Calvin Rutstrum (1895-1982) was one of the best-known outdoorsmen of his generation and the author of many books, including The Wilderness Route Finder, Paradise Below Zero, Once Upon a Wilderness, The New Way of the Wilderness, and North American Canoe Country, all published by the University of Minnesota Press.
He truly loves nature but comes off sounding like a smug ass-hole to all of us regular folk who are so cruel as to "sinfully" live in homes with electric lights. Also, as he so kindly explains, women CAN leave their sphere of domesticity for the wilderness, but NO, they are not capable of wielding an ax under any circumstances.
I read this some time ago (yes Andy I still have it, sorry I'll return it if we ever see each other again...). It's an interesting overview of wilderness living. The author giving his own experinces and applying what he's learned to lessons for everyone.
