The Death Whisperer #2

Of Heat and Obsession

Rate this book
They call me their captive, their pet, their toy.

One prince wants to keep me; another desires to steal me away. And a third? I think he wants to end my life.

During the day, I’m kept by the possessive and alluring Prince Blaze and the charming Prince Treyton. At night, I find myself…somewhere else. There, I’m no less a prisoner than I am when I’m awake. The psychotic and deranged Night King wishes to clip my wings and keep me caged.

Everything changes when Calan—the icy, aloof, and cold-hearted prince of the Winter Court—spirits me away to the overrun Summer Court. He hopes to use me to find the elusive Death Whisperer and get revenge on behalf of his brother.

What will he do when he discovers the fae he’s looking for is none other than the servant he despises and desires in equal measure?

With Day and Night forces attacking us from every direction, a mysterious assassin following in my footsteps, and a deadly virus rampaging across the territories, I’m not sure my powers to heal will be strong enough to save us.

How can one female repair a world torn apart by war, bloodshed, and hatred?

Death has whispered to me for years now, but I’m afraid of what will happen if I finally decide to start listening.

This is book two of a reverse harem series and will end on a cliffhanger. It is slow-burn and slow-build and has enemies-to-lovers themes. The love interests in this series are psychotic, possessive, and deranged antiheroes who take what they want, when they want it, regardless of the consequences. They care about absolutely no one...except for the FMC, though they'll have to work hard to win her over.

Triggers include—abuse, sexual assault (not by the harem), and murder.

I was so looking forward to this book! The first book in this series was amazing. I loved the main character, I loved the idea of her healing and killing powers and I loved her mates and the mates we still had to meet. This story is very clearly a slow burn, meaning that it takes a while to get somewhere, but I happen to like those kind of stories. I was therefore really excited that the paperback of this book was finally available last week.

And once more I was flying through this book. Plot-wise not much is happening although we start to see what the main plot of the series might be and what roles all characters will play in that main plot. However, there is a lot going on when it comes to relationship building and introducing new characters to us as a reader. And because of that there was not one moment that I was bored. I was really enjoying myself.

It helps that all those characters are interesting. None of them are really good people. Especially the princes clearly have lost their way. But that's also the point the author is trying to make. These princes are not good people. They're looking down on the people they're ruling. Something has to change here. And it's clear that our heroine might be the one with the power to change things. For herself. For everyone. For the better.

For me the book could have been a little longer though. The cliffhanger was nice and I'm really looking forward to keep on reading but I guess there is a reason that epic fantasy books are usually a little bit longer than books more focussing on the romance. This second book, just like the first book, is still very much about introducing the world and the characters to us. However, if that's already this interesting I can't wait to see what will happen once it's time to really play in this world.

My goodreads app keeps restarting when I’m mid-review which is annoying because I wrote a lot about this one and it’s gone now 🥲🥲. The main gist of my review though is that while this storyline feels super unique and creative, this book felt like so much was being dragged out. My review of the first book was actually that there was too much stuff being thrown at the reader for us to get enough familiarity with every concept. And this book had the opposite problem where we weren’t given enough progression or new information and parts felt stagnant, like I was ready for the next events to happen with a quickness.

At this point in the story I was pretty frustrated by the lack of relationship development. And I don’t necessarily mean steam as a lack of spice is really not something that impacts my reviews at all. But the lack or emotional development or progression felt like a loss. There was some physical advancement in terms of a couple kisses, but they didn’t feel special at all. I would hope by now that the FMC would have at least started to develop some affection toward those we’re told are fated for her, however she still doesn’t like any of them, still thinks she’s just a captive servant, and only tolerates their presence because she has to, she barely even feels a pull toward any of them and what she does feel is just confusion.

Based on the plot, I had thought this series would be around 3-4 books long, but now I’m thinking it’s going to have to be closer to 6 or 7 books based on the pacing. I can’t see how else there will be enough time to adequately develop all these relationships and give the plot the attention it needs. I’d like to see less time focused on descriptions of how dark and bad and angry all these guys are and a LOT more time on the plot advancement and relationship development

All my theories are coming true……….I do wish the FMC could just understand that these guys are her mates. It would solve much. Everyone just needs to speak up. None of the guys tell her, why?

Plot 3/5⭐️
Spice 0/5🌶️
Romance 3/5💘
Tension 3/5🥵
Vibes 4/5👏🏻
Multi-1st person POV

Guys this sequel was a long time coming (over a year) but I enjoyed it! I was skeptical when I saw it was just under 300 pages but there must be crack in the pages. I love the FMCs secrets and the upcoming slice of humble pie the men will eat when they all learn the truth. No spice but I'm enjoying the tension and the slow-burn. Doesn't really end on a cliffhanger but I'm still excited for the rest of this series. But who knows when that'll be 🤣

Disclaimer: I’m going to review it without spoilers at the top, then create a line and anything below that line will be spoilers. Do with that what you will.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again. Many series have the curse of Book 2. And this series has that very issue.

Here’s what I liked:
- A RECAP!!! I love when authors do this at the beginning of a book about the prior books. It’s so easy to level-set if it’s been a minute since you read the last book.
- This author keeps you on your toes with some of the plot twists.
- Kassandra being spunky and growing into herself more and more.
- Aleksander and Mikage. I’m just leaving it at that for the non-spoiler part.
- The men trying to come to terms with their feelings towards Kassandra. It’s cute seeing them struggle some.
- Seeing Serena’s development. I’m interested to see where this goes with her.
- I have a love/hate relationship with Calan and him coming to terms with his feelings. Sometimes he’s such a royal prick but I also love seeing the struggle.
- The way Kassandra’s outfits on the covers are actually described and used in the books. This is so cute and unique and I love being able to see a physical manifestation of the outfits described because I always struggle with imagining what authors describe sometimes as it pertains to outfits.

What I didn’t like:
- Blaze & Treyton threatening every man. It’s continuing to happen and just really making for an overly toxic and controlling foundation for their relationships with Kassandra, even if she pushes back. I like possessive but this is overboard. Especially literally killing men over them looking at her.
- The men themselves. Some of these personalities leave you wanting. It’s not a mate bond, but instead just pure lust-driven, obsessive toxicity. Can they start getting some redeeming qualities?
- The author forgetting what she’s written before: Blaze knew love before but then later didn’t, Kassandra never traveling but wasn’t it mentioned that they bounced around courts when she was imprisoned with that lady?
- The triple repeating of words. I liked it when it described Calan’s taps. And again a couple other times. But then it just kept springing up as a writing tactic and I got annoyed by it.
- Overuse of the same words like macabre. Use a thesaurus.
- The plot REALLY did not progress much in this series. The first book was a bit anticlimactic but this one absolutely was worse. Nothing really happened. It was a fluff/filler book in the series. There was minimal growth or explanation when it came to the men, the redemption arcs haven’t occurred, etc. Like did you wanna make a book where nothing happens? I’m all for slow-burn but this is SLOW even in plot development.
- Lack of ‘Runt’ interactions which made the plot kinda cute/funny before was disheartening. I’d like to see the reason for him being around solidified/explained. Also, lack of side characters being in this book like Serena. It’s so minimal and the charm and potential of book 1 just flopped in this book.

Overall, the book was just okay. This author needs to move this plot along and dangle a few more carrots in front of our face and make some things happen. There was just minimal development in this book. I’ll continue the series but my god, something needs to happen. I’m worried it’ll all wrap up at the very end and seem anticlimactic because it’s rushed.

SPOILERS BELOW THIS LINE
—————————————————

- Aleksander being San. It makes sense once it was called out, but also the author did a really good job of confusing the readers. Especially when I kinda got gay vibes from San.
- Aleksander again. Because he’s one of few potential men that I actually like. I loved this quote: - What the hell are you doing, Aleks? my mental voice shouts. Shhh. Just take your cock like a good little bitch, give it a stroke, and then kiss its freedom goodbye, I tell myself firmly. It has a new owner now.
- Favorite quote (how all men should be lol): I bite down on my lower lip hard enough to draw blood as I stare at the way her dress clings to her breasts. All I want to do is pull the material down and worship her the way she deserves. Or perhaps I’ll push her skirts over her waist, drop to my knees like the devout worshiper I’ve just become, and search for my penitence between her legs. I’ll start a new religion—Kassandra.
- Mikage, Draven, and the prisoner—why are they in the plot? Are there some potential men? What did the priest mean about Draven and who he calls himself?

You know it's going to be bad when the book is so short and so much of the beginning is just recapping the events of the first book from everyones pov (which doesn't differ so isn't necessary).

We established in the first book that Blaze had been learning sign language & could understand Cassandra perfectly & we had Cassandras shocked reaction to that.
So why in the second book is this same scene being played out again like it's the first time? The author really needs to rememeber what happened in the first book so these things don't keep happening.

It's such a drag that the character has all these disabilities with communication, like i get it, you're box ticking. But she is just always aggressively doing sign language & angrily writing then having her shitty spelling corrected & it's tired.
The entire first book was her communicating a lot with an eyebrow raise & expecting everyone to understand the meaning behind her facial expressions while she can't seem to comprehend things that are told to her.

How many times do we have to have men protect her, her thinking she is a prisoner & they just want to use her & shes mad constantly for that.
Ok girl, well go take your penniless self with your disabilities & escape if you really think you can.

The incessant whining is too much, you can't be both powerful & an escape artist & dangerous while also being an underfed idiot, pick a personality & stick with it.

It's lazy writing when authors make the female lead character combative for no reason to nake it seem like there is tension in the romance.
Theres no tension if she's throwing up gang symbols & only a baddass in her head.
Put up or shut up.

need more

So we are two books in and there is still not a single relationship between her and any of her would be suitors. I don’t need immediate relationship but it would have been nice to have at least one of them build something between them, but instead we are still no where with any of them and at this point I am not even routing for any of them either. That leaves me not really caring at this point. I need something to look forward to and right now I could care less and I am not sure if I will continue on. Slow burn is one thing but there is no spice(not sure if I missed the memo) and none of the guys have even given her a reason to go for them. IF I continue I better see some major groveling earning her but at this point that needs more than one book and not sure there is enough for me to want to endure that. But at the same time if everything happens in the next book I feel like it would be rushed, we don’t even know all her mates, honestly I am a bit bored. I think if she had at least one of them to lean on and had started treating her right I would definitely go to the next book….decisions, decisions I may come back again another time but not right now.

i’m kinda binge reading all this authors books atm! i love her writing style, however i wish this series was… idk…. i find this one abit harder to enjoy because of the blatant misogyny from the love interests.
All the owning, calling her a slave, like she’s your love interest… why are we calling her a whore and a slave?!!!! we can do a good enemies to lovers plot line without being misogynistic and a basic ass. It’s not just Calan or whatever he’s called, it’s like basically all the love interests in this series are freaking asses who are just fetishising over owning her, and then just shoving the word ‘mate’ in there to make it somewhat okay??
like i’ve read other series of hers (mated by fire & knot what he seems) and i find they are much easier to read as the love interests aren’t misogynistic.
Like i understand at first the love interests need to be abit pricky, but it’s just not enjoyable reading the same thing over over from all the guys POVS on just fucking her and owning her… like no.
However i love our main character & i do find this storyline of her being the death whisperer very unique & i’ve never really come across anything like this before, im already deep into this series so ill probably finish it!

Awesome book, but...

The little inconsistencies in this book drove me nuts! First, Kassandra had trim hips, then wide, childbearing hips. Blaze notes that he knew love several time in his life then later thinks that he doesn't have a clue about love. Calen
once thought of winter being death but goes on to argue that it has/brings no more death than other seasons. San is described as injured but she'd supposedly healed him. Blaze's scars, which had been described as gone from her healing him while he slept in Book 1 are brought up as a feature he has in this book.

Okay, I think those were the biggest annoyances. Sorry for the complaints. Except for the above, I don't want to give away any of the story, but I can tell you that the book was entertaining, from beginning to end. It definitely pulled me in, and I didn't want to let it go. The cliff was steep! I cannot wait for Book 3. I definitely recommend this one.

I like to think that this far a LOT of potential. But going from book one (where literally nothing happened and was full of superficial things), this was just, I don’t even know really.

I feel like a lot of this was half thought out, something will start and not be finished. I’m being pulled into thirty directions with little to no explanation. There were a lot of things that I felt served no purpose or frankly, didn’t add up.

Every time we start to learn something, it’s interrupted. I’m not sure if it’s intentional or if the author doesn’t know how she wants the story to go but I was trying so, so hard to see where this was going. The only thing I was able to confirm is that the author is obsessed with people stepping in poop, considering the amount of times it was mentioned.

I also feel like this series is going to be dragged out, considering nothing of significance really happened.

Add in the fact that Kassandra is so annoying, I can’t stand her character.

I dont know why, but I thought this was a Duet for some reason...it is not.

I dont generally start incomplete series because if I don't binge on it once, it's never going to happen.

Anyway, I liked this book better than the first. It had a quicker pace and more interaction between the main characters.

Unfortunately because of the lack of interaction between them initially I'm having a hard time seeing any chemistry. It seems the only reason they give into their attraction is due to the mate bond. The FMC Kassandra loathes the princes, rightly so, because they aren't good people. They're marginally nice to her...sometimes. I don't see the attraction tbh.

Minor plot holes exist, the fact that the FMC sometimes knows about bring mated and sometimes doesn't for example.

Also, it ends on a mild cliffhanger with my favorite possible MMC so far.

Okay. There's a lot happening in my head right now but let's give this a go! I'm enjoying the story. Really am. I think I'm a little over hearing about her plump brĕ@sts and toned stomach though- which, she had been starved forever so it's not actually toned, just thin. Very different. Also the number of times someone started a thought with the phrase "I swear..." was grating on me. That aside, because I know I'm being a bit picky, I just want more from the relationships. It's moving really slow and it's frustrating! Can't a girl be thrown against a wall and kissed properly? Can't ONE of these guys tell her she's their mate?
Four stars for the story though, because I'm quite enjoying it. Curious to see where it's all going!

Wut in tarnation, how the hell does this keep happening to her 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyway. Enjoyed this one but not as much as the first. Maybe just don’t like Calan as much 😂 I am def a Blaze Stan lol.

Just wanted to note that I love RH and enjoy reading them but sometimes the spice is just too much, too repetitive and i skin over it. It’s really nice to read an RH/why choose that’s a slow burn and focuses more on development. Kisses here and there are great bc it shows we’re heading in the rh direction. But I really enjoy how much the slow burn focuses on developing the relation between each guy when I can only speculate how many is in the harem

ETA: started 12/10 and finished 12/10. Not sure why it’s saying posted 12/11 and 12/10 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was so excited when I saw book 2 had been released, I even read the last chapters of book 1 to remind myself. I read a lot. More surprising and well received was the "what's happened so far" at the start of the book. I thought we would just pick up where we stopped, alas NO. The book repeats book 1 with almost every scene. That is a huge pet peeve of mine.

Our heroine has cases of TSTL .....rushing into battle then blaming her malnutrition for her poor fighting skills. I was shouting in my head "where the heck where you going anyway!!!

Between the repetition, the heroine losing brain cells and the slow progression of the plot, I was done.

This book was so good. The first book focused more on Kassandra and then Blaze and Treyton. This book seems to have focused on Calan more. She officially has 3 mates. Is the assassin who is supposed to kidnap her, Aleksander, one too? And what’s up with Draven? I was thinking he was her friend Raven but maybe that’s the guy in the dungeon and Draven took over. So she is dreaming but she is somehow able to dream walk and is really in the night court. People in the summer court thing that she will stop the war and save them. That the death whisperer is meant to save them all. This book was a wild ride.

WOW!!!!!!!

This series just keeps getting better and better. We have so much going on. There is so much drama and suspense with a ton of mystery involved. Who is Kassandra really. Was she born with these powers or something else? Who is the female voice with stages and the prince’s? These are some of my questions. I really hope we start to get answers soon but I am completely invested in this series. It is extremely well written and developed. I absolutely enjoyed this book. We get to the end and boy what a major cliffhanger this one has. It absolutely a must read and doesn’t disappoint.

It seems like everyone around Kassandra
can tell that the spring court & fall court princes are her mates but her.
Not much happened in this one tbh.
Just another prince, well now king, became obsessed with her.
The winter prince talking down to her and continuously calling her “servant."
And Aleksander went from trying to unalive her to wanting to possess her. They're all treating her like she's a toy to play with and pass around.
I know Katie said it was going to be a slow burn
But I didn't think she meant it snail-pace slow.
I need to know who the fae in the night court prison is.

Of Heat and Obsession, the second book of the Death Whisperer series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). As with book one, I've noticed some inconsistencies again, usually with character descriptions. It's somewhat distracting, as the writer did a great job of setting up the characters in book one. I enjoyed the story line, but got annoyed at how over-protective the men are in light of Kassandra's growing powers and control. An engaging author, so I'll keep reading the series, but she could use a few proof-readers to weed out the small, distracting stuff.

As entertaining as the first book. We also learn a little more about what's going on, particularly with the dreams. I'm really curious who all is going to be in the harem. So far there's definitely 3. There's more sapphic pining with a POV chapter and again, I really hope more comes of it. I like Calan a lot more in this book than the previous one. I don't know really know why though because he's still an asshole (like all of them are). I love Mikage and while I don't think he's in the harem I hope he is because he's a sweetheart. I look forward to the next book.

Amazing, once again

I read this entire book in a day and still have no idea which way is up! Far too few questions were answered from book 1 just to have a million more pop up, and I'm loving it! I always end up figuring out plot lines and twists very quickly, but Katie's made me question everything I think I know about every person in these books. I am waiting with bated breath for book 3!

This book!! And that ending!!!
This book takes you on a journey and the inexperience of Kassandra of anything worldly related.
I did miss more pov's from Blaze and Trayton (I suck at names but I think these are the correct names) when Kassandra was on her journey but the story itself was good enough that it didn't annoy me too much.

But that ending and that reveal, darn it, now I have to wait for who knows how long. But it will be worth it.

📖 My Thoughts

the first book in this series was really good. it was one of my favourite reads from last year and I was on the edge of my seat waiting for this release...so what on earth went wrong between book one and book two.

this book had quite a bit of filler, most of the story dragged and didn't feel like it furthered the plot at all. I also felt like all the characters seemed more flat than they did in the first novel. I genuinely don't understand.. the last 20ish% was pretty decent but overall this book was disappointing.

⚠️ Triggers

death, violence, kidnapping

🏳️‍🌈 Representation

I don't remember any

🌶️ Spice

none...and if there was it was not memorable at all.

📝 Special Notes

I am going to read the next book when it releases but I am going to read it on ku first to see if it's even worth the money to add it to my physical bookshelves. I am a big fam of Katie may so I am honestly surprised this book missed the mark for me.

This series is very much a slow burn but I’m enjoying it so far. Kassandra does annoy me sometimes with her actions. One second shes meek and cowering and the next she’s bold and brash. Sometimes it doesn’t align with her personality. She always has to point out how she doesn’t know where the courage comes from. Otherwise, I’m interested in learning about the other mates and how the story progresses. I don’t think there will be a next book since It’s almost been a year since this one came out.

Lost

I'm a little lost on what the heck is happening!!! I really don't like the winter prince, he is an A-hole!!! Besides the 3 psycho princes that are her mates, that Kassandra, doesn't understand the bond or what a mate bond is. The other characters also have me wondering what the heck? So yep, I'm lost! I hope the next book will clear up the mysteries of all the crazy in this series.

This is the end for me. Everything has been up in the air for too long. None of the men are different- they're all possessive and psychotic but they're all also in the exact same stage of relationship with Kassandra. It would be nice if one of them were in a solid relationship with her so give her some grounding, but she's just constantly moving around and having lustful moments that don't lead to much. There's been a bit more of the plot shown, and I'm not that invested in it.

Well. That was a mess. A lot happens but to no real end. She’s problematically passed around like a hot potato, and it honestly made it a waste of a book.

If I’d known it wasn’t finished as a trilogy, I wouldn’t have started this series in the first place, knowing the second book would be a mess intended for the rest to potentially smooth out.

Also, FOUR different people say, “Well, well, well. What do we have here?” FOUR separate times.

Filler. That’s what we have here.

I love this series! It’s one of my absolute favorites, so I read it too fast and now I gotta wait again, but totally worth the wait. Something about the loving psychopath vibe just hits me all kind of right, and each of these RH members totally fit that bill. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

I adore Katie May and think I’ve read everything in her catalog.

Kassandra’s story is turning out to be quite the adventure and I’m excited to see what happens next.

I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because it felt like we leaned into Betraying Body Syndrome a little too heavily in this book and I can’t stand that trope.
