Feeling nostalgic for the simplicity of the 90's? Flamingo has you covered as you embark on a suspenseful/sci-fi trip back to the year 1995!
In 1985, a meteorite crash lands near a small fishing town in Rockport, Massachusetts. A fisherman takes the strange rock home with him, but it's quickly confiscated by a group of ominous individuals. Ten years later, a seemingly impossible event with Ben and Sara Whitmore's five-year-old daughter, Mia, leads to their lives being changed forever. The truth about Mia grows harder and harder to keep secret and they reach out to a doctor they were referred to, Dr. Brinkman, who has a secret of his own. Things only escalate from there. Ben and Sara will do anything it takes to help their daughter, and their journey has them reminiscing ten years prior, where Ben's actions in college kickstarted everything...
I really loved this book! The story was very gripping and tense. I really enjoyed Ben and Mia's relationship throughout. As for the setting, I felt like I went back in time to the 90's with all the fun little nods to that era! The pacing was excellent, I really couldn't put the book down, and I'm ready for a sequel.
As other reviewers have stated, the editing and pacing in some areas could use a lookover, however due to the engaging story, fun 90's nostalgia, hilarious comedy, and loveable characters, this book is still easily a 5/5 even with those issues. A much recommended book perfect for the Summer.
Overall, there was so much going on, I had a hard time relating to all the characters equally. I really liked Ben, and the way he fought to overcome his struggles. While I liked the ending, I didn’t feel like it was a fitting ending for the book, hence the four stars.
I absolutely loved reading David James' novel, Flamingo. The book takes readers on an exciting journey through the 90s, blending suspense, sci-fi, and humor seamlessly. The story follows parents navigating their daughter's extraordinary, supernatural ability, a mystery that keeps you hooked. The book skillfully crafts suspenseful twists that leave you eager for more while infusing heartwarming moments to forge a real connection with the characters. The characters are relatable and endearing, especially the young Mia with her enigmatic powers. The pacing is well-managed, transitioning smoothly between the parents' journey and Mia's experiences, deepening the intrigue. Flamingo captures the 90s nostalgia beautifully and offers an intense, emotionally rich narrative that explores family dynamics and extraordinary abilities.
I particularly enjoyed the themes and the trip down memory lane with the 90s references. It was a fantastic read that really had me on the edge of my seat with a thrilling and unpredictable plot. The strength and resilience of the characters as they grapple with unique challenges was inspiring and thought-provoking.
I highly recommend Flamingo by David James to anyone looking for a gripping narrative with a touch of the supernatural. It's a captivating literary journey that will leave you captivated until the very end.
This sci-fi story is about Ben, his wife Sara, and five-year-old daughter Mia—who can throw the mother of all tantrums. The story had an X-men "mutant" vibe with secret-lab flamingo experiments gone wrong in the manner of a superhero origin story. It felt like it was going for a nostalgic "Stranger Things" sci-fi vibe with the over-the-top references, football scores and other things that had nothing to do with the story beyond adding scenery/setting.
The story was actually interesting and kept me engaged, and I'm sorry I can't give it five stars, but the editing was non-existent. Aside from little proofing and copy-editing things, there was no sense of how to use whitespace properly, which made it difficult to read.
I don't often find myself engaging in the story, so this book has that, but it needs professional editing help.
This was such a fun trip back to the good old days of the 90's! I felt like there was a wonderful balance of subtle nods to nostalgia but not overbearing, intertwined with the gripping and intense scenes, which made me want to continue reading to find out what happened next. I thought the author did a fantastic job of hopping back and forth between the past and present. One chapter in particular was my favorite when we visit Ben and Charlie as college students in 1985.
As much as this was a serious thriller with hints of sci-fi, I found the humor weaved throughout to be a sometimes much needed tension breaker. Stranger Things came to mind almost immediately as I read along.
Overall, for a debut novel, this was a homerun and I cannot wait to see what happens next in the inevitable sequel!
Flamingo by David James is a science fiction thriller that begins with a lone fisherman finding a meteorite in Rockport, Mass. (which is ironic since one recently landed in Maine The story is rather fast-paced and intriguing. However, I felt the writing needed improvement, which caused me to give this book a three-star rating. Interspersed between the action packed scenes, were rather slow, unrelated to the story paragraphs that slowed down my interest, yet I still was held to the story. Other readers may not have an issue with the writing style as I had and still enjoy the drama created around this profoundly gifted little girl. The author has created a captivating story regardless, and I found myself intrigued throughout.
Was it science fiction? Was it 90's nostalgia? Was it a buddies book? Was it a child in danger book? No way to tell. It jumped from one theme to another. The only consistency was the use of "smirk, smirked, smirking". 16 times did the characters " smirk".
