Rate this book
Twelve-year-old Tommy Gorman goes missing. With his mother watching his sister’s softball game at the Little League complex, Tommy seeks to find his friend and is lured into the woods by a man holding a turtle. Following the softball game, neither Tommy’s frantic mother nor anyone else can find him. Only thing found is a dead painted turtle.

When a search party discovers the grave of a murdered boy, killed four months earlier, Detective Benny Fidalgo believes he has only days to find Tommy alive. In investigating, he focuses on Little League officials, a film crew, and residents and employees of a nearby psychiatric facility. However, Fidalgo, eager to solve his first major case, prematurely arrests a suspect who sues the town. As a result, Blacksburg’s Police Chief suspends Fidalgo and regrets hiring him as a favor to a friend. Undeterred, Fidalgo pushes forward…able to do so with the support of two seasoned detectives who believe their new colleague has what it takes to ensnare the serial killer operating under their noses for years.

Tim Connolly also worked at NatWest USA as I did (1972-1993)

I usually prefer non-fiction or historical books even ones 🤔 analyzing a certain real estate mogul from New York who became Electoral College President. This novel by Tim Connolly was a well developed story about Detective Benny Fidalgo who so many Blacksburg Police Officers felt was in over his head in investigating the disappearance of Tommy Gorman. He was a hero in Afghanistan but didn't have the police background a Chief Thompson should have insisted on. What he had was a gift and an never say die attitude about Justice.

Benny is a man of principles focused on doing the right thing not necessarily getting credit for his achievements. I certainly felt that the Story of Benny Fidalgo could be a book series and then I learned at the end of the book that Tim Connolly has another couple of Benny Fidalgo Detective Stories ready to publish!

Any citizen would be proud to have a cop like Benny as their local crime fighter. Anyone like Trish or Murph would enjoy a colleague like Benny.

This story reminds me of my pet Turtle 🐢 Petey who my grandmother, Agnes Simanowith gave to me for my 7th Birthday in 1954! Peter died 1998!

Just finished reading this amazing book. The writer brings you into the story from the first chapter. Didn’t want to put it down. Description of the chapters allows you to picture them in your head and really makes you feel you know them. Lots of twists to keep it interesting. Loved it and can’t wait for a follow up. You won’t be disappointed. Clorinda
