I learnt following very important lessons from this book:

True teams have a very clear set of priorities in following order:

1. Mission first
2. Needs of the team second
3. Needs of the individual third


In absence of rules people make thier rules. You need to carefully create and develop the code of honor for the team and ensure thier complete buyin.


To build a cohesive team, you should start with great players. Greatness doesn't happen by chance, nor does it occur in a vacuum. Greatness comes from, first, a passion for what you do; and second, a clear understanding of what you can and want to be best at.

At first I thought this was going to be a manual on how to recruit teammates and what to look for; instead it turned out to be a book of the importance of rules. Keeping a strict code of behaviors that everyone agrees on is what Singer continually expounds on, and I for one was surprised. Still, an important read that everyone should have. A rather startling comparison between the Second Law of Thermodynamics and human emotion viz. business awaits you at the end.

Skimmed. Centers around a "code of honor" which induces the "team" to put the business first without reciprocation from the business owner. Some reasonable ideas for such a code, but the taint of "What can my underlings do for me?" is off-putting.
