this author dedicated the book to her two children, one of which is Louis Miller Jr. Pearson must have married Carl's son, Louis. That is what I figured out, which may not be correct. I have never heard of this tragedy, it is quite heartbreaking. There are many questions after the fact, which always seem clearer after a tragedy. I think of Carl, hopefully, just staying in the bus and waiting. But he knew he was near the school and to a house, I am sure he thought he would get there. Who is to say we would not have taken that as a possibility, never realizing the snow blindness would be his death? I would like to know the rest of the history of the children and what they did with their life that was spared. Ms. Pearson's account of this was not well written, I had no idea what the book was about and the more I read the more I looked for the book's purpose. There was no hint from the beginning of the book that it was about a historical tragedy.
A true story of a 1931 blizzard in Colorado that I never heard of. The build of the family makes you closer to them, but the desire for more about the blizzard aftermath remains.
Tugs at the heart and makes you see how much has changed in the world - wanting them to just pick up the call phone everyone has today and call for help. Give pause if that would be a choice when weather hits like that, would modern times change the out come or would be find ourselves at just as much of a loss.
Nice little easy read about weather history in Colorado.
Growing up in SE CO, I heard the story of the Towner school bus tragedy more than once. Less than half of the book is actually about the blizzard. Also, the author really needs an editor - lots of missing commas, many inappropriate apostrophes, and needlessly capitalized words.
