Michael Leunig, typically referred to as Leunig (his signature on his cartoons), was an Australian cartoonist. His works include The Curly Pyjama Letters, cartoon books The Essential Leunig, The Wayward Leunig, The Stick, Goatperson, Short Notes from the Long History of Happiness and Curly Verse, and The Lot, a compilation of his "Curly World" newspaper columns. Leunig also wrote a book of prayers, When I Talk To You. He was declared an Australian Living Treasure by the National Trust of Australia in 1999.
You And Me is the thirteenth book by Australian artist and author, Michael Leunig. It is a collection of pieces that have been previously published in the Melbourne Age, and some have appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald.
It begins with Literature: The pen is mightier than the sword And mightier than the literary award. Without the pen we’d be unable To leave those notes on the kitchen table Nothing lovelier ever penned With three small crosses at the end; Made for no one else to see: The literature of you and me. Filled with Leunig’s iconic drawings, this collection is at times amusing, at times poignant, at times a little strange, often insightful and perceptive. Single page scenes without dialogue are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Highlights are The Secret of Men’s Health, Spring Song, Ode to a Jet-Ski Person, Adult Education Courses Catalogue 1993, Twenty-four Hour Shopping, How To Sleep Well, New Songs for the New Republic, Petrel Head, Christmas, and the art of dogs. It was published in 1995 so Leunig can’t have known of the Menindee Lakes fish kill or the big bushfires, and yet: Prayer For The Sardines God rest the little sardines Who died by mysterious means Protect every beautiful soul Shoal after shoal after shoal As upward to heaven they fly Through the poisonous muck in the sky.
Leunig always has a unique and wonderful eye upon this crazy beautiful world we live in. A hotch potch of happy, sad, mad, loony and calmness that I will continue to return to.
