Hot & Heavy is the fifth book in Sandra Hill’s Viking II series, which up to this point, has been following the time-traveling exploits of the Ericsson/Magnusson clan of Norse men and women. In the previous four books, all the members of this family traveled forward in time from 11th century Norway to the present day, with the exception of Magnus’ (The Very Virile Viking) oldest daughter, Madrene. She was unintentionally left behind and has been doing her best to care for the family’s holdings in the thirteen years since her father and most of her other family members disappeared and were presumed dead. When she is catapulted forward in time as well, she meets and falls for Ian, a Navy SEALs commander, who was introduced in the previous book, Wet & Wild. He’s the brother of Allison, the heroine of that book, and he has also worked with Madrene’s brother, Torolf, who is a SEAL, too. Overall, Hot & Heavy was a cute addition to the series that was mostly enjoyable for me. However, despite it appearing to be the most well-liked book of series (according to GoodReads ratings), I didn’t like it quite as well as Wet & Wild. IMHO, it had some weakness, which I’ll discuss shortly.

Madrene married at the age of eighteen to a man who never really appreciated her and ended up setting her aside (the equivalent of divorce) when she produced no offspring for him. Then all of her family, with the exception of her oldest brother, Ragnor, disappeared. Several years later, Ragnor also went a-Viking and never returned, leaving her alone. Despite her fierce determination to lead her men in battle and retain the family’s holding of Norstead, she was defeated by an ogre who humiliated her and then sold her into slavery in the Arab lands. There she was passed from one sultan to the next because of her shrewish tongue and her “magical” ability to make a man’s dangly parts wilt with a wave of her hand.:-) After two years of this nonsense, she’s had enough and attempts an escape, trying to get to Baghdad, where she hopes to find a ship to take her home and raise an army to oust the beast who took over her lands. As she’s hiding out in a desert cave after a fierce storm, she encounters a man like none she’s seen before, who claims he’s a seal – as if that’s possible – but she thinks he might actually be a troll. Despite her initial dislike of him, when he promises to take her to Baghdad, she believes he could be useful to her. Needless to say, things don’t exactly go as planned, and through a series of crazy events, she ends up married to the “troll” and going home with him to Sandy-Egg-Go, where she discovers he may not be as bad as she originally thought. Madrene is definitely a woman who speaks her mind and has no filter between her brain and her mouth. I’ve found this quality irritating in other heroines I’ve encountered, but with Maddie, it’s rather charming. She’s also very stubborn, another quality which often annoys me, and which leads to plenty of head-butting with Ian, but I have to admit that I admired her determination and her ability to hold her head high even in the midst of trying circumstances. She also has softer, more vulnerable moments that make her relatable, so overall, I liked her pretty well.

Ian and his SEAL team are sent to Iraq on a mission to infiltrate a terrorist camp and capture their leader. When Ian sees something suspicious in a cave, he goes to investigate and finds a bedraggled woman who he mistakes for the terrorist’s escaped mistress. Even though she’s not much to look at, he feels rather sorry for her, so when his mission is completed, he extracts her along with his team. Back at the base, he finds out that she’s definitely not the person he thought she was. Underneath all the ragged clothes and grime was a beautiful swan, who has no papers and knows nothing about the terrorists. In fact, she’s telling them crazy stories that don’t make much sense. When it’s time to return to San Diego, he hates leaving her behind, so he reluctantly agrees to a temporary marriage so that she can get into the US. But once they’re back stateside, he finds it harder and harder to resist the temptation she presents. And he also discovers that the CIA wants to use Maddie to lure out more terrorists. For the most part, Ian is stereotypical military man, who’s both stubborn and a bit high-handed at times. As a SEALs commander, he expects his orders to be followed, and Maddie is anything but compliant. This leads to lots of bickering between them that stunted the emotional connection for probably about 2/3 of the book. Beneath all the surface bluster, Ian is a good guy, but maybe not quite my kind of guy. He does have a few softer moments that I enjoyed, but he also had what I deemed a lame-brained moment at the very end of the story when he apparently went out to lunch with another woman after Maddie left him for a few weeks. I thought if he truly loved her that he should have been trying to find her, but instead she accidentally finds him with the other woman. This wouldn’t have been a big deal if it had been explained away as a business lunch or something similar, but it happened in the final pages and wasn’t really addressed, leaving me rather annoyed with him.

Between Madrene’s huge family and Ian’s SEAL team, there are supporting characters aplenty. In addition to Maddie’s father, Magnus, we get to see her uncles, Geirolf (The Last Viking) and Jorund (Truly, Madly Viking), and her brother, Ragnor (Wet & Wild), along with all their respective mates and growing families. The SEALs are a colorful bunch of guys with wildly different personalities. Pretty Boy, who of course got his nickname because of his good looks, will become the hero of the seventh book, Down and Dirty, while Cajun charmer, Cage, crosses over to Ms. Hill’s Cajun series to get his story told in Snow on the Bayou. I’m a little disappointed that these two guys appear to be the only ones who get their own stories, because all the others are a fun bunch, too. Geek and JAM were particular standouts to me. As a lover of brainy guys, Geek was adorable, and with JAM being an ex-almost-priest, I think he could make an interesting hero. Last, but not least, is Maddie’s brother, Torolf, who is a SEAL himself. He leads the charge back to the past to avenge his family’s honor and take back their land in the next book of the series, Rough and Ready. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention Ian’s feisty, finicky cat, Sam, who manages to save the day, which was super-cute.

Overall, I liked Hot & Heavy and found it to be pretty entertaining. However, I still thought that the plot, especially for the first 2/3 or more of the book, was a little thin. There just wasn’t a lot happening action-wise and what little action there was tended to be glossed over. Toward the last quarter or so, the story picks up pace a bit and there was some excitement to keep me engaged. I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about the author waiting until those final chapters to reveal that Madrene had time-traveled. I suppose it made sense within the context of the storyline, but at the same time, it didn’t give Maddie or Ian much time to process that information. In fact, the story ends with him still not being certain if he believes it, which was a little unsatisfying. Also the humor was a bit off for me in this one. I just didn’t think it was as LOL funny as some of the other books of the series have been. IMHO, the jokes about Maddie’s large breasts and the way all the men can’t seen to keep their eyes off of her were a little overdone. I believe that Ian and Maddie’s mule-headedness and constant bickering was meant to be funny, and sometimes, it could be rather amusing. However, it simply didn’t tickle my funny bone in that way, but if you’re the type of reader who enjoys the hero and heroine constantly butting heads in a more light-hearted manner, you’ll probably love it. Otherwise, though, the writing was strong and for the most part, I liked all the characters, so in spite of my perceived weaknesses, it was a good read.

Seems like Sandra Hill take the idea of "The Taming of The Shrew" from William Shakespeare. Madrene Olgadottir indeed is a shrew. What she do for almost entire time is nag, nag, nag and mooooore nag. If I become Ian MacLean I might be nuts with Madrene's nagging. But since this book is romance novel, of course Ian love Maddie (Madrene's nickname) despite her nagging. Beside, Ian is a hot-headed man with receeding hairline and temper hot enough to pop the vein in his head, so he and Maddie is a match from heaven :))

Sandra Hill is my author autobuy when it come to silly and humorous book. Yep, her sillines sometime is too much and more like slapstick humor. But I always read her book, especiall her Viking Navy SEALs book when I'm on bad mood or need laugh after a hard day. You might be want to read the precious books, since this book is continued from Wet and Wild which tell Ragnor's story, Madrene's brother. Coincidende or not, Ian is Ragnor's mentor from hell and his brothers in law. The SEALs team are crazy enough, they might be from asylum (just kidding), and their act always make me laugh. If you love silly story, not care about plot, just read Sandra Hill's :))

When has Sandra Hill ever written a bad book in this series? NEVER! She just keeps getting better and better with her people and bring back old friends for you to catch up with. Madrene is finally going to come to this century, not that she knows it or knows that her family has all come to this time period. She thinks that she's getting away from a big whohow in the Middle Eastern desert and finds herself trapped in a small cave with yet another man, Ian. But unknown to her, she has managed to come forward in time and she is being mistaken for someone else.

After her "identity" has been straightened out, she either marries Ian to come to the States, or he leaves her there, to try to make her own way (she still thinks that she is in her own time frame to some extent). She marries Ian. Ian has unknowingly has been "played" by his superiors and even his own dad to marry Madrene - they still think that she's a spy and if she isn't, maybe they can use her to draw the spies out into the open. Ian's company in the meantime have been teaching Madrene practical things for her to get by in this time frame. And then low and behold, Ian's brother-in-law is really Madrene's own long lost brother... Now let the fun really begin.

I've gotta say. I think that this book, so far, is my absolute favorite of Sandra Hill's books. It reads fast and beautifully. The emotion, the love, the sex, are all there and in the perfect quantity. The plot is believable and well executed.

Ian MacLean is as hardassed as they come. Leader of a SEAL team, Ian takes it in spades when something dangerous has to be done, like entering a cave in enemy territory. But what he finds there will knock his socks off.

Madrene Ogladottir is the last of her family alive. Alone he defended her homestead of Norsestead until Steinhold took her prisoner and threatened to kill off all of her holders. He sells her into the harems of the Arab lands when she refuses to wed him. One day, two years later, she finds herself in a horrible sandstorm one minute and a cave shelter the next.

Ian wander upon a woman, smelling to high heaven and looking like Phyllis Dyller. What is she doing in the middle of the desert? And why does Ian feel like he knows her already?

One of the most silly and ridiculous books I have ever read. I loved it. Don't expect to learn anything or find a hidden message or think the answers of the universe will be found here. This book is pure fun. Madrene is a viking woman whose home was taken and she was sold in the middle east. She escapes one day and falls asleep in a cave. Meanwhile, about 1,000 years later, a team of Navy SEALs are on a mission. Ian MacLean finds the woman or rather she finds him and bops him on the head and ties him up.

2020 bk 48. Madrine was the only family left in 10th Century Norseland - or so her family thought. Unknown to them an evil overlord has conquered their home, tortured and then sold Madrine into slavery - in the Middle East. Back in the 21st Century, our favorite SEAL team is ready for an operation in northern Iraq - one of the targets being a woman to be brought back alive. Lt. Ian MacLean MEET Madrine, In a Cave, In Northern Iraq, In the midst of a Seal Team Operation! This is the book I've been waiting for - in all previous books the Viking family members have been telling MacLean that he should meet Madrine. A lovely convulated plot filled with humorous scenes and misques.

More and more as I read these books they are becoming my guilty pleasure for the sheer cheese factor, which normally turns me off, but really works for this series, actually making it better. I often find myself giggling while reading due to the very obvious misunderstandings that happen.

Madrene and Ian are more than a match for each other. I think their verbal battles are just another form of foreplay for them. Madrene was refreshing with her blunt and often inappropriate talk. She had all of the SEALs and other military personnel eating out of her hands. I was surprised at how much I liked her in this book because in the previous books when she was in them I didn't care for her.

If you are looking for a fun sexy book make sure to check out this series.

Was looking forward to this book since Ragnor kept on teasing Ian how his shrew of a sister, Mandrene, would be perfect for him.

I'm really glad Mandrene left because there was nothing for her there anymore. Poor girl. Maybe it was good the others left before the invaders came (I was wondering what good reason there would be for them to time travel out of their century).

I enjoyed this book but I don't like when people 'take a break' because they need 'alone' time and I found the mispronounced words inconsistent and annoying after awhile. I did like the characters in the book and the romance.

My Review:

I love a good time travel romance so this book was right up my alley. While the story was a little predictable, the humor was not. I found myself laughing out loud page after page. The star couple, Ian and Maddie, had an opposites attract thing going on and their spats kept me on my toes. With a well-developed cast of characters, complete with nicknames and backgrounds such Esquire underwear model, priest, race car driver, linguist/college professor, and a genius who received his doctorate at the age of eighteen, as I felt as if I was among friends, chapter by chapter.

Maddie’s antics had me wanting to shake her at some times and nodding in solidarity in others as she fought between her heart and her honor. Her misunderstanding of common words and phrases was very funny, and at times ingenious!

Ian’s group of well-meaning friends and his overbearing have an uncanny knack for irritating him as they do their best to see him happy once and for all.

Maddie meet’s life’s challenge head on until she realizes she’s in over her head. Will Ian come to her rescue or will he decide the little Viking is more trouble than she’s worth?

This is the 5th book in Sandra Hill’s Viking series, yet it read extremely well as a stand-alone novel. I look forward to reading the others and more of Sandra.

Ian MacLean is the baddest of the all. A the team leader of a group SEALs he lives for the adrenaline rush. The latest mission takes him to Iraq to free some hostages. On the mission he spots a cave and checks it out. Even though he is prepared for the worst, he is not prepared for a female Viking Warrior.

Madrene Olgadottir was left home to defend the homestead when her father and brothers went on tour. She is almost helpless when she is betrayed by the very man that should help her. When she refuses to wed him, he sells her to a harem in the Arab countries. And now, when Madrene finally managed to escape after two years, a sand storm forces her to take refuge in a cave. Where she meets a guy in strange clothing.

This is the first book of this type I have ever read. And by type I mean a viking time travel romance. The book is silly, sometimes funny and sometimes plain stupid but I can´t forget it. I actually read it in July and I still remember quite a lot. Maybe because it was so silly. It sure isn´t a good book but I think I will re-read it sometime in the future. But I can´t tell you why, really....

I have read only one book in this series before picking this one up, and that's Wet & Wild, Ragnor and Alison's book. I found myself loving Ian in that book even though he was just one of the characters, and Ragnor told him he would get along with Ragnor's sister, Madrene.

So, I eagerly picked up Hot & Heavy to read more about Ian, and his love interest, Madrene. I was not disappointed. While time-traveling is a far-fetched idea and some of the storyline a little silly at times, I very much enjoyed Ian and Madrene's story. They were truly perfect for each other, and the sex scenes between them was definitely hot and heavy!

Well I read the Last Viking and might have skipped a few books in between as I didnt like the plot(Im picky) and the ended with this one. Maddie was cute and had spunk from the beginning. She never changed. She was spirited from the beginning til the end and I loved loved her absolutely. Ian was sexy and he never lost his character all through either and I loved how he didn't believe the time travel part readily. It just made him more easier to believe. Loads of L-O-L moments throughout. Loved the secondary SEALs characters and loved the reunion. Hoping the rest of the series will be as good as this.

Gift from a friend who thought I would enjoy it as it said Navy Seals on it. This book is a bit military, a bit sci-fi (time travel) and heavy on romance and sex. I am a murder mystery who dun it type reader.

Story: Navy Seals go on a mission, bring back women who they think might have some intelligence that will help them in the war. However she turns out to be a time traveler from 1,000 years before, and never twigs she is not in the same time frame! A Navy seal fulls in love with her who has issues with his father!

After reading this humorous time travel romance a second time it was just as enjoyable as the first time. I liked the alpha heroine and her bickering with the hero. The SEAL team members in the series are just so adorable. During a mission to catch a terrorist, Navy SEAL Ian comes across viking warrior princess Maddy.

A bit of a twist on the usual story for Sandra Hill. In this book she has the sister of many of the men who have time traveled come to modern times. She is 'found' by a navy seal who we know from other books and is friends with the other family of time traveling Vikings. More adventure and humor abound. I was an interesting story to see the time travel from the female perspective.

I liked the characters for the most part. I get a little frustrated with how often people talk over each other and don’t listen in these books. Conflicts caused by completely avoidable communication errors are a pet peeve of mine.
