From author Erica Wynters comes a fresh new series about a florist whose life is anything but rosy...
Florist Gwen Stevens knows two things to be true. One—her parents are never going to retire and hand over the reins to the family flower shop, Camelot Flowers, if Gwen can’t handle the business while they’re on their yearly trip to escape the cold of central Illinois in the Florida Keys. And two—she needs to get over her unrequited crush on her best friend, Chris Crawford. But when Gwen stumbles on the dead body of a high school friend, everything else in her life suddenly takes a backseat. Especially when Chris becomes the main suspect in the murder, and it seems only Gwen believes in his innocence. With her friend's freedom on the line, Gwen will use every lifelong connection she has in her small town of Star Junction to find the real killer, even if the sexy new police detective, Finn Butler, doesn’t want her help. Gwen trades gathering flowers for gathering evidence as she hunts down a murderer, and as the stakes grow higher—and Gwen grows closer to Detective Finn—Gwen's heart may not be the only thing on the line. Can she navigate the seas of suspects who all wanted the victim dead? Can she trust her torn feelings between Chris and Finn well enough to follow the right clues? Or will she be too late to stop the killer from striking again...this time even closer to home?
"You will fall in love with Erica Wynters' storytelling... and be guessing whodunit until the very end!" ~Gemma Halliday, New York Times bestselling author
Justin Hunt had serious issues with his friend Chris Crawford. They were schoolmates, teammates, and even tangled up in a few pranks together, but this disagreement was different. Chris dismissed it, and Gwen Stevens thought they’d work it out like they always had before. But, it’s unlikely now. Gwen got a text from Chris at two in the morning about an “emergency,” and although she’s embarrassed about always being at Chris’s beck and call, she thought it could be trouble, and she’s right … murderous trouble. Justin dead, and Chris is nowhere to be found, and the new resident, Detective Finn Butler, is sure he knows why.
Erica Wynters’s debut cozy is an exciting small town gem! I was hooked right off with the teasing friendship between our star Gwen and her longtime friend Chris Crawford being interrupted by Justin Hunt raising all kinds of hell with Chris. The rumors reveal money problems (of course), infidelities (great motive), scorned significant other (they’re always in the mix), long-time grudges (know someone long enough there’ll be grudges), and no honor among felonious partners (hey, they’re criminals). A small town should be the easiest setting to solve a murder with fewer people and gossip as an art form, but Gwen finds some are eager to share what they know and others refuse, some are an open book and others have secrets, and she’s in the way or maybe a target. Clever drama … engaging all the way to a surprise conclusion.
The crime, the plot, and having a surprise result are all important and well-developed by Erica Winters’ creativity, but, for me, it’s the characters I need to be respond realistically and in some way, capture my interest. Here they do. Gwen is a strong female portrayed with realistic strengths and weaknesses, boyfriend issues, and an engaging place in the family dynamic. The cast is loaded with diverse figures, but it is still relatively easy to follow everyone’s connection to the crime. I enjoyed the romantic triangle pitting Gwen’s longtime friend Chris against the obvious spark she feels for the new detective. Sides are formed, yet there is no definite decision made, however, I am firmly on Team Finn! I greatly enjoy the dance between him and Gwen with good steps mixed with the bad, and it’s a nice giggle following Gwen’s efforts to uncover Finn’s real name since he knows hers. I didn’t learn much about “marigolds.” I would have liked to have had some interesting insights or historical thoughts included about the flower, or maybe a connected clue discover because of the flower. Delightful fun!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Gemma Halliday Publishing. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
An engaging story, with, Gwen, who runs the local florist shop becoming embroiled in a murder mystery. I liked the characters who were very well created, and interacted with each other well.
Marigolds, Mischief and Murder is an intriguing small town cozy mystery with a great romance subplot tossed in for good measure.
Gwen Stevens has been hung up on her friend Chris Crawford for years. YEARS. She’d do anything for this guy, even after he’s firmly placed her in the friend zone. She’s been helping him renovate a building he purchased to start his own youth support centre. During a seemingly normal night of helping out, Justin Hunt enters and starts an argument with Chris. After being told to leave, Gwen heads for a night out with her bestie, Penny, where she hears another argument involving Justin. After being woken up in the middle of the night to a cryptic text from Chris, Gwen finds herself at his building. But she’s not alone - Justin is dead on the ground and Chris is the prime suspect. Knowing in her heart that Chris didn’t do it, Gwen sets out to prove his innocence - much to the chagrin of Finn Butler, the new (handsome)detective from out of town.
I thought this was a pretty solid book on the whole. The plot was well put together and I definitely had no idea whodunnit until the big reveal at the end. My hypothesis changed several times while reading but I was totally wrong with who I thought it was. I enjoyed being wrong and the buildup to the discovery was a lot of fun. I also felt the pacing of the book was good as well. There’s a definite passage of time, events outside of the murder happen to help move things along, and it helped build this small town into something real and believable.
I think the only thing I wasn’t fond of was Gwen’s total, utter devotion to Chris. Like, I get it, they’ve been friends for years and she’s been carrying a torch for him all this time. Penny was doing a great job as wingwoman trying to steer Gwen towards Finn. I actually really enjoyed Gwen and Finn’s interactions. The banter they had was fun to read and I loved the whole guessing what Finn stood for game. I was rooting for the two of them almost immediately and found I was getting annoyed whenever Chris would crash in and take her attention away!
The book ends off on a bit of a romance cliffhanger so I’m excited to see what happens next. Reeeeally rooting for Finn, though! I’m definitely not Team Chris over here!
If you want a good small town, cozy murder mystery with a love triangle romance then I would definitely recommend this!
Thanks so much to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review!
Great intrigue and characters! I’m team Finn 💯 and Gwen’s best friend had me giggling through the whole book. The mystery and sweet love story was so nicely balanced and it never lagged. I’d recommend this one to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries!
I should probably stop reading the whole series if I am only going to read one ARC, but I just can’t help myself. And that's how I ended up with this book. I signed myself up for Sunflowers, and even though it says I do not have to read the first two books, I couldn’t just leave it at that.
So we will start with the first book in this series – Marigolds, Mischief and Murder. Marigolds are my favourite flowers – check, mischief – I am not so sure about that, murder – check. We follow Gwen Stevens, the main character in this book and apparently in the whole small town where she lives in. I like this town and the people who live there, the author did a great job with their description and with showing us their relationship with Gwen. She is a very nice person and I am sure anyone who reads this story will like her. Also Finn, the new police detective who moved to the town from the big city, and to my surprise is funny and sweet and he is trying to fit into his new home which I really appreciate.
I like how Gwen’s relationship with Finn is shown and how it's slowly developing into something more, I like their scenes together, and how are they communicate and joke around. Oh, and I forgot about Chris, Gwen’s best friend and secret crush. To be honest, he wasn’t my favourite character and I am definitely Team Finn. God knows how it will end up eventually between them.
Besides my long rant about the main characters, Gwen is trying to help Finn solve the murder that happened in the town, and in doing so, she runs into things she shouldn’t. She also tries to find out the real name of the new police detective, as she think that Finn must be a short version of some other name which I thought was funny, and towards the end of the book I wasn’t sure what was more important for me – finding out who the killer or what his name was.
I felt like there was constantly something happening in this story, which was nice and kept me reading faster than I expected. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one (which I am going to do right now, I just had to write this down so I do not get it mixed up).
Marigolds, Mischief, and Murder is the beginning of a fabulous new series by Erica Wynter! The characters are very likable and the cozy mystery kept me guessing. The friendships, mystery, humor, potential romance and banter made this book hard to put down! Gwen Stevens is running her family's flower shop, Camelot Flowers while her parents are in FL. She grew up in Star Junction and knows everyone and she is well liked. Gwen's best feiends are Penny and Chris but Gwen has an unrequited crush on Chris. Penny is trying to get her to move on so when handsome Detective Finn Butler arrives in town Gwen and Finn are paired off. They hit it off and their banter is fun and one of my favorite parts of the story. Chris is renovating an old warehouse into a youth center. Gwen gets a text from him in the middle of the night and she finds a dead body at Chris' building but Chris isn't around. Detective Finn Butler shows up and Chris becomes the prime suspect. Finn just arrived in town and doesn't know anyone so he accepts Gwen's help. Gwen and Penny question some of the locals and the fact that they grew up in town and know people works great in the story. The ending was captivating but it wasn't too drawn out. This was a very enjoyable cozy mystery and I can't wait to read the next book! #MarigoldsMischiefAndMurder. #GemmaHallidayPublishing #EricaWynter
I was hoping the end wouldn't be as boring as the rest of it, but I was wrong. This book is only suitable for people who don't really read. Sorry to say, but it is full of clichés. Only clichés, to be exact. The whole story is completely devoid of interesting characters, exciting story turns, not even the environment/place is unique. What is it about? We have a small town and a florist. Nosy, of course. The first character becomes the major suspect, the second the dead body, the third the... ehm, let's try it spolier free. There is a chain of characters introduced in quick succession, mostly men. Almost everyone is the same age, and their names are average. Derek, Mitch, Penny, Chris... thankfully the heroine and hero have normal names, Gwen and Finn. The inspector is of course hot (standard hot, albeit with beard). The murdered guy is so uninteresting I can't find words. A drug dealer. (What's new?) Guess what the murder reason is... Yep, that's it. The romance could've saved it, if it wasn't so average too. Why couldn't for example Finn get Gwen a special kind of compost to show his care? Why did he have to come running when her window was broken? Please! Sorry I am so negative, but please don't write a book until the genuine ideas come to you! It is worth the wait, believe me!
I waffled a lot when trying to decide whether to give this book three stars or four. I liked most of the characters, but the MC sometimes acted like a teenager rather than someone who is "a few months away from turning 30." A definite love triangle is here, another knock against the four-star rating.
The saving grace is that the mystery itself was good. Although the victim was supposedly good friends with several characters, there were a lot of names - including those friends! - on my suspect list. As the investigation continued, most of those names were crossed off, and I had the entirely wrong name at the top. I was astounded that Gwen had an absolute TSTL moment just before the reveal, and almost as surprised at who the culprit was.
Although Goodreads doesn't have these books linked to the series, this is the first book of a three-book series. I will probably eventually read the next one, if only to find out if/how the blasted love triangle is resolved. I know which 'team' I'm on, but who knows what Gwen will do?
This is the first book I have read by Erica Wynters. Gwen’s BFF and crush is on the prime suspect for murder of his friend Justin. Chris states he didn’t do it and Gwen believes him even though the evidence points to him.
Detective Finn Butler is the new detective to town. Prior job was with Chicago PD. There are some threads of romance but mostly the murder. If Chris didn’t do it, who did. Chris has never acknowledge an attraction to Gwen but he does depend on her a lot as a friend. Can Gwen and Finn find the killer and is it Chris, if not, whom is it?
I liked the mystery and the red herrings. I liked the relationships between what will be the core characters in this series.
I am definitely looking forward to the next in this series. I was given an advanced readers copy. These are my own opinions.
I was given advanced readers copy and am not required to leave a positive review.
Another great series from Gemma Halliday Publishing. Gwen Stevens loves the small town where she grew up. She also loves the family flower shop and wants to prove to her parents that she can handle running it. Murder gets in the way. The whole town believes Chris Crawford, Gwen's crush from high school, committed the murder. Gwen sets out to solve it and help Chris. The mystery is suspenseful, the pacing is quick. Lots of interesting small-town characters. I liked Gwen's single-minded determination to help her best friend, a guy whose love she has always sought. Great setting. Who doesn't love flower shops? When Gwen is attracted to the new detective Finn Butler, she feels it's a betrayal of Chris, but she can't fight the attraction. Lots of danger at the end, but she solves the murder. Looking forward to the other books in the series, and to especially find out who Gwen chooses, Chris or Finn. I'm on Team Finn.
Gwen and Penny are best friends in the small town of Star Junction, and while Penny is married, she is always trying to find family match for her friend. Meanwhile, Gwen has has a forever crush on her longtime friend of 18 years, Chris, which Penny is determined to stop. After a day of helping Chris at his soon to be youth center, everyone meets at Becky’s bar, where Justin shows up yelling at Chris. But when Gwen finds Justin dead with one of Chris’s screwdrivers in his chest, things look dire. The newly hired Detective Finn Butler, from Chicago, is on the case , and as he and Gwen become friendly, she tries to help him figure out the small town details. The problem with this case is that there are too many suspects! A fun book to read, and free right now!
I'm looking forward to Erica's next book in this series! She inhabits her books with well thought out and real characters that you can relate to. Then puts them in sticky situations and let's the hold your breath hilarity ensue! Erica let's her humor, love of romance, and thrill of the chase all shine through her stories; making them a fun read! I highly recommend both reading Marigolds, Mischief, and Murder and following Erica, so you never miss out on her future releases! 💗
Gwen is a small town girl and florist who gets involved in a murder case trying to defend her best friend Chris. As she learns more and more about potential suspects and more of the bad things happening in her town and about the people she thought she knew well, she gets smitten with the new detective Finn who’s on the case. This book is a great combination of rom-com and murder mystery. It’s funny, suspenseful and has some romantic parts though not at all overly cheesy. It’s well written and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
I never would have figured out the murderer. I love how courageous Gwen is and how she is determined to find out the truth for her friends. Finn is the perfect person for Gwen. I can't wait to see how their possible romance plays out. And what about Gwen's crush on Chris? This author really knows how to keep you enticed in this book and definitely throws plenty of red herrings your way. She is a new author to me but one I will definitely be enjoy reading. If you are looking for a new author, please give her and this book a try. You will be glad you did.
This is the first in the series. The main character is Gwen. Gwen works in a flower shop and has been in love with Chris for years but he hasn't seen it that way. She gets a text from Chris 2 am saying it's an emergency and to come right away. Only when she gets there is no Chris just a dead body. Now everyone in their small town is trying to figure out who did it and most think it might be Chris but not Gwen. She starts asking questions and some scary notes telling her to back off or else. Can she figure this out before it's too late ?
Marigolds, Mischief, and Murder is pure delight from start to finish! I loved the romance, and this is from someone who usually doesn't like love triangles. The mystery kept me guessing to the very end. Gwen is a fun, likable MC and I totally understood her being torn between Finn and Chris. Every character was charming or perfectly unlikable. The author painted just the right small-town atmosphere. Am I team Finn or team Chris?? I'm team can't wait for the next book!
I received a copy from the publisher. Gwen works at the family floral shop and loves it and loves their town of Star Junction. When an old high school crush is accused of murder, she sets her sites on solving the crime. To complicate things, there's a new, hunky, detective on the force. I really enjoyed the town, it's inhabitants and the mystery. Gwen is a very relatable character and someone I could see in my group of friends. Love this new series and am looking forward to the next book.
Marigolds, Mischief, and Murder is an outstanding start to new series! I love the characters, the small town, the flower shop and more. This well plotted mystery had me engaged from page one. The only thing I knew for sure was that Chris was innocent - but he certainly looked guilty. I had no idea who the murderer would be. I could not put the book down. I, too, am Team Finn! I am looking forward to the next book.
This was a fun read. I really like Gwen and her friends. And the new detective in town is really nice. But Gwen has known her best friend Chris almost all her life. So which one will grab her heart? That’s the romance part of this cozy - but the mystery - like Gwen and Finn (the det), you’ll keep guessing right up to the end. Nicely done.
Such a fun read! I grew up in a small town and could relate so well to the setting of this story. The nosy neighbors, rumors spreading thru town, everyone knows everyone, and the drama around the pie social. Loved the love triangle and the “who done it” mystery. Great book - can’t wait to see what happens next!
The perfect small town mystery and romance that will definitely make you pick a side.
The perfect game of who done it and I had no idea who the murderer was. This book kept me guessing and so far definitely Team Finn! I am excited to see what Erica has in store for Team Chris and what crazy adventure Gwen will go on next. Bring on book 2!
I received this book as a prize in a giveaway and it was delightful! The characters are great and easy to root for. The setting is a charming and gossipy small town; everyone knows everyone! I loved the witty banter dialogue and how the mystery came together at the end. Definitely Team Finn! I’m looking forward to reading book 2!
This was so good. I love the storyline and the characters. I completely thought the kilker was someone else. I honestly didn't see it coming. I can't wait to see what comes next in book two.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Fun first book in the Camelot Flowers Series. I enjoyed the character development, the intriguing end, and Finn and Gwen’s possible blooming romance amid a murder investigation. Looking forward to the next installment.
Enjoyed the cozy. Liked the characters. Good mystery without being an over-the-top screwball story. Even though, I identified the murdered early on, I didn’t know why. Hopefully, Gwen quickly moves on from her Chris teenage crush. Will continue to the second book of the series.
Gwen is s florist who is thrust into a murder when finds a body and he crush becomes a suspect. I really want to like Gwen but find some one her activities irrational and foolish. The writing is superb and I hope becomes a worthwhile heroine.
A fun, fast read. The author must have a great imagination because she sure gave lots of personalities to her characters. I couldn't put this well written book down and look forward to the next book.
