The Charcoal House: a completely gripping crime suspense

Rate this book
In a house filled with darkness, a woman battles to find her way out . . .

After a seemingly perfect start to their relationship, Emma marries Simon. But as soon as they return from the honeymoon, Simon changes. He forbids Emma from seeing her friends and parents. He controls their finances. And through a series of cruel, unexplained incidents, he persuades her that she’s losing her mind.

With Emma’s spirit battered and her passion for painting destroyed after a few months of marriage, she finally admits to herself that she’s afraid of her husband. The only piece she manages to complete is of a depressing charcoal house, a representation of her tortured life. Then Emma receives a cryptic message from a stranger—and shocking revelations begin to emerge one by one.

When the police become involved, events spiral out of control, and Emma’s loved ones do all they can to help her escape the monster’s clutches—but is it already too late to save her?

There's something about author Gillian Jackson.

Even though I am very, very over domestic abuse thrillers with weak female protagonists and controlling spouses, this talented author made it impossible to push the stop button on my phone.

I listened to the audiobook read by Helen Day, who did an outstanding job with the narration.

I am a huge Gillian Jackson fan and look forward to listening to her future titles.

The Charcoal House (2023)

This is my review of The Charcoal House.

In this novel we follow the story of a not-so-perfect marriage…

After a perfect start to their relationship, Emma marries Simon, But, as soon as they returned from their honeymoon, Simon changed and was in full control of her life. She now was not allowed to see her friends and parents. Simon looked after all the money, and Emma’s salary as a receptionist for a local dentist, was directly deposited into his account. Simon was employed as a claims manager for a large insurance company.

During this time, Emma, a talented artist who had a passion for painting, sketched “The Charcoal House”, a dark depressing image that held no warmth or color, which reflected her mood, dark and gloomy…no joy.

Simon had changed from the man she had fallen in love with. Emma had been brought up in a loving family and comfortable lifestyle. Now Emma is afraid of her husband.

Then Emma receives a message from a stranger—and shocking revelations begin to emerge. Emma was a victim of psychological abuse, but now was ready to fight back.

The police become involved, when Emma’s family reaches out for support to help Emma escape from this evil narcissist.

I had to keep reading this book to find out what happened and why. Not everything is as it seems…

This was a fast-paced well-written novel, the story line was intense and it held my attention from beginning to end. Even though I felt the ending was a little too predictable, it was still an enjoyable read.

Many thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.

I was a little reluctant to read this after reading a couple of not so good reviews - one of which from a friend of mine who has very similar tastes as me in books.
I am so glad I read it as I thoroughly enjoyed it from the start.
It wasn't massively exciting at first but I still enjoyed getting to know the main characters, and found myself being dragged in deep to what was going on.
As the book continued I found the pace really picked up, and I was picking it up at every opportunity to find out what happened.
So glad I read it - just proves how different we all are!
Absolutely would recommend.

A fantastic thriller book indeed!! The premise caught my attention and gave me a feeling that this would be a great book! I was so upset maybe even angry that Emma kept blaming herself for all of her husbands mistreatment of her. I don't know what it's like to be in this characters shoes, thankfully, but all the red flags that kept occurring were just BLARING! So I couldn't understand how someone would pick apart themself. Anyway, the story progressed at a good pace and kept me entertained the entire way. I was also steaming when Emma so foolishly decided to walk home after work instead of having her dad or someone safe in her life pick her up right away. So a few urked nerves but all in all this was a solid read!

This one wasn’t brilliant; the beginning and ending just didn’t feel anything special. I did enjoy the middle part and j wasn’t sure what was going to happen to Emma but felt the ending was predictable. The descriptions were good and the book read well so it doesn’t put me off trying books by this author

THE CHARCOAL HOUSE

Such a dramatic novel, this crime drama is gripping and filled with suspense.

Loaded with tension this novel keeps you hooked.

With such believable characters, it is easy to feel empathy with them.

Where it’s obvious the route this story is taking Jackson still keeps your attention throughout as it gets darker and darker.

Highly recommend. Having finished this dramatic book in a day it’s totally deserving of five stars.

Slow, repetitive & boring. Not sure but seems like the editor snoozed through this one and I can't say I blame them.

Emma had a happy life and a job she enjoyed. One rainy day at the bus stop her umbrella is blown away from her and a man stops his car to retrieve it for her. They become acquainted and soon Emma is swept off her feet by Simon the perfect man. Until they marry.
Simon changes quickly, making rules about who she can see, what she can buy, and Emma, who once had been a talented painter of colorful landscapes stops her art after realizing she can only create a charcoal house in her sketchbook which is devoid of colors. She's deeply unhappy but with no money or control over her own life, how can she escape? Then a woman comes to Emma's place of employment to share with her a dark secret that affects them both... and Simon, too.

In the beginning Emma feels absolutely trapped and hopeless. We see her compliance with Simon's rules and her resentment at feeling forced to do so in order not to trigger Simon's verbal abuse.

Once Simon's deceptiveness begins to come to light, her confusion turns to the realization that all isn't completely hopeless. But is she strong enough to follow through?

Emma is a strongly portrayed, intelligent character and it fascinating to watch her become aware of her own courage even when things appear hopeless. I enjoyed this book, the suspense builds up nicely as the story progresses and I can't wait to read more by this author! I was given an advance copy of this book in order to provide an honest review. All opinions and impressions of the book are my own.

This is the third book I have read by the author and I really enjoy how well she portrays her characters. When Emma, an only child meets Simon Beecham, she is immediately swept away by the romance of it all. The saying, Marry in haste; repent at leisure definitely comes to mind and although Emma at times does appear naive and gullible it is important to remember that she has had a rather sheltered upbringing.
As Emma’s life spirals out of control and her parents start to find out that their worst fears are in fact
a reality they concede that the only way they can help their daughter means involving the police. It was good to meet DI Samantha Freeman and DS Jenny Newcombe again who were in The Shape of Truth, another great read from Gillian Jackson. They are a great team. Simon Beecham is a villain that you will love to hate and I found myself cheering them on as they try to bring him to justice. I loved the police procedural aspect of the book. Thank you to the author and Bloodhound Books for an arc of The Charcoal House in return for an independent review.

The Charcoal House by Gillian Jackson was a gripping crime suspense from start to finish especially as this made it a great page turner. Emma and Simon seems to be a perfect couple from the very beginning. But when the door closes everything changes! Simon has to be in total control of his new wife and forbids Emma seeing her friends and family. He becomes cruel in every way and unexplained incidents, start to happen and he persuades her she is loosing her mind!
Emma has a passion and it is painting, but Simon destroys this passion after a few months of being married and she finally realises that she is afraid of her husband and has no where to turn. Until she
receives a cryptic message from a stranger—and shocking revelations begin to emerge one by one.

Will Emma escape the clutches of her husband Simon before its too late!?

This book is so good and I highly recommend it. It is a great holiday read and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

So I was eager to jump into this book and grateful to be given and ARC thanks to bloodhound books.
Having become an avid fan of Gillian Jackson once again this story didn’t disappoint.
It follows newlywed Emma’s life as she starts her new adventure with husband Simon but things quickly begin to evolve to a married life Emma had not envisaged for herself. She starts to become alienated thanks to her new husband and falls into the pit of psychological domestic violence. Now obviously there comes a twist when a visitor appears at Emma’s work with some info that changes the course of events for Emma!
Great read once again which I couldn’t put now. Excellent storyline and a must for readers of this genre.

The author takes a pinch of tropes from the psychological thriller genre, a pinch of tropes from police procedurals, gives them a quick whisk, and has created a gritty, thrilling recipe. This is a story loaded to the very limits with tension and intrigue.
In my opinion crime fiction can't get any better than this. Gillian Jackson really knows her stuff. There's no element of whodunit (so often an essential to maintain suspense!) but a very sensitive approach to whydunit. The characters are all utterly believable and one can't fail to have empathy for them.
As the story unfolds the bad guy just keeps getting darker and darker and the revelations from his past get ever more shocking. An absolute must read for crime fiction fans.

When Emma married Simon after a very brief courtship her whole life turned upside down, the man she fell in love with turned completely into an opposite person to the one he was before, to the point that she started losing touch with reality and lived only according to his rules.
In this psychological thriller we read about an abused woman by the hands of her husband, not a physical one but so badly psychologically abused that her world shrunk and at the end she almost lost her life.
As in a typical Gillian Jackson book you start reading it and can’t stop until you reach the unexpected ending, ruling for a good outcome for the main character.

My first time reading a book by Gillian Jackson and I have to say it won't be my last.
I was gripped from the first page. Simon is charismatic, charming and hides a darker side and an awful lot of secrets.
Emma an only child falls for Simon's charms but after a whirlwind romance will Emma live to regret marrying so quickly.
After the honeymoon Simon starts to change and shows a side previously hidden.
As Simon's lies unravel can Emma survive.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Emma has just married the man of her dreams. Simon is kind, respectful and supportive until they get married and then he changes. Simon becomes, controlling and abusive. Emma blames herself and thinks that she is going crazy but it's all apart of Simon's mind games. Will Emma be able to escape before it's too late? I was hooked to this page turner from beginning to end. Emma is a strong character and although I didn't like Simon he perfectly represents the domestic abuse persona. The plot is gripping and twisty. Well written and addictive.

This was a really gripping crime thriller, and I'm grateful to Bloodhound books for sending me an advanced copy to read and review.
Emma is a likeable and believable main character, and although I felt the start of the book felt a little rushed, once you get into the main body of the book it's a gripping read. The interplay between Emma and Simon is really well written, and quite chilling in places, and I enjoyed the relationship between the two police officers too.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime fiction.

Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an arc of this book.

This book promised so much at the start. The first few chapters left me on tenterhooks. At one point I declared to my husband that I was not sure I'd be able to read on. But without wanting to give too much away once the focus moved to the police investigation I felt that the atmosphere of the book completely changed. It lacked some depth for me which is a shame because of the very promising start.

A good read none the less but I do feel it could have been so much more.

I always get excited when starting a new book by Gillian Jackson. She gets you fully absorbed in the story and makes it feel so real. Good strong characters in this book, great storyline with lots of twists on the way. I love reading a dramatic book where an unhappy wife tries to escape an emotional and physically violent marriage, especially where the husband tries to make out that they are going mad. I was fully engaged the entire time, a real thrilling page turner and finished it within 2 days. This lady never fails to produce a fabulous book!!

I love a domestic psychological thriller so this grabbed my eye!
The author ticked all the boxes for how people get into these situations - with the partner being a Jekyll and Hyde of sorts. I would’ve liked more grit and emotional turmoil from Emma - simple words like ‘upset’, ‘angry’ and ‘felt crazy’ didn’t quite cut it sometimes.
The book took a BBC Line of Duty feel when police become involved and I could see this easily transferred to a TV drama series.
The twists and turns definitely kept me going as well as the different character perspectives.
Sped through this in 2 days easily.

Loved this book.

Had me completely gripped from the start, so much so that I have not had a lot of sleep over the last couple of days as I literally could not put it down.

Great characters, I will add that this is part of a series but can easily be read as a standalone and I personally loved that fact that the characters were familiar.

I cannot wait for the next installment.

Highly recommended, 5 stars from me.

Having read Gillian Jackson's previous book, I was looking forward to this coming out. It didn't disappoint. It is so well written that I found myself loathing Simon and wanting to punch his lights out and rooting for Emma, Sam and the rest of the characters. This book draws you in and is a real page turner. I couldn't put this book down.
Can't wait for the next book.

This story is paced really well and is really engaging. The husband is believably totally narcissistic and controlling, but although the wife is definitely vulnerable, she's also almost too gullible. It sometimes felt that it was a little unbelievable just how naive she is. The progression of the story was great though, and the procedural elements involving the police were really interesting.

Thank you to Bloodhound books for the ARC 😊

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this page turner of a book, in which I was captured from beginning to end.
It has a captivating and gripping well written storyline and plot. With strong characters, one particular nasty clever one, you definitely wouldn't want to meet.
There are some unexpected revelations and plenty of clever twists.
It's a book that's well worth reading.
My thanks to Bloodhound books for the advanced copy of this book. This is my honest, unbiased review
