At the end of World War II, Axel Mader and Jorn Furman -- two young officers who wear Germany's highest class of Iron Cross -- barely escape the retribution of the SS. Decades later, their fates are entangled with that of Jake Tallon, an American soldier stationed in Berlin who falls in love with Mader's daughter. Tallon, too, is a decorated war hero, though from Vietnam, not WWII. Together, the three iron men join together in Berlin just before the fall of the Wall to confront the legacy of the past . . . and defeat it.
Leonard B. Scott (Col. USA ret.) is also the author of the acclaimed novels Charlie Mike, The Last Run, The Hill, The Expendables, The Iron Men, and Forged in Honor. Scott retired in 1994 as a full colonel after a twenty-seven-year career in the United States Army, with assignments throughout the world. A veteran of Vietnam, he earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Colonel Scott devotes all his time to researching and writing his novels. He and his wife have returned to their home state of Oklahoma, bought their dream house, and declare they're never moving again.
This is one of my favorite novels. An intriguing and well written story that does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the personalities and values that go along with military leadership, regardless of the country.
Three German WWII vets, also Iron Cross winners, are reacquainted with an old Waffen SS officer and adversary. Somewhat predictable story line but enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoy the books written by Mr. Scott! His characters are lifelike and display the hood and bad qualities of mankind. This book is no exception having the backdrop of WW2 and the Cold War into a story about the friendship and camaraderie of soldiers. The story is fast paced and a one to hold your interest. I definitely recommend reading this book.
Very good book. Plots were well developed and kept my interest. I would have given it 5 stars but the exploits of the Iron Men were a little too much and unrealistic - even in fiction
There's a lot to think about in this book. Written in 1993, it is a military action adventure story with serious PTSD overtones. Thankfully we don't focus on the Vietnam Vet main character's war PTSD. While that would be an admirable subject, it would be cliche. Instead Scott chooses to focus on the PTSD and unresolved WWII issues of the man who will become the surrogate father and father in law to our main character. This was the main focus of the book for me. Of course they avenged actions taken by a crazy SS officer in the final days of WWWII on the father in law's unit, but I truly enjoyed the deeper subject material that Scott got into here.
Very interesting - told from the point of view of a US Army officer and two former Luftwaffe officers after WWII. I met the author at a bookstore and he graciously autographed my copy.
