Gwen Branson has a problem. It's not that she's spent the last four years of her life in a mental institute, or that her father is dead and her mother's driving her crazy. Her problem is that she's seen a werewolf and no one believes her. At least...no one human. Eben Lowell has a problem of his own. As an Alpha Were, he must preserve his pack's safety and secrecy. Human witnesses are destroyed. Gwen Branson, however, is a problem not so easily solved. Because Gwen is more than just a human she's his mate.
2.5 🌟 Plain Jane h. Tiny everywhere, nothing to look at..depressed.
“ she could’ve been pretty if she gained weight”🙄
But appearances doesnt matter in a fated mate story. The Universe chose them.
Plain Jane human + Gorgeous alpha wolf.
The tstl h just got on my friggin nerves. So DNF.🙄
What I liked: This felt like a real werewolf story. They were violent, and some ate people. 😦 Book was scary and horrifying and I ate it all up because this is an unusual take on the shifter genre. These werewolves are real monsters and are not were-puppies. - the H is a true alpha, and the scariest of them all. Loved his possessiveness towards the h.
What I disliked:
- barely any world building.
- even though I liked the werewolves, not much happened. It was boring.
- The h is a timid wimp, except when she decides to stand up for herself…then she’s just a tstl female who puts herself and other people in danger.
- I didn’t feel the MCs connection, and even though he knew they were mates, he didn’t act like he was attracted to his plain Jane mate. They just had violent sex and barely spent any time together. 🤷🏻♀️
I am rating this based on the romance. I did enjoy the authors writing.
Average overall. It had some bits that I liked, for example, the werewolves were of the scary bipedal monster type instead of pretty wolves. But there were some problems. The romance seemed rushed and inconsistent. Plus he treated her like shit and basically sexually assaulted her and she woke up wanting more sex. Yeah, no. There were other things but I'm tired of thumb typing and you get the gist.
Gwen was put in a mental institution at 18 by her mother, after she said a werewolf was responsible for the accident that killed her father. Four years later, she's removed from the institution by Eben, an alpha werewolf who recognizes her as his mate. Gwen wakes up to find herself in a big isolated house with Eben, Eben's brother Christian, and Eben's father Connor. They all treat her pretty well and she eventually recovers and starts finding out about them.
I really liked Gwen's relationship with Connor. These books usually gloss over any relationship not involving the hero and heroine, but Connor was really paternal with her and it was sweet to watch them get closer. I did think that she recovered from her 4 years in the mental institution a little too fast, but it was a short book so I guess that was inevitable. The sex scenes also weren't too bad--usually, with this kind of book, they're hideously graphic, but I found them more or less readable and didn't skim much. This was definitely one of the better paranormals I've read in a while.
One big complaint is how, as usual, the heroine is just too impulsive (I'll be nice and not say dumb) to listen to what her mate tells her to do. I don't care that she didn't eat the sandwich he ordered for her, although I find that kind of scene really annoying and overused at this point. But I mean, she's told again and again not to go outside, then does it anyway. And why didn't they just tell her that they had some enemies and that she wouldn't be safe? They didn't have to give her the details. Then the hero is upset with her for her dishonest and breaking his trust, when he hasn't told her anything about the reality of her situation. OK I'm just getting myself worked up for nothing now, it was a good book all in all.
Thanks Fre06 for the recommendation. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and its very alpha hero. From start to finish it's solid. I enjoyed the characters and the plot was engaging.
When I first read this book it was a 5 star read. Upon rereading it it's now a 4 star read because the heroine does 2 things stupid when her life was in danger and she knew her life was in danger.
Too bad this author is no longer writing. I got hooked on her storytelling.
A very dull and predictable story that has too many fillers. Characters are very stereotypical with very little development. And even though it is a erotic/romantic story, there is barely any romance it. The sex scenes is more like rape than mating. There is little annoying details that annoys readers (unless they are unobservant and unimaginative). A total disappointment as a whole.
The whole story could have been could have been condensed to 20 pages with all its fillers. Though a few fillers are Gwen, our protagonist, quaint encounters with charming Connor, its not what the story is about, and most of the time these encounters offers nothing to the romantic relationship. Then most of the fillers are dull run over of the events of the day, usually bathing, drawing, sleeping, chatting, waiting and the like. So very bloated.
Then there are the characters. They are incredibly one dimensional. Each interactions show the characters in the same light. Connor is always patriarchal and understanding, Christian is disgustingly cheerful and carefree, and Eben silent, unemotional and secretive and Gwen, just plain passive with bouts of out of character impulsiveness which is not warranted in the situation they occur. Other characters minor and very minor are similarly one dimensional. You don't really have to use your metal energy to understand them.
The romantic element is between Gwen and Eben but they rarely interact with each other and their interactions are rarely romantic or affectionate. If romantic/affectionate encounters do happen (which seems to be mainly when Eben wants sex), it feels abrupt and unreal. The whole romance thing is unreal. When they do have sex, the situation is more like rape than amorous which the author attempts to make so by forcing romantic/lustful emotions on the character when they should not. The author must have very distorted view of love, romance and sex. I almost want to give advice: see a psychiatrist.
And the most annoying, the little details. The bad were say they are nothing more that "beast" when the acts they describe as beastly (murder, rape, terrorism, etc.) are very human. Gwen has a gift of photographic memory but is not recognized as such by the other characters, the author must been ignorant about such talents. There is also the missing consequences of her being kidnapped from the institute. No news, no investigation, no nothing. It's as if it didn't happen.
The whole book does not really hold well together. It lacks skill and finesse. Its as if we read directly from a draft.
Good read. This is a shifter story where the weres are not just humans in fuzzy coats.
The hero's brother gets picked up and committed when he gets caught starting a change. When the tranqs finally wear off he calls home and they send his brother to get him out - only he has discovered that one of the female inmates was incarcerated for claiming to have seen a werewolf. They stop on the way out and she is tranq'ed to the gills - but the brother recognizes her as his mate so they bring her unconscious body along.
The heroine wakes up in a strange bed and a strange house which she discovers is somewhere in the far north of Canada. The inhabitants are brothers - appealing Christian, big, burly, dominant Eban - and charming Connor, their father. They eventually manage to reassure her and she stays on. The heroine is small and thin but as she recovers from the drugs that the asylum had used on her daily she recovers her health and spirit. This is a good thing - because she's in for a lot of shocks in the remainder of the book... Not to mention the marathon sex!
An excellent first novel. Hopefully there will be a sequel, there's still Christian to get mated.
This is my first foray with M.A. Everaux. I doubt it will be my last. This is a werewolf story with heart and meat. I really liked the characters, even though I wanted to smack Gwen in the head a few times. No one could be so naive.
A fellow reader commented that she was weak. I disagree, I found her to be naive and sheltered. And due to the circumstances she was raised, he actions and reactions were very appropriate.
I adored Eben. He is how I like my alpha males to be written. I recommend for anyone else to read. It is not a disappointing read at all.
3.5 stars I really enjoyed this book. The Romance was just as I like it (with a very possessive Hero). The only reason this is 3.5 stars and not more is as the h was traumatized because of an incident with a werewolf (she was in a mental institution due to this) but the acceptance of being a mate of a Werewolf was not difficult enough. She tried to run away only once but I would have expected more struggle from her side. Also, the ending was a bit abrupt.
Overall I enjoyed this book and Thanks Fre06 for your recommendation!
It took only a moment for Gwen Branson’s life to change forever. Committed by her mother to a mental institution after her failed suicide attempt, Gwen understands that people believe it was her father’s tragic death in the car accident that drove her to slit her wrists, but only she knows the truth. It was the terrorizing sight that she witnessed of a werewolf devouring his human prey by the roadside that triggered her botched attempt. Content with her sedative life in the sanatorium of sleeping and drawing pictures of the creature that haunts her nightmares Gwen is unaware that one of her sketches has drawn the attention of the hospitals newest patient, a man who also has an affinity for the full moon.
Eben Lowell’s life was changed forever with only a moment’s glance. Being sent to spring a sibling from a mental hospital would have been a bizarre event in any normal family, but after years of bailing his brother out of numerous weird situations Eben anticipated being in and out of Ohio and back in Canada in a flash. The last thing he expected to be confronted with was a drawing of a “Were”, done by a female patient, that was just to close to reality to be ignored. She was a problem that would have to be dealt with quickly, ruthlessly and in person. Little did he know that the “problem” was about to rock his world and big bad alpha Werewolf that he is was about to be brought to heel.
I just love this time of year. The hot days of summer are over, the leaves are turning all different shades of vibrant colors and Halloween is just around the corner. To get myself in the holiday mood I love to immerse myself in one of my favorite addictions… reading Werewolf romances. A strong sexy alpha hero, a feisty witty heroine and action that hardly ever stop is exactly what I crave and let me tell you NORTH WOLF delivered the goodies and more. M.A. Everaux has composed a story with well-rounded characters, a plot that is extremely tight and love scenes that are as hot and steamy as a car window at Lovers Lane on a Saturday night. I could barely put this one down and I am happy to admit that I have already read it again a few times over. So go sneak a hand full of candy corn from the kitchen, snuggle up with NORTH WOLF and enjoy a little bit of “me time” before life gets to crazy. You deserve it, trust me we all do, lol!!!
Gwen has a bit of a problem. The next Alfa Wolf of a clan in far northern Canada is lusting after her. Actually, she has lots and lots of problems. The first is she is in a mental institution because she saw a werewolf and nobody would believe her. Her mother had her committed and wants her to stay committed so she doesn’t offend any of her friends. She has been kidnapped (sort of) from the institution and now, she finds herself living with one of the most demanding werewolves around!
This story is not going to be for every erotica lover. Eben is a very strong and strong willed character and can be downright annoyingly bossy. He will not take no for an answer. In one scene there is a forced seduction.
On the other hand Gwen can be downright annoying too and of course will not listen to anyone even if it is for her own good. The fact that I still loved this book will be obvious to anyone who dares purchase it! They are both a product of their upbringings. Ebon fought his whole life for everything (he was an orphan in Turkey) Gwen’s years were not pretty.
The sex while sometimes using “forced seduction” scenarios , it is still a sexy read and we do eventually get a HEA with both characters learning to give a little.
Eben was a refreshing Alpha hero. He never came off as a jerk to me. Yes, he was firm and never back down and that's a sign of a true Alpha wolf. This was an interesting take on finding one's mate in a loony bin. I like the relationship Gwen developed with Christian. Gwen did one bonehead move but I guess we needed the conflict. The sex was hot, really hot!! The only thing I'm left wanting to know is why Theron kept visiting Gwen in his wolf form. He wasn't trying to kill her then, so why the visits?
i really didn't like this book and not because it was badly written or anything like that, it was just that it made me feel sick. I don't mind voilence but when a person takes away another person's ability to make descisions over their own life and then ad rapelike sex to it all and still make it out like the girl likes it while she is crying I just don't want to be a part of it...sorry.
Heroine is TSTL and constantly put herself in danger. There was barely any romance, no relationship building. Hero is possessive but didn’t really work on having a relationship with the heroine.
3.5 stars because of Gwen and the ending that was absolutely lacking, especially for people like me who crave that HEA factor and the whole epilogue with that sugar and cupcake sweetness.
I will however say that for the length of the book, there was a good plot, tons of great, hot, borderline animal, sweaty sex that I am sure you would all enjoy a well as a great almost OTT alpha (and by almost I mean because it's like OTT with an exception to this one scene that wouldn't make any sense to OTT Alphas in other books)
This is very safe, no other woman/ex drama for both sides, although we do get an understanding that Eben was a manwhore before he sniffed out Gwen and decided she was his mate, even through her heavily drug induced scent in the mental institution. I also kind of really liked this element in the book because it brought some originality to the whole mate and werewolves topic that we all know so well.
Despite wanting to slap Eben a couple times, I really did like his character because he stayed the same from beginning to end, which is a shocker because sometimes in werewolf books, the main heroes become so soft after meeting their mate that it's almost too cheesy to read. Eben however stayed the same brooding, glaring, angry all the time, yet somehow still handsome as Gwen described him. So I was really satisfied with how he turned out to be.
Gwen on the other hand....I honestly won't say anything because I found her lacking in every sense of the word. her character didn't make sense, especially after they brought her back from the hospital, her reaction to their lifestyle, them in general, and why she chose to keep certain things to herself when she clearly shouldn't have.
I kept switching from this
to this
If you're willing to sacrifice Gwen's character and the lacking ending, I am sure you will like this book.
The story lacks depth and the characters are on the flat side, but it managed to keep my interest for the most part. I had to skim through one or two porny sex scenes. It was strange that the sex scenes began steamy and not crude, then switched to crude, only to end up being steamy but subdued.
🔥 The sex scene where the h loses her virginity, is my favorite.
The characters are given descriptions at the start, but little to nothing after that. There weren't enough sensory descriptions to help me envision the story.
The three men in the Were family were quite likable, even if they felt underdeveloped. However, I wasn't a fan of the heroine. The author made her act foolishly to cause the exciting conclusion, which is something that happens too often in romance books.
The romance is instant for the Were, but the h takes her time developing feelings. Besides having sex, they spend little meaningful time together, which makes their love less believable. The h has to be pushed towards the H, dragging her feet for the majority of the story. Her actions, aside from enjoying sex, made her whispered I-love-you at 99% feel shallow.
It's interesting that "wolf" is used in the book title, when there are no wolves at all. They're more like dangerous apex predators, some of which develop a taste for human flesh. The fight scenes are brutal and contain blood & gore.
Were Description:He certainly hadn't looked like a regular wolf, or at least, not like any wolf she'd seen. Instead, he was more of a man-wolf, as if someone had taken prime examples of both species, thrown them into a bottle and mixed them up, the end result being a weird mutation of the two―a great, hulking brute, armed with sharp claws and obvious intelligence, with the ability to stand on its hind legs but run faster than a rabbit on all four.

MCs: Gwen (human) and Eben (Were)
Past Event: A Were dragging a dead female across the road, caused Gwen and her father to crash into a tree, killing him instantly. She watched the Were rip apart and eat the dead body. She was so traumatized, she tried to kill herself and was put in a mental institute for four years and kept drugged up. She's not close to her self-absorbed mother, and has no one else.
Opening Scene: Gwen (22) is at the institute in Iowa, where Christian, a Werewolf, sees her drawings of the creature that killed her father. Christian had been locked up for almost shifting during a full moon, and his erratic behavior got him committed. He calls his adopted brother, Eben, for help. When Eben arrives, he wants to see who created the drawings that could reveal their secret to humans. Upon finding Gwen asleep in her bed, he realizes she's his mate. He and Christian escape the institute, taking Gwen with them to Northern Canada.
Connor (60+) is the Lead Alpha who adopted Eben and Connor, and now is retiring b/c he's old & tired. He's giving his position to Eben, the strongest and fiercest Were. He's a well known artist who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking and baking. Plus, he does the doctoring when needed. His beloved wife died many years ago at the hands of his enemies.
Eben (35) was discovered living on the streets of a Turkish city when he was just 15. Abandoned by his mother, he's never had a woman's love. Large and muscular, he's often more beast than man and can be quite dangerous when provoked. He crafts swords for collectors and museums for a living.
Christian (30) is blond, beautiful and carefree. Connor found him when he was 10, and took him away from his abusive parents. No idea what he does or how he spends his days. Despite being told that he's popular with the ladies, there's never any females around. He and Gwen act like siblings by goofing around and teasing each other.
🤗 A favorite scene is when Christian and Gwen ate a pan of brownies in the kitchen, and then were scolded by Connor like naughty children.
★ Connor and Christian added warmth and humor to the story. Eben was a great alpha-male who was protective, possessive and super sexy. 😍
There's little realism. You'd think that a big hurdle would be Gwen accepting the men who're like the monster who was the cause of her father's death. But no, after a month of loving care, she quickly accepts that Werewolves are real and she's now part of their family.
After four years of wasting away, sleeping while drugged, she recovers quickly and soon is helping out around the farm, cleaning and caring for the horses.
▪️ Gwen draws in Connor's studio. ▪️ Connor paints her portrait. ▪️ Gwen and Eben have a lot of sex. ▪️ Gwen and Eben have trouble communicating.
Eben has to convince Gwen that she's his mate and he's loved her from the start. While she's immature and naive, she shows a bit of independence and stubbornness at times. It was tiring reading her negative thoughts and reluctance at being with him. She discovers . She's pushed into that as well.
Theron is the villain of the story. He wants to be Lead Alpha and Eben expects to be challenged by him.
Gwen is told to stay inside while the men are away, but she foolishly goes outside after hearing a noise. There, she is attacked, nearly raped and kidnapped. She learns that Theron is behind it, but refuses to share what she knows because she doesn't want Theron's death on her conscience. Unsurprisingly, her refusal to talk ends up being a big mistake.
Gwen, having never leaned to drive, decides to run away in a car, b/c Eben won't stop bugging her about what she knows. To no surprise, she crashes the car and two of Theron's supporters kidnap her, and once again she's attacked and nearly raped. Eben arrives, kills them both and rescues her. So now she has two deaths on her hands, instead of the one she was worried about. 🙄
The book ends with Eben and Theron fighting in a challenge. It was learned that not only was Theron the Were that . In a close fight where Eben is seriously injured, Eben proves how good he is at killing.
The abrupt ending has Gwen and Eben having sex while he's in his Were form. An epilogue would have been appreciated. 😬
Gwen Branson has a problem. It's not that she's spent the last four years of her life in a mental institute, or that her father is dead and her mother's driving her crazy. Her problem is that she's seen a werewolf and no one believes her. At least...no one human.
Gwen
Eben Lowell has a problem of his own. As an Alpha Were, he must preserve his pack's safety and secrecy.
Eben
Human witnesses are destroyed. Gwen Branson, however, is a problem not so easily solved. Because Gwen is more than just a human she's his mate.
I liked this book. I was frustrated by the heroine. They make comments on how she has grown as a person from her arrival but in the end she never stands her own against her "Mate". They just have sex and all the problems are resolved. If they really did break her out of a mental institution then once she phoned home the police might have been looking for her but nothing ever comes of the mention of her relationship with her mom.
Gwen was committed into a mental institute by her mom for a suicide attempt. But she also saw a werewolf eating a human on the night she and her father was in a car accident (her father died). No one believed her though.
Eben came to the mental institute to rescue Christian, his brother. Christian showed Eben a drawing of a werewolf that Gwen drew. Once Eben saw Gwen, he knew she was his mate. They then stole Gwen away.
I get that Eben was trying to give her some space in the beginning before going full-on mate-mode, but he's not possessive enough for me. He seems quite chill, all things considering. He even let his artist father paint Gwen nude. Sure, the dad is an artist and all, but still a bit weird don't you think.
The werewolf that Gwen saw that night got wind of Gwen and wanted to come after her and Eben. Eben defeated the enemy, Gwen discovered she's pregnant, they got married.
It's a pretty mediocre book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a really great book. Pretty solid plot, nice smut, and some actual characterization.
For people who are only looking for criticism, here are the reasons why it wasn't 5 stars:
1. The use of the word 'cream' to describe Gwen's.... 'fluids' 2. The last page of the book contained a particular sex act that I was hoping would not be in the novel 3. I wish Gwen's reaction to Eben was slightly more positive before the relationship progressed in specific ways. I'm not going to spoil anything, but she was still very wary of him when certain aspects of their living situation changed and it made me uncomfortable until she changed her views.
All in all it was great, but those couple things kind of stuck with me which keeps me from giving it the full 5 stars.
it wasnt such a hit for me I guess. Eben and Gwen were apart for most of the time. She was mostly with Conor and Christian ( Eben's father and brother), the time when they were together, they were having sex. :(
there was very little romance to the story, and pretty much because Eben was busy with something else. There wasnt even an Epilogue!!!! It just ended with them still having sex!!! (that i cannot feel the romantic side off).
Eh. Wasn't as terrible as many in the genre, and had some promise, sure – but I wasn't convinced. A bit (read: very) rapey. No particular liking towards any of the characters.
