"She Produces For Her Husband What His Money Fails to Produce." (Mike Murdock, The Proverbs 31 Woman)

This book is based upon Proverbs 31:10-31. It reads,

"An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
“Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates"

There is so much counsel in this passage for women, but it also for men who seeking to identify a Proverbs 31 Woman. The Author says that this type of woman requires to be pursued. It it unlikely that this kind of woman would pursue the man. He says, "The prostitute pursues. The Proverbs 31 Woman requires pursuit. The whorish woman stalks a man like a predator. She thrusts herself into his face. She pounds his door. She is telephoning men through the night. She is unavoidable. The Proverbs 31 Woman is different. She is aware of her difference..."

The Author begins his book by saying that this may be a controversial topic during these days of gender-being and opinions. However, his revelations were so strong that they compelled him to write this book - "carefully, cautiously and sometimes dangerously" he writes.

So what exactly is a Proverbs 31 Woman. The Author has 31 chapters that dissect this Proverb, as well as add his own insights into these verses. Some of the chapters expounded upon are:

1. She is rare.

2. It is rare man who is capable of discerning her.

3. She requires pursuit.

4. Money and possessions are not enough to attract her.

5. She produces for her husband what his money fails to produce.

6. She can be trusted.

7. She will do him good.

8. She does not have a dangerous side to her.

9. She loves to work...

29. Her children enjoy her.

30. Her husband praises her.

31. She fears the Lord.

I think my favourite chapter was Chapter 12: She Is An Early Riser. Not because I think a woman always has to get up early!, but because I agree that every person should value time, including men. And the Proverbs 31 woman values time and does not waste it. The Author says, "The Proverbs 31 Woman values her time. The average woman does not carry a Time-Management Notebook. She has lipstick, powder, mirror, nail polish...not a Day Planner!" He talks about how people lose hundreds of hours in watching soap operas, talking to friends on the phone or just sitting around the house. And that what is required is to be like the Proverbs 31 Woman who had a sense of purpose and focused on her Assignment. A part of that Assignment is taking care of herself and her family.

Of course, I felt it odd that a man should write a book about how a woman should behave, and I felt it even odder that I should read it, as I am not really the intended audience. However, God did give us His Word, and there are clear instructions on how a woman and man should behave toward each other and their respective families.

The Proverbs 31 Woman is a happy woman, her husband and children praise her and bless her. She works, she is business savy...she protects her husband's focus and he rewards her with love and security. What woman and man wouldn't want this type of relationship? So, I think the Proverbs 31 Woman is still valid for our day and time, and is a good example of what a woman can imitate...and the rewards that will follow her.

The chapters are 1-2 pages that begin with a verse, some of which repeat from the previous chapter. It is not what I expected. I used to read Murdock's daily e-mails and they are better than this book. The chapters can seem repetitive as well as brief. I am a slow reader, but tend to remember what I have read fairly easily. I read this book in 2 segments. The first one caused me to fall asleep and I ended up re-reading part of it the second time because I did not remember reading it.

A good book about the woman Solomon describes in Proverbs 31. Murdock gives a verse by verse exposition of what it means to be a proverbs 31 woman.

Such a quick book on Proverbs 31 woman. Glad I read this so I can pray more effectively how to be a Proverbs 31 woman. Some of my favorite quotes:

“Every man longs for a Proverbs 31 Woman.”

“The Proverbs 31 woman requires pursuit.”

“Boaz had to return for Ruth. David had to send for Abigail. The king had to choose Esther.”

“She is financially competent herself. She is comfortable with money. She is confident without money. She understands business. Money and possessions are not enough to attract her.”

“Ruth was comfortable in the fields of Boaz… She understood his business before she understood him.”

“She prepares for new seasons. She thinks ahead… She sees problems before they arrive. She lives prepared… She anticipates changes.”

I am unable to decide what to think about this book. The intention is good but honestly the execution should have been much better. There was a lot of "she is this, she is that" without really explaining the "how-to's"

Started off fine then it got real misogynistic in my opinion. Don't care enough to recap it.
