Review from Way Too Hot Books

Mr. Gray, you got served! According to Goodreads, The Ninety Days of Genevieve was first published in... 1996. I tried to check that out, but I didn't manage to find any details about 1996. edition. If this information is not correct, please let me know. But if it is - my mind was trying to figure out how old I was back than and what I was doing. My innocent self was happily making fool of herself while dancing to Macarena, Where Do You Go and Un-Break My Heart or crying my eyes out after watching Jerry Maguire and sleeping in one bed with my four friends after Scream. And all that time I was completely unaware that out there were this whole different world of chains and whips and pain and pleasure.

A lot of hotness, sugar-kink & one romantic dominant bastard. First thing, all of you who think that this book won't be your thing because it was written that long ago (note the sarcasm), do not worry - The Ninety Days of Genevieve has ageless feel and you will barely notice age gap between you and setting of the story. Genevieve is young, attractive and successful woman who finds herself in the middle of the lion's liar - Mr. Sinclair thinks that Genevieve needs to learn the lesson. So, we have classic plot twist - sexual agreement - by now predictable turn of events in this kind of novels. But this doesn't have to be a bad thing. It surely is not here - I couldn't go to sleep until I finished reading it (my sister woke up to get ready for work and I went to sleep).

I shall do that damn striptease thing! My favorite thing about this book? Where to start? Relatable characters, absolutely captivating erotic atmosphere, great romance, amazing steamy scenes. You can even learn few things from this book - like how your sexual appeal comes from inside, from your confidence and attitude, at that moment when you finally let go and forget about your inhibitions. Or how there is no place for inhibitions between two people who are in love. Or that you should always tell him/her what you want - in the bedroom and outside of it.

Fluffy romance. Only thing that I found a little bit over the top was love story. It is this whole knight in the shiny armor throws his fairy, kinky princess on his white horse and ride into the purple and pink sunset ending. But that is why The Ninety Days of Genevieve is sugar-kink.

Who should read it? Fans of romantic stories with kinky twist, nothing too shocking or dark. Just your regular full blooded female fantasy. Imagine how On Dublin Streetby Samantha Young would look like if Braden was Dom. Dear gods of kink... I am sweating already!

Initial reaction: I actually didn't realize this novel went back as far as it did for publishing and that it's actually a re-pub, but my biggest issue was how static the characters seemed despite some purportedly steamy scenes, alongside problematic scenes that just made my skin crawl despite reading it from a distant eye. It takes on the rather familiar premise (or was this one of the titles that shaped that particular premise - it's hard to tell) of a woman who's at the beck and call of her supervisor sensually for 90 days. As to how those following days go...I think I'd best leave that for the full review (as well as my reactions because I'm still meditating on how I feel about this). Probably a 1.5 - 2 star read overall for me, though not sure if I'll keep it at that yet.

Full review:

"The Ninety Days of Genevieve" by Lucinda Carrington left me mostly with mixed emotions for a novel of its genre. I wasn't familiar with this title before I saw it listed on Harlequin's line of requests a while back, nor did I realize this was a title that was published many years ago. It might be credited with contributing to the workplace steamy alpha male boss meets submissive employee - but the overarching narrative put a cold impression on me. On one hand, it doesn't waste time in showcasing the steam factor, and I somewhat understood that Carrington was going for different fantasies and imagery in the text for erotic overt and undertones. And that's not a bad thing - different displays of imagery can be good. I remember at one point Genevieve visualizing herself as a Dominant over her boss and saying "That's progressive, at least it's recognizing a woman can not only have active fantasies about sex but also have the willingness to take the lead." Where there's a step forward in this novel however, is accompanied by moments where it takes five steps back. Way back.

This novel lacks distinct characterization and personalities. Mostly while reading this, I felt like I was just wading through erotic image after image and boundary pushing scenarios without much heart or identity for the characters within. I spare no hesitation in saying that I didn't like Genevieve - she was incredibly judgmental (especially of other women) and oddly naive (who didn't see that coming).

One example of her judging:

"It was the first time Genevieve had actually watched women bodybuilders working out. She was surprised to see that both of these women were conventionally attractive. They had strong, muscular bodies, but their faces would not have looked out of place in a cosmetic advertisement. As she watched them straining to lift weights that would have given some men problems, she wondered why they wanted their bodies to look so unfeminine."

At one point after this, a guy shames the women whom Genevieve observes by calling them "Lezzies" (supposed to be condescending towards lesbians).

Dude...as a person from an exercise science background and who has a general appreciation for the capabilities of the human body - male or female - and knowing from experience that not all people in this field do it just to "look good" for men or that exercising is "unfeminine" - this is pretty darned ignorant and perpetuating antiquated, harmful stereotypes (which this narrative does more than once in general). Don't get me started on saying why using someone's (anyone's) sexual identity as a backhanded insult is abhorrent, because I could rage for days. Ugh. It's not just the fact this was penned in the latter 1990s, it's just crummy logic and showcasing to begin with.

But then again, it has a f-f sex scene, but part of me wondered how much of that was, well, playing to fantasy. When I reached the point where Bridget (the woman Genevieve was engaging) says “Playtime’s over...let’s go and find the men," I had my answer.

I went back and forth through this novel between saying certain ideas were interesting (but not expounded upon) and others being complete turn offs. And some of these ideas aren't bad, it's just nothing was done with them and there wasn't a human or sensual connection - just jaggedly presented scenes of varying quality one after the other. The other scenes between with the problematic turns threw me out of the book for how shallow and inaccurate they were, mostly through Genevieve's pampered and overly privileged lens.

In the end, while I'm giving this 1.5 stars at the most, I can't say I would recommend "The Ninety Days of Genevieve" - too immature and lacking direction for my preference, but maybe I need to read another book by Carrington to see what more of her style is like. I don't know. We'll see.

Overall score: 1.5/5 stars.

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Harlequin Mira.

I promised not to read any more of that romance/erotica crap, but I guess I`m not that good with promises.
Saw this one at the bookstore, always been a fan of nude photography (the cover of Latvian edition), so it got me hooked, I read the cover synopsis, realized I`ve got to give this one a try. I wasn't disappointed!
If you`re reading Genevieve for hot sex - thumbs up, it`s good, open minded, almost like an imaginative soft pornography, actually, dish the soft, it is pornography, but very enjoyable.
Plot? Not so great. OK, at its worst it was still better than 50 shades. From the point of view of fetish, it gives a better perspective on things, and leaves a good aftertaste, and I`m kind of curios to find out what`s my kind of kinky... Contrary 50 shades, Ninety days for Genevieve doesn't judge or suggest any wrongness in one`s desires, its the opposite - it encourages you to experiment.
What was questionable - heroine`s moral stand. She was willing to have sex and what not with a stranger just for the sake of job. Ok, he`s sexy and cute, but still? It turned out for them alright, but imagine if the initial mutual appeal wasn't there, would she do the same thing?
Opening up and liberating your inner self I approve. Whoring for money and career, not so much.

Genevieve is a woman willing to do anything for her career. So when James Sinclair might be interested in moving his accounts to her firm, she's ready to do just about anything to get his signature on those contracts. But James isn't interested in Genevieve for her professional savy, he wants to explore her sexual nature; a side of her that he knows is there - but a side that she's yet to set free.

Ninety days of being at his beck and call, whatever he may desire from her - no questions, just obedience and she's got herself a deal.

The concept of this story was excellent, the execution of it, for me, not so much. I found that I could not connect to either of these two characters at all, there was just never anything that seemed sincere enough to latch on to. James was distant and cold at most times and although I typically fall hard for a sexy CEO that likes his sex kinky, I found his approach so cold that I just never got that weak in the knees feeling.

Genevieve was a little confusing at times. Turned on by the fantasy of it all, jealous in a blink of an eye and all too formal with him to ever give away the fact that she was feeling anything towards him.

There was plenty of sex, both in the physical pairing of these two and in her own imagination, but even that felt luke warm. A lot of anticipation and build up to the actual event, and then abrupt endings that made you wonder if you had accidentally skipped a page by accident.

I had high hopes for the story to be much more enjoyed than it was. Like I said, the concept was there - it's just that by the time I reached their final night together (which I liked) I just had not developed any type of attachment to either of the two characters. Without either of these two showing their cards at all throughout the story, connecting to them was vital.

Hmm.. this book sure is different from all those 'Fifty Shades-like' books out there. You really need to be open-minded to be able to read this book!!

Genevieve wants nothing more then James Sinclair's signature at the bottum of a contract of the firm she works for.. James on the other hand has one little favor to ask of Genevieve before he signs, he wants her for ninety days, ninety days of submitting to his every desire, every sexual fantasie, she has to agree with every thing he tells her to do! Yes she finds Mr. Sinclair sexy and loves the idea to have sex with him, but the things she agrees to do with him/for him are only to be able to get his signature after the ninety days nothing more, nothing less.. or so she tought because day after day, asignment after asignment she gets more and more true feelings for James. Towards the end of the ninety days she's afraid of leaving him, afraid of the broken heart of him moving on to another woman or is she lucky? Maybe James his feelings have changed also... (I know the answer.. if you wanna know how it ends between Genevieve and James then I suggest to read the book!)

Oh My GOD!! Save yourself ! Save the time you would spend reading on this and Save the money you would spend... I am a very open minded person Ive read nearly all the BDSM books and erotic/romance out there but this just was at the bottom of them all . Ive read even the free books and we all know the free books we can get online from amazon are usually crappy but they were better then this book. !

Let me start by saying that this book is an Erotica and a strictly 18+ read.
The story is of Genevieve, a successful advertising rep who is trying to poach James Sinclair’s empire as a client. Sinclair, who has a reputation of using people for his own benefit, puts forth a proposal for Genevieve, stating that she be his sexual submissive for a period of ninety days and in return, his firm will earn his clientele. Genevieve, a woman driven by her career, accepts the offer and thus the story ahead unfolds.
It is a great thing to note that this book has been published in the 1990s but in no way seemed outdated to me, except for a few tells such as the use of phones and other tech in the background of the story. It also appeared that a good lot of the internationally acclaimed erotica, 50 Shades of Grey, has taken some inspiration from it.
I absolutely loved Sinclair’s character; he’s dark, mysterious, authoritative and charming. I loved Genevieve’s character in the beginning too, till she started romanticising Sinclair and his actions. Speaking of this, (potential spoiler warning), the one thing I did not like about the storyline was the romance arc it ended towards. For once, I wish, an erotica would just be an erotica. And even if it moves to romance, it should feel like a natural transition. Also, for a change, I’d like to read an erotic fiction where the women is the strong point of the book.
It is a light hearted book. A lot of the “plot-points” in the book may not be acceptable to many. The text is rougher than you’d usually see in an erotic fiction.
On a personal note, I have been a fan on the 50 shades series ever since I read it, but this book was a whole other level. So if I were to compare the two, here is how it would go –
90 days of Genevieve > 50 shades of Grey; but
Christian Grey> James Sinclair.

1) James la passa a prendere in moto per sfrecciare tra le strade di Londra; solo che mentre tutti e due hanno il casco per garantire l’anonimato, lei viaggia appollaiata dietro senza slip, così che gli altri i casuali automobilisti possano contemplare l’incredibile visione (per la cronaca, i due incrociano, ovviamente, il povero padre di famiglia che sta’ rientrando a casa dal lavoro: immaginate il livello di godimento di James, che è consapevole di avergli fatto desiderare l’irraggiungibile! Che immane livello di perversione!!);

2) James la porta in un cantiere abbandonato, dove lei, sempre stesa e legata sulla solita moto, viene massaggiata/solleticata da quattro energumeni silenziosi, finché non ha quarantacinque orgasmi di fila sul sellone (ma basta un massaggio?) e chiede pietà;

A delicious story on Genevieve acting out sexual fantasies she didn't even know she had and falling in love with the hero in control in the process. The telling was breathtakingly sensual. I was kept guessing most of the time, but goodness, what a heart-pounding journey it was! The motorcycle scene was arousing in the can't-catch-your-breath type of way. I would have like to know more from James' perspective, to see his emotional ties to her, but I guess that would have taken the fun out of the guesswork. I felt all of Genevieve's excitement, jealousy, confidence, and anger. And just saying his name--James Sinclair--evoked power. Wow. It's all very subtle, but certainly no less effective than if you were reading about hot, raw sex. And while I like that too, sometimes it's the more nuanced story telling that excites me more. Great read. 4.5 stars.

I enjoyed reading this book, i liked the fact the the lead character was ambitious and willing to do anything to further her career, and if spending 90 days with a hot rich guy then so be it.
Theres alot of sex scenes in this book, but what i liked the most was the love story element of the book, as im a sucker for romance!

Un viņš vienmēr dabū tieši to, ko vēlas.

3 star ⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me overall - a fast paced, easy, naughty little read but with all the cliches you would expect in this sort of book. I enjoyed some parts of the book but thought it was unrealistic in places. I also just found it hard to believe that a woman would agree to the 90 day arrangement and do the things she did just to secure a client for her firm. It wasn’t awful but isn’t something I would rush to read again. Recommended for those who love black lace, erotic fiction similar to Fifty Shades of Grey!

Article first published as Book Review: The Ninety Days of Genevieve by Lucinda Carrington on Blogcritics.

The Ninety Days of Genevieve was first published over a decade ago, and has now been re-released with a subtle, simple new cover, which has a graphic proclaiming "If you like Fifty Shades of Grey You'll LOVE this!". I certainly don't blame anyone for jumping on the bandwagon, and I can definitely see the similarities between this book and the infamous Fifty Shades.

However, although I liked Fifty Shades (I did a piece on its many faults, too!), I didn't love The Ninety Days of Genevieve. The premise is that Genevieve Loften has a 90-day contract with businessman James Sinclair. In order for her to win his extremely sought-after custom for the advertising agency she works for, she'll do whatever he orders - in a sexual sense - for the duration of the contract. As a high-flying, determined career girl, Genevieve agrees to Sinclair's terms, thinking of the early promotion she'll get at the end of it.

However, despite the rumours about Sinclair and his interesting sexual tastes, Genevieve doesn't expect to be thrown into the kinky, exotic and sometimes risky situations that he subjects her to. She always has the option to back out -  but the huge pay-off keeps her going, as the stakes get ever higher. But as their contract draws closer to its end, Genevieve makes some discoveries about herself that will likely change her forever.

Overall, The Ninety Days of Genevieve was a tad disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the writing itself is much better than Fifty Shades, and the premise is interesting. But for some reason, I just couldn't engage with or make myself care about the characters. Throughout, the sex scenes are conducted in such a business-like manner - as per Genevieve and James' arrangement - that I just didn't find them all that hot. I feel the parts that should have been erotic lacked passion and therefore I was pretty indifferent. I saw the twist at the ending coming, but even if I hadn't, I suspect I still would have found it quite mediocre.

Despite all that, it's still worth a read for the premise and the writing, and others may engage with it as I didn't, but it won't be a keeper on my bookshelf.

Genevieve Lofton wants to sign James Sinclair with her firm, she agrees to 90 days of whatever he wants. If she doesn’t back out he will give her his signature. But she must do everything he wants … trust me everything and anything he wants.

The character of Genevieve is focused only on business. She really doesn’t have time for romance or relationships. Being top at her firm is what she is focused on. She is sexy, but never really realized it, that is until James came along and helped her find her true self. She does things she never dreamed she would. But she does these things to land James as a client, Right?

James Sinclair is a bit of a mystery at first. And at times I was unsure of his true motives. Was he really using Genevieve, just to see how far she would go for him? His character was strong, dominate and masterful.

This book has just about everything you would come to expect from an erotic novel. With sexy scenes, and light bondage, to kinky. Some were so well written and others not so much.

Spoiler Alert, for anyone who has not read the book *****

I found myself torn with this book. The basis of the story was good, but I felt it lost something along the way. Mostly in part to co-workers, acquaintances, etc. coming up to Genevieve asking throughout the book if she had heard the latest about James. No one knew that they were seeing each other. And for me the reader this was a distraction. Another part I didn’t care for, was the last gift that was delivered to her. As much forethought that went into his planning of scenes etcetera, I thought he could have done better than just sending an engagement ring with a note that said … Marry Me ?

Favorite line:
He stared at her for a moment, then grinned slowly. “I have a proposition for you,” he said. “But it might not be quite the kind of business deal you were expecting.”

3/5 stars

I received an ARC of this book from the NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fun to read when you are in the right mood and yes, far better than Fifty shades of Grey. But then, that isn't all that hard, is it? :-)

Negentig Dagen Genevieve (the Dutch edition of The ninety days of Genevieve, a Black Lace novel) doesn't judge, has no plot to speak of and no in-depth characters, but that doesn't really matter, as that's not the reason why you picked up the book in the first place, or is it? The ending is a bit sugary, compared to the rest, but who cares. As I said, the book is just good fun to read; nothing more, nothing less.

Erotica I feel should be like art, something that should seem natural and beautifully penned, so you may enjoy it!
'Ninety Days' just pushes the barrier of pleasure and borders weird and disgusting acts of sexual practices. I seriously don't see how one can be in love with a woman and be okay with her getting physically intimate with other men or in front of them!
But then, i'm a conservationist! My idea of romance, sensuality or even wild sexual behaviour is not anywhere on the lines of this book!
If you enjoy reading totally crazy kinky stuff, this may excite you to some extent (yes, excite in all senses)! Otherwise, the book is hardly an average read!

This book was just sooo bad, i can't even tell.
I mean I love the genre of more erotic novels but this
one wasn't really...romantic.
Basically It's about this rich guy James Sinclair who
gives Genevieve a contract to be his
for ninety days. Sexy right? You would think so!

He isn't nice to her in any way, calls her a whore
all the time... talk about a turn off, the book is just
so vulgar...

I get that erotic novels are popular now with
fifty shades (which i loved!!!) and all that but please...
Keep it at a certain level!

šo grāmatu izvēlējos, jo man ieteica draudzene, sakot, ka tā ir līdzīga "Fifty Shades of Grey".
