Bear cubs is a nonfiction book on the first grade level. This book talks about how bear cubs are born in the winter and blind. They do not open their eyes until they are six weeks old, and do not get their fur until two weeks old. Also, bear cub home is called a den, and their mother feeds them milk until their teeth grow in to eat other food, such as berries, honey, and fish. When danger is near, mother bear grunts to alert her bear cub and keep it safe. This is a great book to use during science when introducing students to various animals. An activity, students can use a Venn diagram to compare/contrast a human baby to a bear cub. This activity is one way students can make a meaningful connection. Lastly, this book is available on big universe, for all who has access to it!

I like that on page 9, it was looking at me, and it has white fur, and it’s cute.

I like that on page 15, a baby bear was looking at me and grabbing berries from a bush.

I like that bears climbs trees to stay safe, and I like that they grow quickly.
