A female who longs for independence and to get rid of the family expectations, answers an ad about a mail-order bride to a frontier town.
A man who has lived a hard life as sheriff and now only wants a quiet life on his farm.
When this two meet things starts to happen. Robberies, murders, kidnappings and through it all the sweet love story of Jack and Pru.
It is funny at times and I totally liked Jack. But Pru was another matter. She was naive, bordering on stupid. She did all manner of stupid things just because she wanted her independence and didn´t wan´t to "burden" Jack.
The story felt blockish and sometimes I wasn´t comfortable with how the dialogue was written. So even if I quit like western romances I can´t give this book more than 2 stars.

A heck of a book!
A former marshall and a heiress. She ran because she wanted freedom. He wanted a mail order bride. She comes west and refuses to be his bride but wants to reimburse him for bringing her out west. She witnessed a robbery and two men are wanting to dispose her. What happens when she falls in love with a man without a family?
I absolutely love this book. I love the antics Pru gets up to and how much Jack loves her. Even when his building gets torn down, his house gets burned and his livestock scattered. I recommend this book to everyone.

Facing marriage to a boor, Prudence Perkins decides to leave her life of luxury behind and quietly accept a mail-order marriage proposal in Paradise, Oklahoma Territory. Departing from her controlling Gram and spineless father, Pru disappears; she plans to show her family that she can survive without their money or connections.
Unfortunately, she also has a surprise for her intended; Pru doesn’t plan on marrying him either. She wants the freedom to try her wings and prove that Pru can live a full life as an independent woman. She rejects the usual woman’s desire for a man’s protection and security.
Former lawman Jack McCavett, Pru’s fiancée, just wants an average, quiet woman to help him fulfill his dream as an average man with a growing ranch. However, neither Jack nor Pru are what a person would call ‘average.’ Jack is not prepared for the aristocratic, attractive woman who fights the thieves who rob the Paradise-bound stage in which Pru is traveling.
Pru quickly proves herself to be a social agitator and suffragette; before long, she has the town in a stir. However, those stage robbers continue to threaten Pru; they promise to kill Jack and the town sheriff if she ‘describes the robbers with enough detail to create wanted posters.’
I found Pru to be somewhat over-the-top as a social reformer. She might be fun and assertive, but she was not the typical woman of the era. The story’s pacing moved the story at a fast stride; over-thinking was not the story’s goal. 3.5 stars

This was a thoroughly entertaining short, fun read.
Prudence Elizabeth Perkins (Pru) is a young, rich woman living under the strong yoke of her grandmother. Her and Pru's father, who hasn't stood up to his mother in all his life, are forcing her to get engaged to a man she doesn't love just because her grandmother thinks she's old enough to be already married. Desiring to be able, for once, to make her own choices, she refuses and her grandmother determines she's not to have one penny of her family's money if she doesn't fulfill her grandmother's wishes.
Pru resolves to find a job and fight for her independence. So how does she finally abandon "Grandma's Royal Kingdom"? She finds in the classified ads an ad from Jack McCavett (a total hottie) looking for a helpful, pleasing WIFE to spend his days with. He promises food, shelter and money for a train if needed and that's what motivates her. She doesn't want to get married, but she thinks it's a wonderful opportunity. Food, shelter and a job? So off she goes.
To not spoil the story for y'all, I'll only say that all Hell starts breaking loose even before she puts her feet where Jack lives. Things are stolen, protests are made, people get murdered, she keeps getting in trouble and through it all, there's a wonderful love story in progress. Also lots of laughs and smoldering hot moments ;)

A wealthy heiress takes a dare from her family that she can't survive without her family money. She responds to an ad to be a mail-order bride (getting money go to west) and then spurns her would-be groom. But she lands in a heap of trouble when her advocacy of women's rights rile up the townsfolk and two desperados target her, leading her ex-intended, a former sheriff, to her rescue...a reasonably entertaining western.

Enjoyed the interplay between Jack McCavett and his mail-order bride, Pru Perkins. Initially antagonistic toward each other, the feisty, 'want my own freedom and independence" Pru, and the stubborn ex-lawman, orphan McCavett, fall for each other in a series of mis-adventures and dire situations. Although I could see the eventual marriage coming, the twists and turns made a very enjoyable book.
