A Stitch in Time #4

A Castle in the Air

Rate this book
Portia Hastings has spent her life rescuing her younger sister from one scrape or another. Now, she has to step through time to do it, following Miranda from the nineteenth century to the eighteenth. Almost immediately, Portia is beset by highwaymen, which might be the most exciting thing to happen to her in a long time, even if she'd never admit it. When one of the highwaymen is injured, Portia makes the inexcusable mistake of helping him-she is trained as a doctor after all. Her travel companions abandon her, and she's left at the mercy of a highwayman who demands she continue tending to his compatriot's wounds. Portia soon finds herself at a crumbling castle inhabited by the destitute Earl of Ravensford. Benedict Sterling is in desperate need of money, and his solution is a ball, where a wealthy bride will win the title of countess, even if it does come with one thunderously ill-tempered earl. Portia agrees to a scheme to help Benedict look like a slightly more appealing bridegroom, while she continues to search for Miranda. Then there's the small matter of the castle, complete with a ghost intent on driving her out. But once Portia sets her mind on something, she's not going anywhere.

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Releasing today 10/31 A perfect Historical Romance filled with a ghost story to boot.

As with many Historical Romance type books you don't need to have read the others to enjoy the story but it always helps. There is a stitch in time in the Thorn Manor that helps our characters travel between times. The Stitch has a bit of a mind of it's own and while sometimes it doesn't do what you want it does tend to do what you need.

Portia is the most levelheaded and timid of the sisters she was raised with. She is a healer by trade and would be a doctor if she could, but being a woman has limited her in this vein. Portia isn't the one who goes on adventures, she usually just listens to the adventures of her sisters, while she is the stable one. But Miranda went into the stitch days ago and has not returned. To save her sister she will risk it.
description
Traveling the same road her sister would have taken, Portia ends up in a family carriage on the road to her destination when it is set upon by highwaymen. One is injured in the exchange and Portia is taken with the highwaymen to help nurse him back to help. In the dilapidated castle, that only has a few rooms to live in Portia will have a meeting of the wits with the Earl of Ravensford, Benedict Sterling. Just so happens the castle is also haunted and while Portia can't talk to ghosts they certainly can lash out at her.
"I did not do this."
"Of course you didn't"
"Thank you. I would not want you to think me a killer."
"Oh, I do not know you well enough to say that. I only know you well enough to say that. I only know that you are too clever to put the body of your victim in your own castle, and in the same place you once trapped your brother."

The Earl of Ravensford is destitute and needs a bride of means who will bolster the coffers to get his lands through this drought. He is on the marriage market and is at least honest enough to make sure any of the women coming to the ball for him to chose a wife know what he is offering. It all seemed like a great idea until he meets Portia. The woman who has captivated his mind and possibly his heart.

Portia doesn't have a way to save Benedict's lands but she is also intrigued by the man who is ever misunderstood but whose actions prove him a good steward of the people and the land. Maybe she can at least help with the making him more attractive to the women coming to the ball and with his ghost problems. There is also a missing golden clock, if found it could give Benedict enough money he wouldn't need to marry for it.

This was one of my favorite books of this series. Portia is so much fun in her matter of fact ways of speaking and Benedict was a man trying to do the right things but his land and his family even at the cost of his happiness. The two of them together have some witty banter that is always a good time and I enjoyed it all.

The ending was also very practical Portia, which made it all the more fitting.

I absolutely adore this series already, but there was something about these characters that was so appealing, so much fun to read, and so hard to put down. This was a fantastic installment to the series and truly shows how great of a writer Armstrong is and while she continues to be one of my absolute favorites and I will pick up anything she writes over and over again.

I really enjoyed Portia's adventure in the 18th century and how she came to associate herself with the Earl of Ravensford. A great conclusion to the series..

Portia Hastings is a timid, levelheaded healer who would have been a doctor in a different era. She is brave, clever, and I quite adored her. When her sister and husband don’t return, she goes through the time-slip and ends up set upon by highwaymen. It seems they are honorable ones at that. They only want to steal from the wealthy family she shares her carriage with. A highwayman is injured, and Portia stays to provide medical aid. The leader of the group promises her safe harbor to find her sister. The tale that unfolds delivered swoons, ghosts, and plenty of suspense. I found myself completely caught up, as I suspected who the masked men were.

Armstrong’s characters are flawed but redeemable, and meeting The Earl of Ravensford and his family was a delight. Ravensford castle and farmlands are in ruins thanks to a drought, and his late father’s management. Another landlord is trying to run him into the ground and the Earl is considering an arranged marriage to fill his coiffures. I became completely caught up in the telling from the mystery to the slow-building, banter filled romance.

Fans of time-slip romances, hauntings, suspense and adventure will want to snag this for themselves. While the story will hold on its own, I recommend reading or listening to the series in the order of its release. According to Armstrong, this is the last in the series, but may revisit these characters again. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

A Castle in the Air is the fourth and final book in the A Stitch in Time/Thorne Manor series. This series is a time travel Victorian mystery romance series.

Kelley Armstrong is my favorite author. I don't often gravitate towards historical fiction or time travel books. But somehow she mixes these genres (plus mystery and romance) and has created an incredible series.

This is book four in the series. It is Portia's story. It can be read as a standalone (the main characters are new). However I would strongly recommend reading in order since the previous characters do play a role in the story. Especially Miranda (Portia's sister, the heroine of book 3).

Portia is from the 19th century. But she decides to go to the 18th century to try to find her sister Miranda. While everyone else in her life has gone through the stitch in time Portia has always been too scared. So it was nice to see her live a little.

There was much to enjoy about this final book. I really enjoyed the romance. And I've always liked that Portia is a doctor. And while it was great that Miranda was in parts of this book I was a bit disappointed that we did not get to see Bronwyn. She was the original heroine of this series. And honestly I wish that she and Rosalind and their families could have had a part in the final book. But overall this was a wonderful series. And I will greatly miss these amazing characters.

Is it weird to say that I think I like Kelly Armstrong's romances better when she's not actually writing in genre romance? Because I think I do. This was fine! Who doesn't love a crumbling gothic castle? But I could have used something more.

If this is the end (I think it is), it ended with a fun romance that kept me entertained from start to finish. What a gem of a series!

Opening Lines-
“I am about to step through time, and I am terrified.”

Time Travel paired with gothic romantic suspense is a heady temptation and I wasn’t about to resist the pleasure of the latest in Kelley Armstrong’s A Stitch in Time series of standalones. A Castle in the Air is the fourth book, but only my second venture into the series (I read book two, A Twist of Fate) and I was able to appreciate the story perfectly fine because Ms. Armstrong filled in the story background nicely.

A Castle in the Air follows Portia Hastings introduced as a side character in the previous book who now gets her own adventure through the stitch in time hidden to all, but a few. I enjoy how the author doesn’t keep hitting reset with each new person who uses the time stitch. In the beginning of the series, of course, it was a scary new thing, but now a small circle know of it and the action plot of the book is about a combo of character relationships and the intrigue that is atmospheric and suspenseful involving ghosts, crumbling castle, and a mystery needing solving rather than focused on the time travel element.
Portia’s match is reluctant though attracted with his focus on his troubles. I love that she is most definitely an older sister in nature and has chosen a nurturing work as a doctor, too. She faces down highwaymen, ghost, someone not excited to have her riling up the earl and giving him an able partner to find a way out of his troubles, and she faces down that cranky man, too.

As to that ghostly, atmospheric part, like past stories, the ghosts are real though the villains are flesh and blood, enough. I enjoy the bit of thrill that made me a little nervous as Portia navigated through her adventure hitting surprises and twists. Series fans will enjoy seeing familiar faces though this is very much Portia and Benedict’s story. Another series hit and I can recommend it to those who enjoy a mashing of genres in a historical setting.

I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.

"A Castle in the Air" is part of the "A Stitch in Time" series, where each book follows a different sister who time travels (because why not?) and finds her perfect love match. Of course, it’s never that simple—there’s also action, mystery, misunderstandings… you get the idea. 😄

I’ve enjoyed each book in this series a little differently, mostly depending on how much I connected with the main character. In this one, we follow Portia—serious, practical, no-nonsense, and a doctor. Basically, my kind of heroine! I’m always drawn to grounded characters like her.

The plot sometimes feels a bit too convenient, like everything magically falls into place just when needed, which made it a little naive at times. But Kelley Armstrong has a way of writing that’s just so easy to read. Her characters feel real, and I always appreciate that her male leads are green flags, not walking red ones. 🙌

This is a cozy comfort read—perfect for a lazy weekend or to throw in your beach bag.

Rating: 3 stars. Not groundbreaking, but definitely enjoyable!

A haunted castle crumbing in ruins and a time traveler are the center of this intriguing tale.

Portia and her family have a stitch though time in that they can travel. She is worried for her sister that should have been back by now.

When she gets there trouble finds her fast. But she is a tough and resourceful.

Oh, you might try, but you would carry her into the ruined wing, only to wake up and find yourself locked within.”

Lord Sterling is grumpy and hard to get along with. Trying to save his legacy.

Oh, you might try, but you would carry her into the ruined wing, only to wake up and find yourself locked within.”

This is a time travel but reads more like a historical romance. I like be this author but this is my first book in this series. Will definitely be reading more though.

What a fantastic addition to an amazing series! I honestly can't decide which book is my favorite. They're all so wonderful!

This book can be read as a stand-alone, but it was so great when the characters from the previous books made an appearance.

A Castle in the Air follows Portia as she experiences the time slip for the first time. She plans on going through just to make sure that Miranda and Nicholas are safe and ends up on an adventure of her own. One that involves a murder mystery, romance, a highwayman, and a haunted castle. I loved seeing Portia come into her own during this story. She's a strong and resilient character who deserves her moment in the spotlight.

Thank you, Netgalley, and the publisher for allowing me an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

A fantastic page turning time travel, historical fiction, romance and mystery novel!! There is so much to this novel that I did not want to stop reading. I have read all of the books in the series and this was one of my favorites. This novel follows Portia, the middle sister, as she attempts to find her youngest sister in the eighteenth century. Portia goes through the time stitch and promptly lands herself into danger. She is held up by highway men while traveling to find her sister. Then she ends up helping the men who were attempting to rob her when one of them gets injured. Unable to find her sister she ends up staying with the highway men who are definitely more than meets the eye.

I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this book. It is the fourth in the series but I do think you could enjoy this book as a standalone. The author does give a forward that helps explain what has happened in the previous books. There was so much to love in this book from the fact that it was set in the 18th century but the main character was from the 19th century. There was an incredible romance aspect as well as a murder that needed to be solved. There was lots of action and overall a very satisfying story. I would recommend this novel to everyone!! I hope there will be more novels to come in this series! I also have to add that every cover of these books is absolutely gorgeous!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Victoria Editing for this ARC.

I have not read the first three books in this series, but the request page on NetGalley stated they could be read as standalone stories, so I decided to give this one a try. Overall, I would say that statement is true. While some past events and "off-screen" characters were mentioned, not being familiar with them did not stop me from enjoying the story, especially since enough backstory information was given when needed to aid comprehension. Portia was a relatable heroine and I enjoyed the relationship progression between her and Benedict. The story had a good blend of action, emotion and humour, and I was entertained throughout. This book is essentially an historical romance with the added fantasy elements of time travel and ghosts. The period was nicely established and the world building generally good throughout. Recommended to fans of historical fantasy. I am giving this book 4.5 stars.

This is a wonderful book for historical fiction/romance lovers that has a bit of a spooky twist.

Portia time travels into the past, and gets tangled up with some highway men. She eventually ends up at Lord Stirling's castle. She uses her doctor skills, but a ghost starts trying to harm her while she is there. Of course while all of the trying to figure out about the ghost, Portia starts to cozy up to Ben(Lord Stirling).

I had a lot of fun with this book with all of the different aspects to it. The ghost part and mystery part put me in the mood for Halloween, and the drama with Ben trying to save his land kept me interested in how it would play out. As always, I enjoyed the historical romance part too, with some time travel thrown in. I definitely have been liking Kelley Armstrong's books that are in the time travel themes.

Thank you to Victory and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

Sigh...

That ending felt super underwhelming. It felt like Kelley Armstrong did not know how to wrap it all nicely together.

Anyways, this was a great series. Kelley is definitely a go-to for time travel romance.

While just like the rest of the books in this series this one jumps right into the plot leaving little time for the reader to get footing before the story immerses them. This is an amazing read and what I really liked about it from the start was even though this is book four in the series you don't have to have read all of the previous books to get a great understanding of the plot. While it would make it slightly easier for character development you can still follow along perfectly even if you didn't read them all which is surprising considering how far into the series we have gotten. This book focus on our newest character Portia. Portia is Miranda's sister from book three and after she learns that Miranda is in trouble and isn't returned she immediately jumps through the time loop herself in order to save her sister from whatever is keeping her. Once she lands she is immediately caught by the highway men after a robbery turned sour and that is when the story really takes off. We get to see the relationships grow between Portia and robber Jay. This book was really fascinating and I loved the character interaction. The best part about this series is while each book follows the same world and similar overlying threads you still get the uniqueness of different main characters and a whole new plot lines for every book so it is very easy to follow and get lost in the story. Kelly Armstrong is a master at weaving her secondary characters into main players in later books and this is no exception. Her flare for writing, not just fantasy but now time pieces show that no door put before her will be able to stop her creative flow. I love everything about this book from the characters to the plot, even the dialogue and this is one series that I was sad to see and however great the ending was.

My favourite Stitch in Time book!! It had SO MANY things I loved. I finished it in a single sitting.

Things you'll find in this book
- Grumpy, impoverished Earl with a heart of gold
- Heroine who's incredibly smart and capable and has no time for bullshit (bonus points for medical training)
- A relationship where they bring out the best and support each other (when they're not bantering... they're great at needling and teasing each other)
- Only one bed
- Hauntings and murder mystery
- A dash of time travel (the heroine travels from the 18th century back to the 17th century, I think)

Just do yourself a favour and read it.

Also side note: this is the end of the "series" (they're interconnected standalones) for now, but I really hope we get a novel about Sabrina. I'm so intrigued by her after the revelations at the very end!

Another great story from Kelley Armstrong! I love the paranormal aspect of the ghosts in this story but the mystery was fantastic, I was not able figure out either mystery before they were revealed. I love that each book in the "A Stitch in Time" series centres around the manor but focuses on different characters. You might see characters from previous stories pop-up but they are always in the periphery. Looking forward to reading the novellas next, hopefully before the next book in the series is released.

Another book in the Stitch in Time gothic time travel mysteries! While earlier books have detailed the adventures of her sister Miranda and Miranda’s best friend Rosalind, this book focuses on Portia Hastings. Miranda and her husband Nicolas have traveled through the stitch to fulfill a promise but have not returned in the expected time so Miranda travels through the stitch to rescue them. I found all of the earlier books to be captivating, and this book was no exception- well written and enthralling.

I’ve never written a book and will probably never try. It takes a special kind of person to spin a tail and keep the reader interested. A stitch in time is a four book series by Kelly Armstrong. The first was pretty good, the second was OK. The third was a disaster… And the fourth book was very good. Go figure.

Sadly the end of this series, which I ended up quite enjoying - I am glad I did not end up not finishing the first book. I see there is a kind of spin-off by the same author, so I will more likely than not get started on that in the near future.

I loved it! This is one of my favorite authors. This series is especially ingenious. Bits about everyday life during different centuries woven with mystery and friendship and romance. The witty banter fits the time period and is charming and funny. I was so happy to hear updates on friends from past books in the series. Excellent novel! ARC netgalley.com

This might be my favorite of the series. It would be hard to pick my favorite between this one and the first one in the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries, time travel books, and historical romance. I really liked Portia and Benedict. Portia brought so much humor to the book. I found myself trying not to laugh out loud while sitting by myself in public. This story felt like it ended too fast, It is almost 400 pages, so I know it wasn’t short, but i couldn’t put it down.

I really enjoyed this one a lot. I love how practical Portia is, and I love her "nobody knows me in this time period, I can't ruin my reputation here, so I can bring out all the sass" approach to time travel. And her and Benedict's verbal sparring was extremely entertaining.
Portia's ghostly experiences are a lot more frightening than her sisters', she seems to be attracting very malicious ghosts. The mystery behind the haunting was good, but for me this was definitely mainly about the romance.
Miranda and Nico have a little cameo appearance here, but we do not see Bronwyn, William, Rosalind and August at all - though they are mentioned. This is the last book in the series for now, so I would have loved to have a little goodbye to the main couple from each book included. But Portia and Benedict also deserved having the spotlight all to themselves. Hopefully, we will get to say goodbye to the others in a holiday novella next year.
