Supervision in the Helping Professions

The latest edition of this best selling book on supervision updates and expands the previous two editions with references to the developments and writing in the field over the last six years.

Since the publication of the previous edition, supervision has continued to spread from the professions of counselling, psychotherapy and social work, into all medical professions and more recently into education, coaching, mentoring and human resources management. Ένα βιβλίο μοναδικό στο είδος του στην ελληνική γλώσσα (από μετάφραση βεβαίως) και αρκετά χρήσιμο, όμως και με αρκετά προβλήματα και αστοχίες. Σίγουρα έχει γίνει πολλή δουλειά ετοιμασίας και σύνταξης από δύο φανερά έμπειρους συγγραφείς. Από τα καλά του βιβλίου και η κάλυψη πολλών διαφορετικών θεμάτων σχετικών με την εποπτεία. Εξαιρετική και η εκτεταμένη βιβλίογραφία!

Όμως... υπάρχουν αστοχίες. Και μεταφραστικές (όπως το ανεκδιήγητο "εμψύχωση" ως απόδοση του "coaching", ακόμα να συνέλθω από το χαστούκι!) και εννοιολογικές, όπως η (σοβαρή κατ' εμέ) σύγχυση του στρες με το άγχος στο 3ο κεφάλαιο, όπου δύο αυτοί όροι χρησιμοποιούνται ως ισοδύναμοι και με κάνουν να αμεφισβητώ έντονα, μετά λύπης μου, την επάρκεια γνώσεων αυτού που συνέταξε το συγκεκριμένο κείμενο. Σε ένα πόνημα μάλιστα με φανερές ακαδημαϊκές και επιστημονικές διαστάσεις, απλά ανεπίτρεπτο.

Σημαντικότατο πρόβλημα του βιβλίου που θεωρώ ότι το κάνει δύσχρηστο, παρά τις αρκετές καλές και χρήσιμες πληροφορίες, είναι η τακτική σύγχυση θεμάτων και πρακτικών εποπτείας σε εργαζόμενους επιχειρήσεων, εργαζόμενους σε δομές συμβουλευτικής και ψυχικής υγείας και ανεξάρτητους ειδικούς συμβούλους και θεραπευτές. Προσπαθώντας να τους καλύψει όλους, το κάνει με έναν άκομψο και δυσλειτουργικό τρόπο που οδηγεί δυστυχώς σε λάθη, λόγω συμβουλών που είτε δεν έχουν νόημα κατά περίπτωση, είτε απλά δεν μπορούν να εφαρμοστούν πρακτικά! Ενδεικτικό μάλιστα είναι ότι ως βασικοί στόχοι της εποπτείας (πίνακας στη σελίδα 104) αφορούν σαφέστατα στην εποπτεία εργαζόμενων σε μία εταιρεία ή οργανισμό. Ενδεικτικό ότι σε άλλα σημεία δίδεται έμφαση σε θέματα καθαρά ψυχοθεραπείας (μεταβίβαση, αντιμεταβίβαση, φορτίο από το ασυνείδητο, κ.λπ.) χωρίς να διευκρινίζεται πάντα ότι αναφέρεται σε καταστάσεις και σχέσεις ψυχοθεραπείας. Και άλλα παρόμοια...

Ένα ακόμα πρόβλημα του βιβλίου είναι η υπερανάλυση της δομικής σύστασης διαδικασιών και πρακτικών, με ένα τρόπο περισσότερο ακαδημαϊκό και λιγότερο ουσιαστικό. Και σε συνδυασμό με αρκετά άλλα στοιχεία, έμμεσα ή άμεσα, μου δίνει την εντύπωση ότι το βιβλίο είναι περισσότερο προσανατολισμένο στη διδασκαλία της εποπτείας, το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο και το πώς γίνεται αυτή και πολύ λιγότερο στο να βοηθήσει πρακτικά τους επόπτες να κάνουν τη δουλειά τους. Βέβαια το αναφέρει ξεκάθαρα και στο οπισθόφυλλο, ότι αυτό το βιβλίο "αποτελεί βασικό εγχειρίδιο για την εκπαίδευση εποπτών" και ήταν δικό μου λάθος που δεν το πρόσεξα εξαρχής. Οπότε αυτό που εγώ θεωρώ πρόβλημα, μπορεί να είναι θεμιτό για όσους θέλουν να εκπαιδεύουν επόπτες (που φαντάζομαι δεν είναι περισσότεροι από μερικές δεκάδες άνθρωποι σε όλη την Ελλάδα).

Ως coach και επόπτης άλλων coaches (και όχι "εμψυχωτών") κρατάω κάποια ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία από το βιβλίο και τη βιβλιογραφία και το βάζω στην άκρη όπου μάλλον θα παραμείνει εσαεί...

It's not often I read a textbook cover to cover but it felt as though every chapter had something valuable to share. I found this book so thought provoking. I loved the way it highlights the need to consider wider contexts when thinking about supervision. I wasn't expecting to be considering the impact of climate change in a textbook about supervision but it made total sense and really opened my mind. This was the perfect companion to my supervision training and although it took me a long time to get through it, it was definitely worth reading. I found it valuable as a trainee supervisor but also wish I could have read it when I first started supervision as a supervisee as I think I could have gotten more out of supervision if I had.

Has dated quite a bit. Some moving anecdotes within, and some generally supportive structures for professionally developing social work and supervision practice.

Neo-liberal movement away from a profession framing of 'the client' towards 'the customer' seems to have diminished psychotherapeutic aspects of social work, but that may just be my stage of career (early), and the restructuring turmoil of my organisation.

Just completed my EWU EDUC 551 Supervision of Instruction course. I appreciated this book as the supervisory models were not only in education but the business and medical fields as well. My hope is to get my educational setting out of crisis mode and into a more fruitful collaborative growth model.
