Sadly this final film by the brilliant German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder was an embarrassing misadventure and a major disappointment for his many admirers.
A total fiasco and even worse, so utterly boring! Perhaps the only redeeming feature was Brad Davis tarting himself around in his cute little French sailor's outfit with fetching low cut singlet but even that lost its homoerotic appeal pretty quickly.
However this German publication (in English) is a very handsome book containing the complete screenplay of Fassbinder's adaptation of the famous Jean Genet novel (screenplay by Fassbinder and Burkhard Driest) with added introductory notes.
The main scope of the book is its comprehensive selection of still shots by on-set photographer Roger Fritz - 120 half page photos (in dazzling color) with, in juxtaposition with the stills, a record of the actual dialogue of the completed film.
Fassbinder died in June 1982, a few months after he completed filming and prior to its premiere in Paris. A terrible loss to world cinema, and no doubt after this misfire had been discarded with, he would have returned to the forefront of outstanding film expression.
This beautiful tribute to Fassbinder was edited by Dieter Schidor, the film's producer.
With commemorative notes on the director by critics Vincent Canby, Derek Malcolm, Andrew Sarris and RWF 'mentor' the great Douglas Sirk.
The film may have been a stinker but the photos in this book are sensational!
The memorable cover illustration is by Andy Warhol.
