Toads are masters of self-defense. When they face predators, they have several survival strategies. They can ooze poison, puff up their bodies, or play dead! This book introduces young readers to toadscreatures with warty skin, long, sticky tongues, and a unique life cycle.
The real life pictures in this story are great for seeing a toad up close and personal, without them jumping at you. This book tells about what frogs eat, their lifecycle, and how frogs defend themselves when attacked by a predator. The book also has different species of toads so the reader can see the different sizes and colors toads can be. My 6 year old loved it and was able to read almost all of it independently. He really enjoyed it, especially where the toads play dead to trick their predators.
I think that this book and others like it in the series are great for younger school aged kids. We have used these in the first and second grade classroom to help with their "first" research book reports. There is not too much information where the child will be overwhelmed and the information isn't silly either. I think that these books are great for beginner readers. These are also AR books for anyone who might want to know. I would recommend these books to others.
